good effort good pressure but no real standouts. maybe in the weeks to come we will see some shine. Strn - looks like he might be a good find, Jetta yeah.

Good desire, effort and pressure was the difference, particularly in the 3rd qtr.
I thought Logue and Collins did well in the back line, Darcy was strong around the ground and Straggers did well too. I can see plenty of upside in both young big blokes.

Balic finished with 30 touches, but not rated in the "Best for" column? How did he look? Very interested as twin Harleys are very much a long term investment. Twin Haydens too for that matter.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but wouldn't have been nice if we could have at least found a rookie spot on the list for Leroy Jetta. 4 goals straight in a low scoring slog should have seen him in the box seat to slot into a forward line missing both Ballas & Yarran.

My thoughts (on one of televisions most dire footy games, as entertaining as watching your dog sleep):

Leroy was always a smart footballer, he looks really good at this level - a cut above the rest - there's no substitute for a lightening fast brain that computes how to get something done that seems impossible. I thought our best player (aside from Leroy) was Brady Grey - he was full of agro yesterday, chase/tackle and composed off the boot. Strnadnica looked especially good - up forward, back and in the ruck - good mobility and spotting space in evolving play. He kept a cool head and did what needed doing when everyone else was spacking out around him - out of all our picks last year, he seems to be the best.

Collins was good with his intercept marking, Hughes was very good coming out of the defensive zone, but Logue drifted in/out (and I was a bit disappointed with his desire to get involved in contests). He seems to be more interested in staying healthy/clean than anything else - harsh, but that was my impression. On the other hand, Hodor looks the goods - he's picked up some good ruck positioning and gets into position well in contested marking contests - but (admittedly) is a developing project. I don't think Crozier looked very good; Sheridan worried me every time he had the ball; why Suban keeps falling on the ball and holding it underneath his body remains one of footy's greatest mysteries. Cox seems good, Duman clearly has a solid dose of the footy smarts - the rest I couldn't comment on.

On the other side - Francis Watson was fantastic. Now there's a real footy talent, two or three levels above anyone else on his team, but should've slotted that goal when given the chance. I'd draft him in a second.

Recruits summary:
Out of the recruits I liked the look of Strnadica (has so much upside). Cox looks like he could be pretty good and Duman uses the ball really well and has good speed. I was most impressed by Darcy, I thought he had the better of Giles which is a pretty good effort for a kid ruckman.. Took a couple of big marks and follows up and tackles well. The biggest dud looks like Griffin Logue at this stage, but he worked into the game a suppose and its early days.
I don't have the clearance numbers but Balic seemed like he is a clearance beast and can handball out in traffic pretty good. He struggles to kick the ball well so I suppose he might struggle to get into the team being such an inside mid.

I thought the first half had close similarities to Freo's AFLW team. Thankfully that changed in the second half. Take Leroy Jetta out of the side, the Peel boys would struggle to beat the top 2 teams in the AFLW league. I'm a little concerned that there's not too much talent to call on if our ones are hammered by injuries. It looks like Rolyball 2 has been implemented. Pressure the ball carrier. That's why we were flogged in Gero. We're basing our game plan circa 2012, it was difficult to changed on last year.

Thats a bit harsh Jezza. It was the first game of the season and against better opposition. Everything was cramped and in close. Skill errors under pressure were the norm but I was happy with the intensity and general flow and speed of the game – though noone really stood out as ready to step into AFL. But that doesn't mean some players were not to AFL standard – just that the nature of the game blunted individual performances. Jetta got out a few times but they all did at some stage. I mentioned Strn.. cos he showed he could take a mark but so did Collins who did it more often. Grey and Suban are as hard as they come but couldn't capitalise often enough. I couldn't help but think Suban would look better in a different role. At the bottom of the pack he is always going to get crunched but outside he could use his kicking skills better and be more use to the team. These things get sorted out over time or in more open games. Still he did a job and the team overall controlled the game better than the other mob – and thats not bad as long as you win.

On the hiding we took from West Coast, remember they had already played a preseason game the week before.

A game under your belt after not playing for five months gives you a headstart.

I thought we'd be the ones with the headstart after a 10 month pre-season?

I was at the game with a few mates and the general comment was that the game never reached great heights except for Peel's burst of goals from Leroy Jetta in the 3rd qtr.
With a spot in Freo's forward line up for grabs I was disappointed with the performance of some of the boys playing for that spot. However, Brady Grey showed that he can exert pressure and the form of Sam Collins is sure to seem him play in the seniors sooner rather than later. Strnadica is a good find and I continue to like the way Sean Darcy plays the game.
