I'll say again, he was part of the #1 best back line in the AFL...it is laughable that people can't even give him that. Yes he played a role...fist, spoil to the boundary, reset...thereafter it becomes the responsibility of one of the best ruckmen in the league to take it from there, tap it to some equally good team mates, working great stoppage structures, to send it back to our forwards (ahhh dammit.)...thats generally where the wheels fall off. Freo have had a totally disfunctional forward line for ages now, but for years, even when he was in the best defensive unit in the AFL and playing his role, all people have ever done is rag on the bloke! This thread just typifies it yet again.

He stops his man from taking marks and scoring goals...thats his role. And then he relies on his team mates to help him mop up. Its not glamorous work but jeez it sounds like a defenders job to me don't you think??

The Fists time has come.
This should be his last year.
I think he will play, at least until Hamling and Pearce come good and maybe also if Johnson gets injured and there is a reshuffle.
The other way Fist might play, strangely, is if we do well in the early part of the year and Roly determines we are still in the hunt. Hamling is smaller and lighter than Zac and if we have delisted Scos and Johnnos hamstrung he will need to play.
Otherwise its Peel for him. I agree that one of our main problems is getting it out of the backline and when you are effectively a player down, its intolerable. The fact is we dont have McPharlin to make up for him so we need a player who can do more than spoil. We`ve got to ask ourselves, is Zac going to be an integral part of our next premiership team in three years?
I predict, lets say about 12 games next year, then a further clearout of Suban, Zac Dawson and maybe Sutcliffe all delisted.

Wabbit - he was part of the #1backline when we had Luke and Johnno playing. This meant that ZeD could take on the opposition's third tall. If the third tall was any good he would get towelled up, as happened in the GF when the Hawks had Buddy, Roughead and ZeD had to go to Gunston (who could have won the Norm Smith medal that day), He's an adequate spoiler but a handicap at all other times.

This is interesting, I have always thought of the fist as our handicap of 67kgs on the ride to the cup. After finishing nearly last in 2016 I'm hoping we will be un handicapped and back to 54kgs a given a fair chance. ( BTW Polly keep your verge address quiet, someone will come round for that piece of pine and use it to give Darling a spine. I hope it has lots of splinters on it so it hurt on the way in if it has already gone missing....)

Wabbit is on the money. Next time you watch a replay of a Freo game and there's an intercept mark across our half back line, rewind the tape and you'll see Zac blocking an opposing forward to allow Spurr, Johnno or Ibbo to take the mark. When you're at the game, rather than watch the flight of the ball coming into our backline, watch what's happening at ground level then you'll see the good work that Zac does.
At the risk of sounding obtuse, Zac is at his best when he doesn't have the ball.

A Dawson like player. Can't kick, mark, handball above the knees or bounce the football but knows where to stand to get in the way.

I find it hard to cop the nastiness towards a Docker player. I don't recall the specifics but seem to have a memory of the really big forwards having field days against us prior to Dawsons arrival. This also occurred this year when he was out of the team.
I respect him for forging a career with limited ability and a team oriented approach playing within his capabilities. I agree his time is nigh and needs to be, has been a solid contributor for us. I think his team mates would also vouch for this.
