Last year, the stadium project people updated us on the travel plan for people coming from south of the river (who would normally catch the direct train to West Leederville on the Mandurah line) is this: catch the train to Elizabeth Quay, alight and catch a shuttle bus to the bridge. Walk across said bridge to the new stadium. Coming home, walk across bridge, catch shuttle bus to EQ to catch the southbound Mandurah line.

Any travel plan that includes the words 'shuttle bus' is seriously flawed. I can imagine it: Game finishes, walk across bridge, get on shuttle bus. Bus will not leave until we are packed like sardines; bus travels to EQ via city traffic or what's left of Riverside drive. Bus will probably stop at the busport; walk to EQ train station to catch the southbound Mandurah line.

What other alternatives are there to get to the bridge?

I'm no rail infrastructure expert, but if a special footy train can be diverted from the Mandurah line to the Freo line to get to Subi, couldn't it also be diverted to the Armadale line to get to Burswood?

It seems a better approach than forcing people through the city.

Is there something really obvious I'm missing about train connections?

In my view, an even bigger problem is that the footbridge was designed by muppets and it's a bridge to nowhere.
Isn't it odd that it sets down at the junction of Nelson Avenue and Nile Street, on the riverside corner of Gloucester Park? This isn't convenient for anyone, except maybe regular visitors to East Perth Cemetery.
True, Google says that it's only a 600m walk, through backstreets, from The Royal on Claisebrook, or just about a kilometre if you take the more pleasant riverside walk through Victoria Gardens, but where's the thinking or planning for match day car parking in East Perth? There's never going to be enough, and even though consultants have decided that we all will, a full house of 60,000 are not all going to catch trains or shuttle buses home.
It won't take long for "No Parking" signs to go up all around Claisebrook and East Perth on match days.

Presumably there will be a fleet of horses waiting harnessed up at Gloucester Park to trundle fans to their preferred train station.

Short answer: Lisa Scaffidi lives in East Perth and backed a community group who pushed it away from Claisebrook.

For those who naively thought we'd escape the NIMBYism of Subi, behold the bridge to nowhere.

That's stupid. All it would have taken was a couple of tickets to Bora Bora* to get that sorted out.

* because they have some beautiful bridges there and anyone who visited would change their mind based the evidence presented to them.

Get your money on Shane, and forget the JFS, what you need to be winning is a boat with 40 odd thousand seats, to run from the Raffles to the toxic dump. And don't forget to include the ejector seats for the 3/4 time brigade.

Morgan, I think the issue with trains is that they've already realised that given the location of the new stadium, it's impossible to move more than, say, 38K people to and from the stadium via trains. They need a range of people catching public transport, hence, the whole walk-across-the-bridge-thing to simulate an experience of walking to the stadium as if we were walking to the MCG. Except that it sounds like a huge hassle. Subi oval doesn't have this problem because it doesn't hold anywhere near the capacity of the stadium, there are train lines servicing West Leederville, and there's a bunch of parking in Subiaco.

As for the horse pulling the tram, I've been on that tram! It's in Victor Harbour, about an hour from Adelaide, and chances are, it will get you to the stadium faster than walking through the city to the new bridge.

Who cares?
I finally have a great place to throw slime fans into the river after a derby.
If it's not finished in time, I'll revert to my original plan of stabbing weapons and rifles.
