As for the light, you see the sun sets behind the horizon which means that for those out in the open that's when they'll last see the sun. The Grand Final being played in an enormous coliseum means that the sun will disappear from view for those inside the stadium well before actual sunset, as the lights rays are unable to penetrate concrete and steel. Fortunately, modern science allows us to light a field with artificial light, which TV executives seem to prefer to natural light.

Beside the fact that a time limit and having more time are different things, the state government(s), much like moptop's wife, will limit the extent of partying or make it prohibitively costly (for things like the AFL's post GF concert, which they probably quite like...for now...as well as other large communal gatherings) if the GF were to finish at some later time (what with the presentations and all the soaking it up that goes on immediately after it has been run & won).

Unless there is sarcasm in the statement, I don't understand the "able to party longer" part of the argument.
I would have thought that starting the party at 3pm (for WA, 6pm for the east) would give you considerably MORE time to party than starting at, say 7pm (for WA, 10pm for the east).

Personally I prefer where the GF is played atm, as previously mentioned I'd like to see skills being displayed in top conditions (weather permitting) not with a dewy ground and slippery ball.
