I suspect that a twilight grand final is a bit of a compromise position for the AFL. The TV networks and sponsors have been pushing for a later start because those games get better ratings and make for a better atmosphere, but I don't think the AFL would commit to a night grand final on the basis that it's harder for parents, there is a perceived slight dip in quality in play, and they are concerned it ruins the flow of the day (pre-game luncheons and the like).

Personally, I reckon twilight (or late afternoon) is the best time to watch football. The bonus for WA is that noon Perth-time is a rubbish time for the biggest game of the year, and mid-arvo is much more sociable if you're getting people together to watch the game.

That doesn't stack up. If it's about tv ratings, why would you want the football in the spot usually reserved for replays of local fishing shows from the 90's.

It certainly can't be a big enough pull to bother.

They only put the 80's/90's fishing shows on when the footy's not on Shane. Maybe they have worn out the VHS copies, and need something to take their place. Like a GF. If it is successful the AwFL and Gillian(???) will be pushing for a twilight Grand Final every week.

From the TV networks' perspective, it's more viewers (they would have that data from the NRL's shift), but it's also more eyeballs for longer. If you move the game later you effectively lengthen the game-day broadcast. More product equals more ads.

Gil seems to like twilight because of the atmosphere. I tend to agree with him.

You're assuming it's about tv ratings and making up a story to fit.

As for atmosphere, you see the Earth spins on an axis which is tilted which means that, during the Earth orbit around the sun, sometimes we get more sunlight than at other times.

In Melbourne in July, a 5 o'clock game would more or less be twlight. In Melbourne in September, twlight wouldn't kick in until 7ish. Which would make a lot more sense.

The broadcasters have wanted a later game for years. That's not a secret, and not something I've made up.

Whether it is for ratings or production value I'm not sure, but TV networks make money from ratings, so it stands to reason that's a motivator.

On the last day of September the sun sets in Melbourne at 6.23pm, which would be about halftime. So the second half of the game would be played effectively under lights.

Currently, 5 of the 9 finals matches are at night including every Saturday night except the GF.

I agree that twilight Melbourne is a silly time for the GF - it has no logic apart from letting 100,000 people get home before midnight but that wouldn't stop them putting on a night semi-final between Carlton & Collingwood if it drew the same crowd.

It's actually a deal done by the Steves with Cockburn to put the icing on the move... they lean on Gil to shift the game back a bit and all the pubs in the main street down there won't have to open early when * Freo make the Granny.

* well, there's a dilemma. They can't be called Freo when they're based out at Cockburn and Cocko just sounds uncouth. Jandakot is just over the road so I reckon we call them the Jandals.

"Jandal are in the Granny and they're gonna win because You Can't Handle the Jandal".

This stuff just writes itself, I tell ya.

The twilight time also gives more time to party afterwards. Jandals akimbo, or no.

The difference is that I assumed you are already understood and was being a smart arse. Although, now that I read your concept of time between sunset and darkness I'm not so sure.

I think some are missing the point when you're talking about ratings.

As is, they take the whole morning to build the thing up and this allows the broadcaster to jam in lots of expensive advertising.

Start it at 5 or 6 or later, and you've got 10 hours of expensive space to sell, and buyers willing to pay tops for it. I don't think ratings figures are a factor in broadcasters justifying costs for annual events like this. They will charge whatever they can get away with, regardless.

The AFL will make sure they get a wedge of it.
