TOPIC: Umpiring

Don't know what the record number of frees in a match is, but I reckon the Bullies v Toilet should be right up there.
I am predicting some stunning umpiring today, some innovative interpretations, a plethora of brilliantly dubious decisions and an umpirical spectacle for the ages.
Occasionally, just occasionally the AFL sets up these maggot appreciation matches for our viewing pleasure.
Very, very excited to potentially see 70 frees in a match for the first time. It will be stop start from woe to go. Hold on tight, it'll be amazing.

What's really surprising that the same team of 3 - Rosebury, Stephens & Mitchell - also umpired last weeks Weagles home game.
I would have expected umpires to rotate evenly among all 18 teams during the season, for obvious reasons. Anyone know why this doesn't happen?

And watching last nights game its easy to see why Sydney are winning now. They are given forever to dispose of the ball, and even then the umpires aren't too fussy about how they do it. I imagine there were some stern words to the umpires a few weeks back about "letting Sydney play their natural brand of footy".

Also from last night, a truly perplexing decision on shepherding in a marking contest. A Melbourne player in position to mark, a Swan behind him. And the demon is pinged for shepherding. Wasn't he just holding his ground in a marking contest? I might not mind, except that dozens of times in any footy game people do this when their own player is in front and get away with it - even though they have not the slightest intent to mark the ball.

I'm not as emotionally involved in footy as I was a few years back so I find myself in the role of interested observer more often than not. Bearing in mind that tv can't offer the same on the spot perspective that the umpires enjoy and that sometimes you can't see the detail of the action it still strikes me that there is only one way to explain what goes on out there sometimes.

Shane would probably get in trouble if I used the word here. The AFL does a nice line in shutting down dissent.

Can we bring our own umpires with us when we play away?

Oh, that's right.

52 frees across two games - extraordinary.

Even Gerard Whateley in his commentary stated " 2 free kicks in a row get the Eagles at kick at a goal"

I knew there had to be a reason why the magnificent Tom missed his shot on goal.

I guess the AwFL will have to award him the goal now and gift Geelong the game.

Just want to say - the Margetts reversal of Ballantyne's 50 metre penalty at the 18 minute mark of the 2nd quarter, because St Kilda players ignored instructions and kept scragging and punching blokes in purple, was as blatant a piece of biased, anti-Freo behaviour as I've ever seen from this bloke. Utterly disgraceful. And he seemed to enjoy the moment far too much. He should NEVER umpire an AFL match again.

I was in the other side of the ground, so please someone, enlighten me - exactly what was the ONE thing out of that to reverse it?

Margetts. He really wanted to.

It was nothing.

What it was, was the umpires regaining control of the game. The only the way they can do that is to award a free and have all the players scurry away into offensive or defensive positions. The melee was continuing. We had the free. Margetts wanted control so we lost the free kick.

So if your opponent has a free kick in front of goal start a fight and keep fighting till its reversal.
