I didn't hear his call on Sunday, but I don't mind Gerald. He's a bit like the Mark Taylor of footy commentary. He'll labour a point a bit too long (lack of work rate is his signature go-to), but compared to the boofheads sitting next to him he at generally keeps the hyperbole to a minimum.

I've never noticed him display any particular bias against Freo. He's equally grumpy about most teams.

What's worth keeping in mind is that the commentary works as a team, 12th Man stylee, so they require some roleplaying. The audience on Sunday would've been predominantly Victorian/Carrupton, and with two West Aussies on the panel, they would've wanted someone to take on the Vic mouthpiece role.
