TOPIC: A Contract

Corporal Agarn A Contract 7 years 1 month ago #1

I don't know how these things work, but say if Roly was to get arse is there likely to be a clause in his contract that has something to do with not meeting requirements, winning enough games, losing the players or something?!?!
Or are we just in for a massive payout for stupidly signing him on such a long term contact?

I would not be surprised if the top men running the show failed to put performance clauses in Roly's contract. In fact, I'd be amazed if they showed that level of competency.

That said, if I was Roly, I wouldn't be too comfortable as contracts can be cancelled for non-performance by one of the parties.

Lawyers please step in here.

Without seeing the terms of the contract we would all just be speculating. To include rigid and enforceable performance measures into this sort of contract would be difficult, and you would need a great deal of leverage in your negotiations. Given Freo gave Lyon a five year contract, it's fair to say Lyon was probably holding the whip hand.

If we were to terminate Lyon's contract I would expect there would be a negotiated outcome. Unless he was signed as a coach elsewhere, I expect the club would be out a small fortune.

Freo needed to assess the risk of Lyon leaving combined with the damage his leaving would do to Freo, against the cost of paying him out if his tenure went awry (or the detriment of keeping him for financial reasons instead of replacing him). Obviously we don't know the dynamics that led to the decision (was another club genuinely interesting in signing Lyon, for instance), but the outcome for Freo is, umm, suboptimal.

(i) Stability is critical in a rebuild.
(ii) The coach is the quintessential escaped goat.

That's why they don't want the contract negotiations to come up. They had a long hard look at where we are and where we need to be and realized it wasn't a quick fix.

It's easy for front bar experts to claim that a simple coach swap the coach will fix the team and bring on a rapid premiership but that doesn't hold up historically. It's a one to two year setback with plenty of downside. Management by angst rarely achieves much.

A smart fella that chairs the Bored should simply reassign RoLy to the women's team, flog the AFWL franchise off to the Tassie government and clear out the ETAF in readiness for Choco's ego. You want development and a winning football culture? You bring in a proven premiership coach. Best thing is Choco would Google the pronunciation of a Latin phrase before using it - you wouldn't be embarrassed by someone who claims the team is going through a horrible sore bum disease.

When we signed Lyon there was no reason to believe we were about to embark on a 4-5 year rebuild, we had just finished top of the ladder for the first time in our history and were a couple of dodgy umpiring decisions and a dropped Sheridan mark away from make our second GF.

To suggest the board signed a long contract to provide stability during said rebuild is ridiculous.

I disagree. We were the oldest list for years, it was only a matter of time.

I just want to say I can increasingly draw parallels with Ross and Damian Drum, except Damian was a nice fellow.

We are still the 3rd oldest list in the AFL so it wasn't much of a cleanout for a 4 year rebuild.

Also if we really are going through said rebuild why are we playing anyone over 30. We should be giving game time to the second and third year players not playing our "best available".

The mixed messages coming out of HQ contradict the argument that they knew prior yo the contract extension that tough times were ahead.

Putting in a team of kids is a recipe for disaster. They get smashed every week and might never develop into a team. Didn't Carlton do that about 8 years ago and nothing has happened since. Why has it taken GWS so long to harness their cornucopia of talent?

Bring the kids into a working system.

Blockerhall, obviously Drum waited until he was done with football before he went into politics but have you ever seen Glenn Sterle and Ross Lyon (and Robert Smith) in the same room?

It's a crude measure, but I'd say there would also be about 40% points difference in Lyon and Drum's winning percentages as coach. Besides, Drum is a politician for a party that has Barnaby Joyce as leader. I'm not sure that necessarily helps as an endorsement of his character.

Surely there has to be more cost-effective measures, and it just seems so Toilet, than to take out a contract on Ross.
Also, I've never seen Bert from Sesame Street in the same room either, Shane. But then again, random combinations of obscurely unrelated people, unless you're Kevin Bacon, cannot add up to an identity conspiracy. Many years ago, whilst clutching desperately at intellectual straws, visual artist Imants Tillers, to justify his finger painting exercises as conceptually relevant, referred to the space created by three intersecting lines in space as a triangle of uncertainty. I kind of liked that too. Robert Smith you say. Hmm...
