TOPIC: Spring Cleaning the restumping

So, I've been reflecting on all the noise we make about our team.

From what I gather from you mob, if we were to properly get a stumpy happening, we should be putting the broom through the house and that would mean a proper clean out like a real dose of salts.
So that would look like the following players looking for a new roost post MMXVII (2017) if I am hearing you all right:
i Ballantyne
ii Dawson
iii Ibbotson
iv D Pearce
v Suban
vi Sheridan
vii Griffin
viii Crozier
ix Taberner
x Clarke
xi Sutcliffe
xii Spurr
xiii Apeness
xiv Johnson
xv Collins

Seems to be a pretty simple 15 player hole to fill? So why do we not do it and move on with a refill?

Given we have 1 pick in first round, and nothing till the 40's who has currency for trade and how do we do it? There is 3 Rookies at present do we keep them?

I look forward to the highly informed commentary and appropriate use of Roman numerals which I thoroughly enjoyed as a cathartic experience

Thats pretty much the list I reckon R1B1, ....what are the contractual obligations on all of those.? Ie who do we have to keep (ie DPearce ) vs who we don't ( ie Clarke and Ballas). Will try and look it up....

Yep, we can...Mcarthy started all that.....and I don't like the concept one little bit ! Works both ways and one day it will seriously burn us.
Why its important is that it defines who we are able to delist. (That's my understanding of things anyway...will probably be proven wrong) For instance, we can''t just delist D. Pearce, because last year we signed him up till 2018. We can trade D. Pearce, but given that's unlikely, he's taking up room on the list next year...
I'll probably discover T. Fist is signed up to 2029 or something....

Heres the problem though R1B1.
Due to injuries to the Ubermeister, Apeness and Alex Pearce we are not really sure what weve got there.
Also we still dont have final jurors decisions on Collins and Tabs.
Lastly Sandi and Johnno are one more hammy or turf toe away from retirement.

As we dont know what weve got, and some of our elder statesmen are week to week propositions, we have to keep some of that list for back up.

For example lets take the rucks. I mean lets say you axe Griff, its not far fetched to imagine Hendrix stepping on something and doing a knee during preseason and Sandi pinging a quad in round 2 and youve then got the young fella having to survive a full year, probably without Johnson to back him up either.

I think your point is right about we dont have that many draft picks this year and so a complete clean out this year actually wont be possible or desirable even. Im thinking it will be more than normal but not as large as last years bumper cull.

What it does say though is we must should get another look at Tabs and Collins. They`re both in good form so lets have another look. I cant see why we wouldnt be giving them a go unless they are already locked in place and going nowhere and Roly is backing them in to come in next year. I will be absolutely shocked if they are delisted without another go.

There is a list of the current contractual situation of players on Footywire :

www.footywire.com/afl/footy/to-fremantle-dockers

I can only assume it is pretty much correct ..(obviously they haven't yet adjusted Fyfes situation.)

Unless we can trade them Sutcliffe, D Pearce and Apeness are hanging around again next year. Spurrey is also contracted to 18, but I'm not suggesting he should be moved on yet. Mind you..he might struggle to get another contract.

The rest of the list, however, is sensibly contracted IMHO. Most of the "question marks" are done and dusted at the end of the year. So, there's a fair bit of potential to move some of them on.

The real question is, with what and how can we replace them ?? On June 7th, the AFL did an indicative draft order (after rd11)

www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-07/afl-indic...raft-order-june-2017

Take it with a pinch of salt, but unless we nail some good old fashioned horse trading with blokes like Crozier (as an example) there is not a lot coming in.... Giving up the 2nd round pick is gonna hurt.

I'd suggest a few of them like Suban, Ibbo and Griffen, Sheriden and Collins will be staying...

I take your point there Rhufus, but I was reflecting that maybe we just bite the bullet and clean out the house properly for once. There is no point just hanging onto players who are no good. Not if we want to develop a team who play together regularly. .

As much as I love his attack on the ball Apeness just keeps breaking, Clarke is totally buggered, Griffin is happy Peeling away but isn't interested in flying interstate. Lets just move them on and pick up someone who may offer something via trade. I recon we would get currency for Tabs, Collins Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Crozier, Suban and Even Ibbo.

This might explain why I am not an AFL Coach, but lets keep Sandi and Darcy and pinch hit with Cox if we get in trouble. If they all go down, well improvise. Lets just place an extra midfielder in and win the tap receive and pretend to ruck.

Having said all of this, some of these guys in the List above, I have a soft spot for and would be sad to lose eg Tabs and I think Crozier in the right spot will go great. But there are enough people here who recon they are no good. So my thought process is these are the ones the majority want out, we should do it and then recruit smartly some players with potential. Maybe raid the local league for some big forwards, a couple of big backs and some more dog hungry kids wanting to take up arms with Grey and Co and go to war and get leather poisoning.

Nah, we've already proved you don't need top 10 picks to get good footy players, if you are after athletes tho'.........

You've got to give something to get something and I don't see how those names mentioned are going to get you much in return.

They're all either over the hill or struggling to get a game with us so why would anyone else want them? Unless it was very late pick.

Let's face it, we got nothing for Barlow, De Boer or Mzungu so...

So we get rid of them CA anyway, and go get some footy players from the local teams.

I dont agree fully with the initial 15 I think it more like 10. What worries me with that list of 15 is very few with the exception of Taberner have any trade value.

For the record I am keeping Suban, Crozier and Sutcliffe who is a born tagger. And Ballantyne and Johnson get to go around again.

Its a three year solution.

It makes for interesting musing hey Hypen. The list was more reflecting what players we hear the most noise about, are well past best, are flogs, need to be gawn etc. This list of 15 are holding out other potential talent that could be having time spent developing and playing together. Sutcliffe is an interesting example, I often wondered if we took Mundy out could we replace him with Blakely or Sutcliffe. But Does Sutcliffe have the skills to hurt another side ( cue everyone piping up that he hurts us with his poor skills). He seems to polarise peoples opinions. I think he probably goes good as a midfielder and needs to be played as one. But we have better midfielders, so he will never be properly used aka Barlow style. So my thoughts are why not swap him for something that we could use while we can?.

What is the maximum number of players that can be drafted in one season? There is the national preseason and rookie drafts......plus free agency prospects.

But would it even be possible to dump 10 players in one season and actually replace them? I wonder what the biggest cull a club has had?

As disappointing as Crozier has been he is still only 23 with plenty of time yet to become a very good player. He would have trade currency, unlike nearly all the others listed above, but is worth persisting with.
