Looking back at the Hawks, they've always been an exceptional kick and mark side. That's their mantra and still the best in the AFL. Boxhill Hawks have been dominating the VFL since Clarko's been coach. You've got to remember we've played 7 debutants this year, the Hawks played their first tonight. Like I said, don't be fooled at what the Hawks fielded tonight. Expectations heightened when we won 6 out of 7 games before the bye. The reality is we're still a bottom 4 side but the plus side is our young blokes are chalking invaluable game time.

Just Morgan's alter ego for times when he's drunk or not feeling motivated enough to be eloquent.

It's disappointing the last 2 weeks but I thought we turned a corner albeit slightly after the bye. I look at Blakely and see the improvement in him. Weller and Langdon ( injured) have impacted at times. They're 3 blokes that have played less than 80 games collectively. This year's crop of Darcy, Cox, Nyhuis, Ryan, De Luca, and Hughes and Tucker, have had a baptism of fire. Tell me a club who's had a massive personnel change and I'll tell you how they've fared. We've made a GF once in 21 years. A club who's been kicked from pillar to post with little or no hand outs. I'm not sure how a new coach will help. None of the others took us to 4 consecutive finals series and I doubt if a new coach can.

Jezza I agree with a lot of what you say and I admire your unending optimism.

Can I ask you one question though. How do you think these exact bunch of young Freo players would have gone tonight if Clarkson had been coaching them for two years and if the Hawks youngsters and elders had been coached by the Freo coaches for the last two years??

Its a sincere question, do you think there would have been any difference?

I'd like to see Langdon and Gray back in the side when they're available.
I really think Ballantyne needs a spell at Peel.

Not sure Ballas needs a spell so much as he needs a run. Hes majorly short of a gallop, missed so much footy this year.

He might be better off doing that at Peel, where he can get some touch back without AFL level pressure running interference. Probably won't happen with Walters injury.

We were a year younger on average than the Hawks, which is quite a big difference in AFL terms. But the biggest gulf was in the ruck, particularly when you fluff your chances repeatedly. It's the purest one on one contest in a game of footy, with the wilyness and endurance of experience able to be used to full effect across a game.

Darcy did beat McEvoy last night, only to watch the ball go back over his head after we took it out of the clearance. McEvoy received a couple of very dubious frees in the ruck contests, so I would not say he beat Darcy there either.

Darcy was more willing and in a year or two won't see McEvoy fit to tie his bootlaces, but last night McEvoy was more effective.

Rhufus, there will be a time when my optimism will waned. To answer your question, Clarko would not have made a difference had he taken charge of our team last year. When he got appointed at the Hawks in 2004-05, that draft saw Franklin, Roughead with Hodge and Mitchell already bedded down. They were a bottom four side until they won the cup in 2008. They had a flat spot in 09, before consistently making finals which culminated in their 3 peat. In comparison, before 2012, we've made 2 finals maybe 3. We peaked without winning with a list not many coaches could have done much more. Last year we got Logue at pick 7, Darcy at 34. Both showing their talent. We are 12-18 months into a rebuild. There's no magic wand. It's growth and development and that goes to our coaching staff who last year had at least 5 new faces on the books. It's a collective build not just coaching structures. We don't have a Franklin, Kennedy, Dixon or Lynch. We will in Cammac and Kersten who are still babes in the woods. Don't be disillusioned.
