TOPIC: 34 seconds = 1 minute

One minute's silence - is that small token of respect that hard for the AwFL to achieve? I must admit, it really gets to me - every year - why even attempt to have 60 seconds silence if you can't manage it.

I put a stopwatch on the Port v Carlton ANZAC ceremony tonight - 34 measly seconds is all they could manage. That is pathetic.

Polly, it was in S.A. They thought it was supposed to be a half minute silence and accidentally went over.

I time it too and it has happened every year since I can remember.

The Americans have changed the name of their mark of respect to a Moment of Silence to placate the time poor.

They probably saw you two continually looking at your watches and thought "we'd better hurry this a long, they're getting impatient".

Those who can't wait can always fill the time with a tweet, email a few mates, or do a Facebook check in.

Usually these traditions call for a 'moment of silence'. The minute is arbitrary. Renemberence Day was historically two minutes silence, which is what is used by the Australian RSL for their services. So even if Port took the full minute for ANZAC Day some blokes would be complaining they didn't make it past halfway.

We all know why they don't go for the full minute. By half way through the ferals in the crowd have lost patience and exhausted their maximum attention span. From that point on the 'look at me' pisspots who want their 5 seconds of fame start up with shouts "C'mon (team name)" before demonstrating further lack of imagination as each bogan tries to outdo the last until we get jerks telling the umps that they are white maggots. An embarrassment to the 99% of people who are trying to pay their respects.
Personally I'd rather have a shorter minute than providing airtime for those who don't understand the importance of the event.

A minute is a minute - an unequivocal measurement and it really isn't much to ask of everyone. Is a minute a moment, a moment a minute - have all of you seen the late John Clarke's 100m Olympic routine?
