So another of Gil's whacky fixture ideas floated at the CEOs meeting today is a pre-finals Wildcard Round where 8th plays 9th, and 7th plays 13th(!!) for the last two top 8 spots.

Can you imagine the shenanigans going on in the last couple of rounds as teams jostle to get the 13th spot but make sure they avoid 11th or 12th?

There are real problems with inequality of the fixture, which means any 'integrity of the 8' arguments are a bit lacking. The AFL also created a problem with the bye week after the final round meaning there is no football, which they are they are trying to fix.

I reckon leave the final 8 as is, but play a wildcard game if the only thing splitting 8 and 9 is percentage.

Let's not be too hasty here. I believe there have been a number of seasons in our history where we have finished 13th. There was a time where we would have considered ourselves as 13th specialists, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure there is someone here who could provide the stats.

So the "theory" is that it gives the teams in 13-18th something to play for and thus creates less dead rubbers in the final rounds of the season, what it doesn't account for is the fact that teams in 15-18th probably cant reach 13th anyway and the more likely result is teams in 11-13th throwing games to try and get to/ remain in 13th. I can see a scenario where the top 6 could be influenced by teams getting a massive % boost as the team in 12th tries to lose enough of their own % to fall down to 13th, the "live ladder" updates would be continuous all the way through round 23.
