TOPIC: Darcy

Sean Darcy will be playing along Sandi. He'll take Billy Longer to the cleaners this weekend and others in weeks to come. My query is will Sandi have an impact after a month out. I don't know if Roly wants Sandi back.

Thanks Rhufus. Effin disgrace that he didn't get the rising star nomination.

Fail to see how Darcy could offer much less than one of Kersten or McCarthy in recent weeks. I defended Kersten last week before I realised he had four touches. Selection must reflect performance

You guys aren't giving Darcy enough credit. Sandi is the most dominant tap ruckman and one of the most influential players in my lifetime. If a rookie cracked the sads because he has to make way for an absolute champ of the game, then that's not the sort of character we want around the club.

Darcy, on the other hand, seems like a pretty sensible fellow. I'm sure he'll feel pretty good about his game, and once he catches his breath (probably by about Friday) he'll get stuck into some poor sap in the WAFL this week.

There's no harm in bringing an 18 year old ruckman through slowly. On the other hand, tall blokes on a footy field are prone to injury.

As to playing both, I don't think I've ever seen two ruckmen work for Freo, including when both Sandi and Griff were in their prime.

I don't reckon Hodor's 'prone to injury' Morgan - more like 'prone to injure' some poor sap that gets in his way.

Oh yeah, he's way more likely to injure some poor sap. Sandi is probably too good a bloke to really throw his weight around (he could legitimately do serious damage if he was that way inclined). I reckon Darcy will be more in the Mumford mould.

But I'm worried about Darcy's knees and feet. Carrying around 120kg isn't good for anyone's joints, let alone on a bloke still growing into his body.

Maybe the way forward is to play Darcy only in away games for a season. Give Sandi a break from having to fold himself into crappy airline seats for hours at a time. We get to watch a super-fit, raring to go Sandi at Subiaco, and the Victorians get to watch the one-who-got-away every other weekend. Seems like a win/win situation for the Dockers.

Not a bad idea 'mus.

But surely they give Sandi a wing seat.

I don't know how to do fancy links on Dockerland, but I'm assuming everyone has seen the below 'great' article. Its made my day!

www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/fre...8f7342cbc5c50d3842c5

I wouldn't worry about him carrying 111kg Morgan, ...hes been doing it for a while, and I have the sense he'd have a 'bull at a gate" attitude towards a niggle, a twinge or a real problem...
That's what natural footballers do - they just get on with it! Hase did it, Fyfe does it....Hodor will do it!!. Theres no 'Mamby Pamby" (if thats the phrase??) about him.
The more he's in the team, the better our culture is gonna be...

p.s. Sorry Jezza for re-posting the link ...you did it first....I tried to get into it earlier this morning but it wouldn't let me in...wanted me to sign up etc. Don't know if others had the same problem. Great article!!

These quotes from the article make up for that;

“He would have lost about 15kg before he got to the combine and draft. It was no dessert, plenty of vegies, plenty of salad and a source of protein.
“He just worked as hard as he could and has been very disciplined along the way.”

Turner said he urged clubs to look past Darcy’s shortcomings and consider his potential.
“The big knock on him was his weight. As a boarder at Xavier they eat what is put in front of them on the plate, but he was such an intelligent kid that if he got to a club he would work very hard to get himself fit.

“And he would take on board whatever an AFL club told him.
“But some clubs looked at him and said he wasn’t disciplined enough.
“Some clubs liked him and some clubs wouldn’t have taken him at all.
“So he went to Fremantle and they put him in with Aaron Sandilands for the first month and he just lived and breathed everything he did.
“He has replaced a lot of fat with muscle but the most important thing is his skin folds are under 60 now and he looks really fit.”

Although I must add at times, reading the article, it seemed like it was written by the Hack and Slappo in combination.

I'm sure he is tough, but in an evolutionary sense the bones in the foot are not. Sandi has to play in basketball shoes and we had to buy him some zero-gravity running machine try to keep him fit. Also, we took Sandi as a rookie when he was slightly older, and he still didn't hit his straps until his mid-20s.

Maybe he can get Hodor's body and fitness right while simultaneously playing against the biggest men in the AFL. I just don't think he needs to play every game to develop.
