When you sign a contract of 6 figures that comes with a lot of pressure not only at Freo but at any club .....it's no walk in the park.

There was a time in 2012 when the masses were on Roly's back about his coaching prowess. Then something clicked. Beat the Cats in a final in Melbourne then lost to Crows in Adelaide in 2012. First year of a 4 year finals series which saw a GF in 2013, followed by 2 more top 4 finishes culminating in a minor premieship in 2015. The club also producing our first Brownlow. Then the masses were back when Freo found difficulty scoring and then there was 2016. The noise after round 1 is now getting louder. I say ease up on the noise and wait for the side to click because sure as hell it will. We're not inside the 4 walls at Freo. I accept that many here know their footy well. If the club has signed off on a 4 year rebuild, I would have thought there's a caveat placed on the deal. Thats just business.

I'm puzzled by you guys. I saw one guy taking pot shots at Ross, and it was Ross. He admitted that Chris Scott outcoached him - that he didn't prepare our guys for what he could reasonably have expected Geelong to throw at us.

My issue is the way they win. It's almost as painful to watch as losing.

They grind, they fumble, they get a run on, then let games get away and have to reel them in. Whatever Lyon's approach is, it sucks all the joy out of watching football.

I still think 2015 was the least convincing, least enjoyable minor prem I've watched. It was like a vlog of doing the kokoda track. An achievement yes, but to have to watch someone go through it?

I'm not trying to sway anyone.

I was sceptical in '12, won over in '13 because there was some real fire in the suffocating football. Let down in '14 and unmoved by '15. Injures in '16 gave Lyon a free kick for the whole season.

It wouldn't surprise me if the players are following the same pattern with regards to the coach. I think he's a dud with one idea and a deflective media patter.

If you go back to RoLy's days as an ass coach under Roos and consider coaching styles and trends within the game since then, one constant stands out. RoLy.

The idea that you can win games by applying intense defensive pressure everywhere worked ten years ago if you consider a flag proof of concept. Since then... well, the game's changed and winning teams play a different style.

I didn't see much defensive pressure. The last time the backline was that open was when we had a young Luke McPharlin and Michael Johnson back there, trying to lure the opposition into the trap of kicking the ball in the air.

I'm talking a philosophy thing Shane... a mindset if you like. The practical application of a philosophy is a whole other ball game. Something for ass coaches to work out. Someone has to be the ideas man.

I almost got the impression that they had decided the effort required to win it using their defensive style was going to be too high so rode for luck.

Drubbing, playing a full on attacking game might work until you get to finals. Cast your mind back to the last few premiership teams. Without boring the masses, defence wins premierships. Not kicking over 100 points. In any sport you can bust your arse attacking but if you can't stop the oppo scoring, you're screwed. ATM we're leaking goals. There's evidence that there's plenty of opportunities to score but after Sunday, the turnovers didn't help our inability to defend. Like Sydney on the weekend, Port Adelaide out Sydneed them.
