You're dreaming Jezza. I know everyone wants to look at things through purple tinted glasses and that can be great but the reality is very different atm. RL took over a strong young side in 2012 full of established stars and kids who were always going to be elite and had shown it already. This side is not comparable to that one at all and the belting we copped on the weekend is far removed from any of the close losses we suffered in previous seasons.

If RL could close the flood gates on Saturday he would have but he couldn't and that's likely to happen often across 2017 and beyond.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The Bulldogs had very few elite players eg Bontempelli. Most of them were just hard workers with a will to win, including Hamling. Elite is not the be all and end all. Obviously the game plan is important too.

Freo 2013-15 had stars, a will to win ("great effort") and a winning game plan (pressure) which led to top 4 finishes each year.

You've got to want to win and last year all the air was out of the balloon after the game plan failure and key injuries. But it led to blooding some rising stars.

The rest of the AFL don't have the benefit of being gifted 30+ All Australians like GWS, this is once in a lifetime. Actually GCS did and stuffed it up and their reward was 4 more top 10 picks. The rest of us have make do with recruiting and trading. The new players have to want to win (great effort) and the game plan needs to be successful.

It's amazing how many premiership teams are able to convince everyone that they were a run of the mill bunch of players who got there through hard work.

Dunkley, Smith, Biggs, MacLean, Cordy, Daniel. Not exactly household names there. I hadn't even heard of Hamling before the finals.

They might not be household names but they're all very talented footballers. 3 of the 5 are top 30 draft picks, Cordy was a father son pick who would have been a top 30 pick and Biggs would get a game anywhere else based on his 2016 season.

Presumably the Bulldogs still worked as much as everyone else did but they didn't win a flag because they tried harder than everyone else.

Biz, i don't dream much but I have plenty of hope. Everyday I hope I get up. And as the day unfolds I hope no bast*ard stuffs my day up. And while Freo exists I hope they succeed. 17 clubs this year will have their hopes crushed. Your crystal ball is about as clear as mine. But I live and hope.

Did the dogs win because they had more talent than Sydney, GWS, the Hawks.,..I don't think so. Surely it's a combination of both, try hard i.e. commitment, desperation and effort plus talent.

Talent without the former won't get you far.

The perceived talent of a player always gets a boost when they're part of a premiership team (or even year...hello Jed Anderson). And it shows just how much perception plays into player worth and it's got a fair glow of the halo effect thrown in there.

There's also the chemistry that occurs in lots of premiership teams, which can start and be dependent upon a critical mass of players, but allows other players to function higher than their mean level.

Also you look at what happened to a team like Leicester City, it was something indefinable that got them there and certainly not that they had better players than everyone else.

Sydney won their first premiership and they were supposed to have had no stars at all. Just a team of hard workers.

So the Bulldogs must be a bit better because Davo has conceded Bontempelli can play a bit.

Obviously you're not going to win a premiership if you don't train hard, work on your skills and all kick in the same direction but it's nonsense to suggest that you can win a premiership without a team that has a very high ability level and it's nonsense to say the Western Bulldogs were not a team with a very high level of ability. They were the best team all season long.

bizkit so recruiting mature players is a no no?
mcevoy, lake.frawley gibson burgoine at the hawks, well they did not help at all eh?not toention the two old blokes that played against us last week, but my jury is still out on those two.
before they went to the hawks apart from burgoine who was playing well for port, and i think he was in their gf team, the others noone wanted, certainly on this board there were plenty of remarks that oh no we dont want those guys here.
we had sandi, pearce collins lachie, and to less extent bennell to add in.
, to our side they were full strength and just had too win it,we were definitely travelling in second gear (maybe not),and as for hamling ,just go back and watch last years finals ,if he is not a mcpharland clone the way he goes about it then i dont know what.
i think wet toast were really pumped to win,us it was our first game ,they got thumped the week before ,but no press about that eh?gws had as many players out,but the press here were all full of excuses though.
i really only bother to watch preseason games to watch the recruits, nothing else,as many have stated here. preseason form ,yeh it is gtood to win and get minutes into players ,and if game plans need to be practiced, but who cares about past preseasons.

I tend to think last year was one out of the box as far as AFL seasons go (and maybe for other codes too). What with the rule changes, the huge wildcard that the pre-finals bye was, they had a fair role (not total) in allowing a team of young turks that finished 7th at the end of the H&A to momentum their way to the grand prize.

Good grief you lot are a bunch of sour pusses.
The fact is we don't have much to make a prediction on how we'll go this season. From Ross' perspective there was no upside going all out in a game that meant nothing. In 35 degree heat. In Geraldton. In the first competitive game after a preseason. Against an opposition where games have an unhealthy habit of removing players by suspension or injury.

The Bulldogs were only the 7th best team in the H&A season but they were the best team in the finals.

While they're at it, is there any chance of a 4 year re-wire re-plumb and re-stump of the membership fees?
