Article says 13th. Hence the term Wildcard.

"McLachlan said an example of a wildcard round – under a split-fixture model – would have the team that finishes seventh playing the team that finishes 13th for one spot, and eighth playing ninth for another.

The bottom six teams would be battling each other in the final rounds to finish 13th to earn the right for that playoff spot, keeping interest alive in late season matches that have become a concern for the AFL"

TheColonel is on the money. 13th is a typo.

Just have relegation to keep some interest at the bottom end of the comp. If a WA side finishes in the bottom two, they get relegated to the WAFL and the WAFL premiers come up. Might not work quite as well in NSW and QLD.

There's probably a good reason they called each club's business managers together for this meeting - most of the CEO's probably know little about football. We were proudly represented by the remaining Steve. Gasp. If it's about bucks on the barrelhead, perhaps every club should just design another jumper to flog off.

I, and I would imagine most of the players and the football department staff, would rather have a bye instead of watching two luckless losers have another chance at redeeming themselves. It would give everyone chance to stock up on some beer supplies for the final series.

I read this article,
thewest.com.au/sport/afl/former-perth-wi...elaide-ng-b88480701z

and misread the thread title, and thought holy hell, that's innovative, giving the Wildcats a chance to make the AwFL finals in a winner takes all game. Griffin Logue could come in handy in the return match.

Gotta lay off the bottle before reading Dockerland.

So, in effect they want to go from a top Eight to a top Ten.

It's just a blatant money grab.

If they want to make it a real wildcard, after the last game on the last round they should have Gillon out on the field with a barrel with balls numbered from Nine to Eighteen and he just randomly picks out two numbers. First number out plays Seventh and second plays Eighth.

I don't have a problem with a top 10, I don't see how that's a wildcard though. A Wildcard would be something like giving a spot to the team from outside the top 7 who wins the most of their past 8 games. That might be a way to stop the better bottom teams from pulling up stumps if they get some early season injuries.

But what tells you that Mclachlan has no idea about how to run a competition is that he floated the idea of introducing it this season. That wouldn't be the first time he's tried to change the rules mid-season and a couple of times he's actually done it.

If the wildcard is introduced to keep interest for teams around the eight, then it makes sense to introduce what I will call a wildercard round to keep interest for teams around the wildcard round ... damn it all, just let them all play in the finals.

Apologies for dragging out an old topic, but there's been an update.
Mr McLachlan's wacky idea of having a wildcard round has been quietly laid to rest. It seems crowds in Melbourne have increased this year, so there's no longer the need for change.
