8 to 9 turnovers which cost goals and one of our most experienced Johnson was a primary culprit, he should be setting the example. Roly can't kick the pill for them. Elvis had shoes too big to fill, although Moose looks like he'll step up when he's not injured, but the key big forward is still a missing link.

We don't have enough quality older players at the moment to galvanize the forward or backline, but I'm not chucking the towel in for 2017 yet.

Roly doesn't do himself any favors from the gibberish that he comes out with, particularly after a game like that.

Look at Port power last year....should they have dumped their coach?

Lyon has proven himself out of ideas and a one trick coach. He failed at a focus on skills last year and explains that away by saying he was AWOL for that preseason. Simply unacceptable.

What he had in 2012 was a cohort of blokes who bought into his wacky scheme, and they played for him and each other. But for choking on the big stage, that could have taken them all the way.

Clearly, they're not buying into that plan any more, and every team knows how to beat it anyway.

He's had 5 years to iron out basic...read it, basic skill errors from professional footballers, some of which are really good. New recruits get infected with the same disease. If anyone thinks this is just rebuilding kinks, you're watching a different team than I am.

I was optimistic right up til I got the the game late yesterday and saw the same crap I've been seeing for 5 years. Either Lyon doesn't have a plan, or he doesn't know how to coach it. His best performances are in front of the media.

We surely couldn't do any worse with a new coach. Even a rookie.

I just realised something really important and made a connection to something that has been bothering me for years. Rolly has to be in charge of Subiaco Catering. Now before you go off on a tangent about the canteen serving up the same crap year in year out at higher prices, come back to the way it is served up. See the canteen has some good ingredients, but you need skills to get the punters engaged, like thinking ahead for example. Let's take the humble Mrs Macs Pie I was looking forward to eating while watching the footy. I love a good pie, esp after having a full strength beer with my mates at the footy. 1st game of the season, all excited about tucking into a hot pie as the wind had chilled things down to the right pie eating temp. I line up full of anticipation about what is going to happen, I get to the wall of pies only to find every single one is soggy, microwaved to death and had the consistency of a steaming dogs turd. I couldn't bring myself to purchase it, and ruin my dream. What kind of a person serves up this crap to a punter I screamed internally, It's not like you didn't know half time was coming and you need crispy hot pies ready to go for the punters. It was then I made the connection, the cunning evil connection.

I consider Lyon has done a good job with Freo. To get within 15 points of the best Hawks premiership team on a day when we played terribly shows that he got Freo right there knocking on the door. Maybe another coach would have got us a flag, maybe we wouldn't have been close. Who knows? But you don't get a team that far - as well as a string of top 4 finishes - unless you have some coaching acumen.

But I couldn't muster any excitement heading to the game yesterday. The last time I felt so low for a season opener was Harvey's first year of coaching. Harvey had taken over from CC during the 2007 season. Our best was clearly behind us, and I expected Harvey and the front office to clear the decks. Instead, we basically rolled it back again in 2008. We even brought in an ageing Mark Johnson for reasons that still escape me. I guess Harvey wanted to see what a full team could do under his watch.

It wasn't until the following season that we cleared the decks a bit more, and we totally nailed the 2008 draft, which set the scene for the success in the following years. Of course, there were two years of rubbish football until things clicked in 2010.

Yesterday felt like 2008. It's like Roly wanted to see what a full team could do, and didn't bother really making any changes. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see the status quo being anywhere near good enough. McCarthy was a good get, I think B Hill will be a contributor, but the Hamling and Kersten trades always seemed a bit like tinkering when we needed a root and branch change. I mean, why the hell would you play Suban?

The problem for Lyon is that where a new coach would normally come with some goodwill from the fans, he instead comes with baggage. Where a new coach might give the players a new lease on life or a new opportunity, he comes with the same perceptions. Where a new coach might have been waiting years to install a game plan to all his own, Lyon has preconceived ideas of what is successful.

In short, a rebuilding incumbent coach is up against it. I reckon a premiership coach could pull it off because he comes with goodwill, but a Grand Final coach? I'm not so sure.

But maybe this is 2008. Maybe we nail the next draft, and h=go on to better things.

It just doesn't feel like it.

7.2 ( that's the number of goals they scored from turnovers.) MJ the biggest culprit. Taking a kick out and not able to kick it over the man on the mark. It begs the question though, we're an ordinary skilled side that's trying to execute a game plan that at best would require you to kick over the man on the mark. So while the intricacies of coaching is totally Roly's responsibility, kicking at targets is the players problem.

Yep Jezza, take those basic skill error turnovers off the Geelong score, add in that we possibly score a couple of goals from those kicks out of defence given they aren't stuffed up, and we are right in the game. That tells me it is not all the coaches fault. Hamling is still coming to terms with Freo style of play, Johnno has made those shocking errors too often over his last 20 or 30 games, and a couple of kicks that should have been put to space in front of a Freo player between wing and half back were hospital kicks. Add in a free against Lachie Neale when he was simultaneously tackled around the neck and ankles 30 out and there's the difference in scores.

When we did switch play, we did attempt to do it quickly, and most times succeeded, resulting in marks inside 50. Players did try to play on more than last year, shepherding was actually seen to happen, ( but not often enough).
McCarthy will improve with a couple more runs under his belt, and hopefully kick a bit more accurately, (should have had 3 more goals) Fyfe, B Hill and Sandi will also improve. Johnno needs to improve. The rest were serviceable as well.

Our problem yesterday was a structural problem. Everyone at the ground could see it in the 1st quarter, at the first break it wasn't corrected - Geelong kept scoring easily and transitioning the ball freely. After the main break nothing changed. We all sat there watching it (and it was relentlessly painful to sit through).

All of the skill errors and turnovers came from that structural problem, they became accentuated as the players tired. Throwing Johnno forward in the last part of the final quarter was stupid - all it said was 'look, we're trying' - yet it did nothing but confirm (in most seat-renters minds) that this was a footy club seriously out of ideas.

My litmus test for coaching acumen comes from how problems are addressed during the breaks. Yesterday there were none. There should have been, but there were none.

Johnno went forward of his own volition when he saw Geelong lined up with a 5 man forward line.

I wasn't at the game yesterday and I haven't seen any recorded versions of it, highlights or other. However I saw RL's presser and it
seems that informing the members and fans that he takes the responsibility for not preparing the Freo players to counter Geelong's tactics. It may work after a round one loss but it concerns me that if he peddles the same line in the event of losses in round2 against Port or round3 against the Dogs or round4 against Melbourne then members and fans would be entitled to ask the question of what does he actually do as a coach if he doesn't instruct his players on how to defend against the opposition's game plan? Let's not forget that last year he admitted in taking a back seat during the preseason.
If this press conference performance was to continue after the next 3 or 4 games RL could be in the box seat for a big payout.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's the only game plan he has...

I haven't seen a better one from him.

Time with the players is finite. Do you spend that time on skills, fitness, working with players one-on-one, bedding down your own game plan or preparing your players for opposition game plans?

Given it is the first game of the year, teams often change tack over the summer, no-one has seen each other play yet and there is little useful game tape, I can see why you would focus on your own game rather than guessing what the other team is going to trot out.

I can also see why it would be upsetting for Lyon if Geelong rolled out the same gameplan against you successfully, and you could have done more to stop it had you known that's what they were going to do.

I'd suggest we'll be better prepared for other teams from round 2 on.

These are the same rationalisations I've been reading in here since Lyon took over.

I dunno about you guys but I reckon maybe he spends summer sitting back listening to his autographed collection of America's Greatest Hits.

While Horse With No Name takes the limelight in that illustrious collection, my favourite has always been Ventura Highway... it symbolises getting away to me, road trips and cotton summer dresses with a fine floral print and an alluring hint of backlight promise. There's also the eternal question regarding alligator lizards and how they get into the air. C'mon, grab a pool lounger and a sneaky mojito and sit back with me while we plan a season's worth of press conferences.

So other teams are prepared for their opposition with new game plans or have an idea of their opposition in round 1 but we don't?

He spends his summer days listening to America's Greatest Hits? I assume he spends the summer in Reykjavik then.
