The Bulldogs haven't had a ruck man for yonks - since Minson I believe. No problem with coaching there.

The Dogs 'non-ruckman' is Tom Boyd. Ours is Griff. I know which one I'd have.

So why is our list so poor then Noddy?
Roly stated that he wasn't happy with the list when he got here. He's since had plenty of time to get that sorted but then comes out and publicly states that he has no say in who or what type of players are drafted.
Yo cant't have it both ways.

Mercury Mid year report card 6 years 10 months ago #60

Mercury
For me, the wheels fell off in mid-2015 when Richmond travelled to Subiaco Oval and on the cold, clear night they took us apart. We took out the minor premiership that year, but struggled. We lost to the good teams and just did enough to beat the weaker teams. Yes, we had injuries but something happened that fateful night. Either other teams worked out how to defeat us or we lost confidence. With the retirement of McPharlin and Johnno's injuries, our backline was greatly weakened and this just added to our woes.

We are not the same confident, skilled team we used to be. I don't think our players "believe" any more.

Agree with that last sentence Merc. It's easy to all be on the same page when success is coming your way. That's why Longmire and Clarkson have been in charge so long. Once the wheels start falling off though you get sick of hearing the same messages and mantras.

How often do you hear players say they enjoy the fresh and new ideas that a new coach brings to a club? Or in the case of ex Freo players like Menengola and Barlow who say how much they enjoy being allowed to back themselves in at their new clubs.

No coach lasts forever but unfortunately we've given ours a five year extension and claim he is the right man to rebuild a side. Not that he's had any experience doing that though.

Apparently he didn't inherit Nirvana. And yet, in two years he was coaching in a GF.

That list was just about as good as it could be at that point in time. 2012 was actually the premiership we should have won, the Hawks weren't quite ready then. That Adelaide final was the worst execution of a coaching performance in my memory. Lyon threw away a year's worth of effort in that game. Go and look at it again if you can bear it.

Belief, impact, style, skills have all fallen away since 2013. 2015 was actually the abberation solely based on the dominance of Sandilands to Fyfe in the first half of the season, and we limped home that year, and rolled over.

Roly ball and variants are unsustainable in the medium to long term. It breeds lowest common denominator participation, stifles creativity, crushes spirit. Effort-based is what he coaches because he knows it is some thing he can influence. It's the other things we need from a coach.

Obsolete and outdated by a long way , unsustainable that is why a grand final has eluded him .

Rolls got his faults but anyone who thinks getting a new coach would make a significant difference to this years ladder outcome with the list we've got is deluded.

Rolyball? Does any team not play high pressure end to end football. I think the dogs did ok last year.

Lot of people thought Malthouse was a great coach. He had the record and and runs on the board. He quickly became last year's model when things started going downhill at Carlton. Was that the list he had or his coaching style?

Seems we all have the same views , 2012 -2013 we should / could have won the big one. Why have dropped away , surely such a talented team should be still knocking on the premiership door? I too think the coach has lost the players along the way somewhere in 2015 , when maybe they realized there was no plan b , c or d when the going was tough..

Oh look. Take a team that had McPharlin, Johnno, the Fist (in reasonable form as a 3rd defender), Duffield, Mundy, Fyfe, Barlow, Hill, Sandi, Ballas, Mayne, Pav. Now get rid of Luke, Duffman, the Fist, Barlow, Sandi, Ballas, Mayne and Pav, and make Johnno and Mundy slower, give Fyfe a year off with a broken leg. Drop Ibbo. Take the most promising replacement for Luke in Alex Pearce and break his leg. Have one of your emerging forwards go off the rails.
The miracle is not that we get thrashed occasionally, but that it doesn't happen every week. We spend a lot of time looking like we don't have much structure because the backbone is gone.

I'm as keen as anyone to see us winning every week again, but when Roly said it was 4 years, he was pretty close to the money. We were a gun side in 2006. Fell apart in 2007. It wasn't until 2012 that we really started getting it together. We've got the makings of a good side. It will just take time. I hope...

How old will Fyfe, Walters and big Hill be in 4 years? Johnson, Sandilands, Mundy, will all be gone.

Looks like a lot of talent will have wasted their careers if there is actually a legit rebuild.

Yeah Drubbing. That's why De Boer went looking for a premiership
