TOPIC: 17'n'5

ABC 720 Radio 'Sportstalk' made mention of an AFL (or AFLPA?) plan to play a 17-round season with 5 weeks of finals? First time I'd heard it (sorry).

What a freakin' terrible idea. Where has it come from?

The Worst 'writer' Duffield chimed in that the once-a-year Derby at Perth Stadium could therefore be 20,000 members each, with the rest walk-ups, and supporters would need to learn to be 'nice' to each other sitting side-by-side.

17 games - play everyone once.

Split the comp into top six, middle six, bottom six. These play 5 games, play each other once.

So after 22 rounds, have a final 8 that play a normal finals series over 4 weeks.

I reckon it is a good idea. Finally have a balanced fixture (at least over two seasons of home and away).

I think it's a good idea, but I reckon you could squeeze in a couple more finals and make it a top 10 or something. Leave the nonsense about splitting the competition into bloody conferences alone though.

If you'll think back to Fremantle's last two seasons, rounds 18-23 we were just waiting for the finals to start. To play in them when we were on top and to be able to end the season when we were on the bottom. For the teams at the top, those rounds are more about player management than anything else.

17 rounds is enough games of football to work out who's good and who's rubbish. Then play some finals to decide which good team is the best.

The current broadcast deal runs until 2022. I can't see the AFL providing fewer games until at least then.

There are alternatives, but when you consider all the pros and cons, the 'playing the ladder position game", the tanking, the positioning for draft picks, the "incentivisation", the "disincentivisation", and just the general complexity, you pretty much come back to thinking that what we've got is the best there is, as faulty as it is.

The best and only way to solve it, is to take the comp back to 12 teams, and play everyone twice. It'll never happen, but I reckon get rid of 4 Melbourne teams and the Weagles and the problem is solved!!

I would expect less games and more finals to make tanking less effective, or at least less noticeable.

Last year a top 10 and 17 rounds would have left about 14 teams as a chance a couple of rounds out. A top 8 and 23 rounds it was 10.

Don't agree with everything Rohan Connolly says but reckon he nailed this issue:

www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-compe...20170423-gvqix8.html

Particularly the unintended consequences of the move and potential diminishing value of finals if just had a whole series of games watching those teams go at it for the last 5 rounds.

Sure fixture has quirks and inequalities but not sure the 17-5 is a solution.

Rohan Connoly argues because any team can win on the day therefore there are no inequalities in the draw.

Would you rather play Carlton and Brisbane twice each year or Adelaide and GWS?

There is 16 pts on offer; a third of what you typically need to play finals.

West Coast are an abhorrent football team. They sit 7th after playing playing three teams that as of rd 4 hadn't won a game.

90% of the time the crappy teams lose, they can win but most times they don't. Its why they are crappy teams.

We have a salary cap, a draft and a cap on football spending. And then oversee a gerrymandered fixture that would make a Republican blush.

You've nailed it Hypen, it's a gerrymander. There's nothing inherently wrong with a 22 round fixture in an 18 team comp, as long as the additional 5 games are allocated randomly (eg ping pong balls, envelopes, whatever). Instead, they are decided behind closed doors in a way that creates inequalities and is obsessed with 'blockbusters'. Anyone else bored with the Richmond - Carlton season opener, Geelong - Hawthorn easter Monday game, Collingwood - Essendon on Anzac Day? Mix it up a bit for god's sake.

For the purpose of rewarding the best performing team each season, the more home and away games the better. And the fewer finals-that-aren't-finals.

What purpose is served by giving the eighth best performing team a crack at a flag?

It's perverse.

If they win the flag then they're not the 8th best team.

I thought this post was going to be about North Melbourne, after Brad Scott's presser when he was asked about writing the season off at 0-5...
