The numbers can also measure what they're doing with those entries, they're called scores. The inside 50 count is encouraging, we were dead last for those last year and have jumped up to 12th after one round of playing a pretty respectable team. Not only that we outdid them in that stat, so it's not insignificant I'd think and it's a bit ignorant to just write it off.
Where we really got pantsed was in contested marks. Geelong were league leaders by a margin in taking 20 contested marks, while we had a pedestrian 9. I haven't seen any stats on where they were taken and if there was a pattern, but you wonder given their better conversion rates of inside 50's that they got a few there.
p.s. Just had a look at who took the contested marks for Geelong and it was Hawkins (4), Stanley (3) and Blicavs (3) who took 10 of those contested marks between them. Hawkins got 3 goals, the others zip. Also Dangerfield and Menzel took a couple of contested marks each and snared 5 goals between them. Our only player to get above single figures was Fyfe with 2 contested marks.
