Raglan Matt
If Suttcliffe and Sheridan go, Crozier goes back to half back, where he doesn't go missing for long spells. He does the job back there, but can't be played there if it is the only spot for the other 2. Mundy should be playing full time forward or back. Johnno is shot, his body is not holding up under pressure. Cox showed enough to say he has a future. Ryan likewise. Get Darcy into the ruck now, and bring Tabs back for backup. Get Ballas into Croziers forward spot, he will tell it like it is out on the ground. Maybe that will get Kersten and McCarthy going. For chrissake introduce Walters to the umpires so they can see he is NOT an axe murderer or cat killer.

Ross Lyon - D+

He gets the plus as he has been able to manufacture a few wins.

I have 3 issues:
i. When the mock state of origin sides were published a few weeks back, we had more players in it than any other team. You can't tell me that Fyfe, Hill x 2, Neale, Walters, Sandi & Mundy wouldn't look heaps better in any other team in the league. That is 1/3 of our team as genuine top line A graders and supposedly we are going through a restump. We should be contending, not making excuses. Rubbish.
ii. The restump or whatever we are being sold is bollocks. In 2 or 3 years when our team is at its supposed best, Sandi, Mundy, Johnno and probably a few others are gone meaning even more reliance on Fyfe, Neale and Hill. And we can see how well we play without Sandi. It is going to get worse before it gets better. As in Brisbane Lions 10+ years in the doldrums and still counting worse.
iii. I have posted on this elsewhere, but through a rebuild I want to see some semblance of a game plan. We are nowhere near looking like that at the moment.

Can someone invite the players back out to Rick Hart's farm?

Many interesting theories, but one thing is clear. We're all going to be needing a lot of full strength beer.

Harvey might have lost his job in the end, but he kept it after back-to-back 6-win seasons and games like a 117 point loss to Adelaide and loss to bottom placed Melbourne when up 50 at half time.

We don't have premiership-calibre talent. It's difficult to assess, but I reckon we have 7-12 level talent, which is probably where we'll finish up. I wouldn't give Lyon a gold star, but I wouldn't sack him either.

So he's got nothing to work with then? Does that fall back on the recruiters? The development team? The assistant coaches? The administration?
Good teams like Sydney, Hawthorn and Geelong have stayed up for years due to a combination of the above. We had our little blip on the radar, our false dawn and now we're back to what we were like for years.
And that bloody hurts. More than the old days when we knew we were crap. We just shouldn't be in this position.

The first round talent choices thru the draft from 2011 to 2014 have been absolutely shocking.
I think only Sheridan played last night at pick 16, and crozier at pick 20. I know they were compromised drafts but that bad.

RoLy's been in charge since the start of 2012. He whinged about player quality when he arrived too, as I recall.

I think it's a crutch. If it's not a deliberate ploy to direct heat away from his performance then it's a subconscious trait... or I'm just wrong. That happened once, could happen again.

I don't entirely believe it. There's always uneven quality across lists, that's natural, so we have some players better than others. Footy crowds love the escapegoat so some get more criticism than they deserve, often because it's easier to do that than look at the large, dusty grey animal in the room.

He's had time to sort it out. What we see playing in the Freo strip now is entirely RoLy's creation. I think the whole 'rebuild' is another card in the play of ensuring a sound investment for the family's future. Personally I think it's a fail and he should've been gone but they signed him to an extension and he's here to stay.

That being the case, you should watch this for no reason

I said we've got 7-12 level talent. That means you have plenty to work with, just not enough to win a premiership with (unless you jag it like the Footsdogs).

From 2010-2015 we made the finals 5 times and missed once. Good for winning games, less good for adding talent (or developing talent) to the squad.

Last I looked Sydney and Hawthorn were below us on the ladder, suffering similarly to us despite Academy benefits and being a FA 'destination club' respectively.

We whiffed on a couple of drafts, and a few players didn't come up. We're missing a bunch of mid-20s first rounders that never made it. Had first rounders Mora, Simpson, Pitt and Apeness become players, we wouldn't need to complain about pick 71 Cam Sutcliffe not improving, or Rookie-lister Tabs not making an impact.

There's plenty of blame to go around, but you can't completely disregard the system is designed to make it harder for successful teams to bring in talent.

This whole thing is not about talent, we didnt lose last night cause Sutcliffe cant kick well.

We lost because they were unprepared and disorganised and it was severe.

To be fair regarding recruiting, the AwFL skewed the draft heavily for the start ups so that made things harder for the established clubs and has to be included in any discussion of talent grabbing over the decade.

There's also the topic of RoLy as development coach to include though. There were doubts over his ability in that regard when he came across to Freo. He chews through ...

and I am saying this...

ass coaches rapidly and his game plans, while admired for their thoroughness, are criticised as intricate and hard to learn.

Freo's players appear to be not up to scratch because the team is struggling. When the team is up the players look better. A poor tradesman blames his tools. Look at Adelaide. Really look... they have a few good players but they're not a team full of stars. They're just playing really, really good footy. I reckon it's coaching.

Sydney and Hawthorn might be below us on the ladder now but I'd be more than happy to have their premierships and extended stays in the top eight than what we've had thanks very much.
And even if Sydney are below us do you really think we're a better team than them. If you were a betting man do you think the by the end of the season they'll still be below us?
I certainly wouldn't want to be playing Sydney in any hurry judging on both teams current form.

I'm really coming to think that Lyon is master of controlling perceptions (and not much else), and the FFC are quite happy to go along with the story and back it up with their internal media output. It keeps the masses quelled, and they can still crow with hope over the wins.

But for winning a few games sliding in on the seats of our arses, we'd be where we expected to be at R2. Lyon has a decent core of talent at his disposal. He seems to be wasting it.

We either play competitively or we're abysmal. If Lyon had a consistent plan of any sort, we'd consistently be one thing or another.

They didnt appear to have any energy, they did nothing to address Zorko, they didnt make changes when the clearances were 12 to 0 and the forwards clearly dont know what the others are doing.

And people want to talk about Taberner, Sutcliffe and Sheridan.

We're lacking three quality big men. A ruck to assist and takeover from 211 and someone to play with Hamling in the back and MCCarthy et al in the forward line, but we've all known this for ages. Alex Pearces injury was as blow as was Apeness and Clarke was a failed draft. From what I saw yesterday Darcy and Strads may be ok and we should get a few games into them in 2017. The big quality forward is what is missing.

The guns in the midfield lose heart when so much effort is expended for nada.

I've been a fan of Lyon for a while, the next 18 months will show whether this was misplaced.
