Fantastic game! they looked on from the opening bounce.
Couple of points:-
1. G Ibbotson is on borrowed time and should be replaced next week by Sam Collins.
2. L Spurr is not far behind Ibbo with his head close to the guillotine, and needs to work on his disposals.
3. Brady Grey and Hayden Crozier should be permanently in the senior side.
4. saw glimpses from Balcic and Logue that say they will be both sensational.
5. move the ball quickly into the forward line and the forwards have a great chance at kicking uncontested goals.
6. finally error dropped by about 70% with Dawson, Sutcliffe and Pearce out of the side.
oh and even with 28,865 there we where so loud it frightened the poor little doggies.

Ibbotson and Collins are completely different types of backmen in skills, size and role played. Not a like for like swap.

It was nice to win against the dogs who didn't seem to be switched on and lost Picken during the game.

Clearly I think we surprised them with the style of play which was totally different in how we moved the ball from the back half to the forward line.

Lyon reckons there weren't too many changes other than tackling pressure was higher and less turnovers.....really simple he reckons.....not rocket science.......I reckon he's having a lend of us.......someone convinced him to bring in the youngsters and let them play with some flair and take the game on.

It wasn't perfect and the dogs got back into the game but that is what can happen in a good game of footy......it shouldn't all be about strangling the opposition and defensive tactics. The older guys backed their young teammates and it is incredible the positive impact this can have! Instead of making a lead through the middle and being ignored all of a sudden the ball is coming and you are empowered to win the contest and keep the ball moving......and most of all it is fun - when you pull it off the adrenalin rush makes you want to do it again! It certainly beats running up and down the ground getting to dozens of stoppages and then when you get the ball kicking it towards the boundary or going backwards because nobody is demanding it up in front of you.

We won't win all the time playing this brand in the short term but harnessing the talent in the squad and letting players play to their strengths will go a long way to developing a winning style that other clubs are scared of.

In the third quarter when things were going awry, we kept taking it out of defense down the right wing. Poor old Ethan Hughes was sometimes quite lonely in the middle waiting for a change of plan.
I don't care how good you are at getting it down the right wing, ffs vary it a bit. Keep the opponents at least thinking that they have to worry about another option. And the only way you can do that is to actually use another option.

No one can convince me they used the same game plan yesterday as they had the previous 2 weeks. Completely different, and I suspect - as a result of RoLy's moribund after-match pressers, he didn't have too much say in what happened out there. Yes, Mundy didn't end up in the forward line by mistake, and yes, a bit of intensity and pressure around the midfield ball does make your backline look half decent, and gives your forward line a chance.

But, the run out of the backline, the intent to switch back to the corridor, rather than down the line or backwards, and the 'want' to get the ball forward in every instance - or at worst sideways - was not the 'gameplan' (for want of a better word) that they were using in the 1st 2 weeks, and most of last year.
I think the players went with their heads yesterday, and freed themselves from previous shackles applied.
Good on them!, and I hope we see more of it. !!

All it too was a telephone call between Roly and Roos.

Since Roly has used Paul Roos' game plan for all these years, he's probably the only guy that Roly listens to

I am not sure Roly likes watching a team he coaches playing like that and having fun. But he's got to let go a little bit and let the players go out there and do what they are capable of without questioning their own instincts.

Hey Roosy?
Hi Rossy!

Rossy: Mate, a bit stuck with the Freo boys. Lot of kids I got to play and my heads a mess trying to these defensive structures into them. I've only got a week. What's the go?

Roosy: Buggered if I know mate, I'm 0-2 and without a clue. Why don't you just tell them to go out and play and have a crack? We couldn't beat the doggies, you're not going to, so there's no pressure.

Rossy: Yeah, thanks mate...

Roosy: Rossy, make sure you play Tabs, his contested marks look awesome. Rossy?... Rossy, you there?

I'm telling ya, it's all about pace. It helps create more pressure, mop up mistakes and obviously create space and flow of movement. You can execute your game plan much better too. It was a large contributor towards Hawthorn pretty much getting spanked today.

You can't, however, tell me any random would be able to say with any sort of genuiness or accuracy what Freo's game plan has been from the first few weeks when they've been ragdolled (or ragdolled themselves) like that.

A massive part of the win was having a structure "forward of the ball". Roly has mentioned it off and on in the last year but this is about the first time Ive actually seen them do it. Fyfe was instrumental. I watched him go forward and organise more players to come up forward when there was a stop in play downfield. I also saw him, this time when I got home and did the obligatory rewatch of the game, in the first quarter go into the forward line and hold up his hand to indicate "have we got 5". I saw another player do it too (cant remember who now).
They were definitely counting how many blokes they had forward and it seemed like this week they were instructed to have five. Thats a simple but massive game plan change right there.
As others have mentioned when they switched they looked forward as a first option, usually to a streaming set of Hills. Completely different to first two weeks.
Lastly I think pace made a massive difference too with Grey really quick, Langdon quick, Logue, Weller and Crozier and ejecting Griff and The Fist.
Watching Mayney for Pies and he is really slow now. He couldnt make 40 m kick for goal and I get no joy from saying that. De boer is not quick and neither is Barlow. I think the addition of pace makes up for some small errors we stil make where we can repair the damage by closing down the space quickly.
