... who would have thought that the stadium location might have some drawbacks? And even if the bridge was ready, what's going to make that option a good outcome on a rainy night.

Maybe I'm missing something, but you've got a pedestrian bridge that goes to, well, nowhere. I can't see thousands of people walking over it. If anyone thinks it will help move people out of the ground, I have a bridge for sale...

If Blind Freddy has a mate and an ACROD sticker he might be one of the few people to see the first quarter - or at least be there for it.

Clearly the contractor awarded the job have bitten off more than they could chew.........

I remember when South Australia based York civil were awarded the job I thought this would be a giant stuff up. With the elaborate design this bridge could never be built to the original budget of $50m

The job was awarded not on price but who presented the most appealing design for a price tag of $50m

Seems as though York engaged an imaginative architect and had a sales guy produce a flashy presentation to win the job. Then they actually had to go and do the hard part which is actually building the thing.

The government got the selection criteria wrong. Instead of purely making an assessment based on fancy pictures they should have considered a number of other important factors including construction methods, procurement and capability of the contractor and the associated risk to the schedule.

The contract should be torn up and given to another company.

I work in construction and reckon given the stage they are at now it will take more than 12months to complete. The easiest part of the construction is done and that has taken nearly two years already.

I don't know how far they are along with fabrication of the superstructure but I would suggest scrapping that idea and changing the design to something which would be more realistic to build in a reasonable timeframe and still look great.

I'm not saying we should just build boring structures in this city but at the end of the day the primary purpose of this bridge is to get pedestrians a relatively short distance across the river.

Why waste more time and money on this thing?

I'm not worried what it looks like, I just want to be confident it won't collapse from dodgy steel or welds.

I am worried about what it looks like and how it will function. For those architects and designers amoung us (and others interested in such things)

99percentinvisible.org/episode/in-the-same-ballpark/

Interesting take on how the local context can shape the field and contribute to a home town advantage. And why a multi purpose'toilet' bowl doesn't have the longevity of a traditional stadium.

I think we will look back on the flashy new stadium, and while it will probably work ok, we will see it as an opportunity lost. But we will have cup holders!

I'm not sure that applies to Australian where the two main sports are played on a large roundish ground. I also think modern stadium design has learnt a lot since the days of building a ground in the middle of a carpark. Hence spending so much time talking about lighting the place up in team colours and the efforts to activate the open space surrounding it.

It will be a beautiful stadium if you can actually get to it.

Not sure what we learned. We moved our inner city toilet out into a concrete car park. We had to fill in the toxic swamp first though.
