11 disposals (including only 5 in the last 3 and a half quarters) is not worthy of an I-Told-You-So.

That's nonsense, Morgan. No player can play in 3 positions. You only get 22 on the day and set list size. What he has to do is show that he is a match winner in one position. You build premierships around the number of match winners you have, backed by role players in other areas. You build a strong, dependable high finishing side around an even spread of solid talent, and a reliable consistent game plan - but premierships go to sides that are genuinely special on the day.

By that rationale, you'd be happy to swap 10 Mzungus for a Fyfe? Clearly even Fyfe is not as good as 10 other solid AFL players. But you wouldn't make that trade in a million years. Because you only get to play one of them in a given position at a time.

I am not buying into whether Logue will be better or worse than SPS et al , just pointing out what a pointless comment that was.

Interesting comeback Detox. It's just an opinion. At Pick 4 ( I think), SPS should have plenty of natural talent. I remember Harvey compared S. Hill to Michael Long, when Hilly was picked at No.3. Well, Hilly is no Michael Long. In fact this is either his 8th or 9th year at the club and have only been in the top 3 of the Doig Medal once. And I think Hilly is better than SPS at the same age.

Not sure about that - as Harvey proved, it's pointless to compare one to another.

I don't think disposal numbers on the game really reflected how good SP-S is - he made a few plays last night and could've made more if his teammates were more aware of him. There were a number of occasions where I saw him position himself, or was running into the exact area that I thought (as on onlooker with a bird's-eye view) was not only the best place, but the position to have the most effect. But he was never given a handball or a kick - perhaps the Blooz are too Murphy/Cripps focussed.

Is SP-S that good? Yep, without a doubt - I just hope the strength/conditioning guys don't overdo it with his development (as they did with Jarrod Pickett). Would I forego getting Big Cam and Stephen's happy brother for SP-S? Pointless to even think about it, that's not the way it turned out.

Just thinking, if we had retained pick 3, and given that GWS went for Taranto, would we still have gone after SPS, or would we have jumped at the chance at getting McCluggage?

I agree Polly, Jarrod's lost about 2m off his vertical leap.

'Pointless', Derby 12. Fair play for not pulling your punches.

Freo gave up the chance for SPS in order to acquire three players all of whom seem to have plenty of upside. Surely you'll at least agree that unless SPS is the best of those four players (or I supposed McSuitcase if he was your guy) then the trade will have worked out well for us.

Now, as to comparing the cumulative impact of one player versus multiple, fair enough if you think stars win you AFL Premierships, but that's not a fact. There are various theories on this, but one argument is that in a game of 18 players that rely on each other within a system to be successful, it's actually the quality of your worst players that best predicts success. I don't know if that theory is correct, but certainly it's not 'pointless' to put it forward that proposition.

People seem to spend a lot more time talking about how Dawson is a spud than how Fyfe is really good, so certainly the performance of our worst players seems to be in the contemplation of Dockerlanders.

Getting back to who was the last young fella to get a crack at the bigs at Freo, Blakely comes to mind.

Pointless is this thread. Logue is yet to play a single game. Give the kid a break. Assess him after a full season or two. Sps can play no doubt but a bit early for comparisments.
Should of taken rich over hill? No way!!! How about Palmer? Incredible first season, 3 clubs later can't break into a team many predict will finish last

Did you blokes actually watch him or did you look at a stats sheet?! He had superstar written all over him with his attack on the ball and body, his incredible speed and movement, reading of the play, cool calm head and immaculate disposal. A kid playing in his first game coming straight off a hammy and playing like he did was fantastic.

He was always going to tire and struggle to run the game out after that but he kept running and working. If you want to look at the stats then 7 tackles and 8 contested possessions are what you are getting from an amazing outside midfielder. We missed out.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
