TOPIC: 34 seconds = 1 minute

The ANZAC spirit was not just about the minute silence. It's about those men and women that have made our lives better today. It's also about what's happening in the world today. I hope that the purple army used the minute tonight to remember and to pray that the world don't implode. It's a MINUTE that matters.

If it ain't important, don't ask for it - get those old diggers to bugger-off and let's start yahooing when the bugle bloke drops his horn. The fact is, it is important and unlike a great many concessions that have become insignificant over time, this supposedly means something to everyone here (and Smiley's home country).

I won't belabour the point but I tell you I'm going to have my watch going at Subi tonight.

To add to what Polly has stated, if you can't afford a minute to pay some respect for those who helped make this country what it is, then I have real doubts about you.

We have a fantastic country (and I've seen a few who have a fraction of what we enjoy daily) and part of why we have this place is because others were less selfish and more motivated to build it.

A minute's respect is hardly a burden

Keep us updated on how many seconds short we are over the entire round so I can make it up later.

Yeah, I'm not sure there's anything especially vital about it being specifically one minute.

Me, I'd keep the silence going until there's the equivalent of $2 donated to Legacy for each person in attendance.

I'm all for making it the full 60 seconds, but to be honest that's mostly just cos I'm an incurable pedant.

But as for ANZAC Day being a essential to our national identity, that's bollocks. Unless something intrinsic and integral to our national identity is being drawn into dying in foreign wars by our loyalty to dubious imperial protectors... oh wait... as you were.

Pedantry implies a slavish devotion to rules. There's no rule that respect (to the ANZACs or otherwise) must be meted out in one minute increments. Maybe you just like round numbers?

I'd rather people use 36 seconds in quiet reflection of the sacrifices of others than counting seconds to ensure sufficient respect is paid at a footy game.

As for the lack of tradition, there's no indication respect for ANZAC day is diminishing. In fact, I'd say it's the opposite is true. Dawn Service attendances are higher than they have ever been, for example.

Honour the vets around the ground, play the bugle, take a moment for quiet reflection, play the anthem, and bounce the ball.

On the subject of merching the event, that's what the AFL are doing. They call it paying respect, but the cynicism kicks in when they make every game for a week and a half an "ANZAC" game, and market it like any other theme week, to sell tickets.

Although before it was "marketed" it was fading into the background.

Ok, fair enough. I've only got 13 seconds worth of patience for the dead - I'll put my ball cap back on and yell out 'MOVE ON - CLOSE ENOUGH'. It really doesn't matter.

Morgan, the rule I'm being pedantic about here is that a thing should be what it says on the box. I don't think that's too revolutionary.

Ideally for me, both for my pedantry and my politics, would be that they change the name to Be Quiet For As Long As You Can Be Arsed, While Thinking About Young Australians Dying For England.

The AFL didn't save ANZAC day. It was healthy well before they bandwaggoned it.

If anything, when the RSL stopped believing they alone owned it, realised they would run out of marchers sooner rather than later, and allowed descendants to march, that's when things started turning.

And my point FDB is that the 'moment of silence' is traditionally two minutes.

The one minute was just a pragmatic choice that two minutes was too long.

The AFL has decided that for 50,000 drunk Adelaidians, 36 seconds was probably the right amount of time.

I was going to register my complaint with an email to the AwFL. Instead, I sent one off to Telstra saying that most people would accept that 600mb of data use is close enough to 1Gb; another went to VUB saying they only had to put 'around' 16 - 20 cans into their 30 can slabs of VB.
