I hope we get Taranto if SPS is gone, goal kicking contested Mid/Half Forward type with great marking ability sounds like another Fyfe. Will Brodie might slide to us as well which would be good. Both these players can play next year. That said I think the English hating is unfair. An elite ruckman is a massive asset and the argument of just getting a ready made ruckman through the door when required is more relevant to average role playing ruckman of which there are plenty. English seems to have the rare potential to be an elite ruck-man in the mould of a Cox or a Goldstein who have midfield quality ball handling and kicking skills. If we do draft English it will be a big risk and it will require patience but I for one will accept the decision and reserve my judgement for three years at least. If he does become an elite ruckman then we might be looking back on the draft in years to come saying English should've been number 1. But yeah still rather SPS, Brodie, Taranto.

The problem with English is he isn't a very good ruckman as was evident in the all star game. If we were to pick him up he'd have to play the forward/ruck role until he develops into a ruck, which is basically admitting we stuffed up when we recruited apeness.

Sorry on my phone so Link thingy doesn't work, I like this article for two reasons,
i) it links us to Taranto.
ii) it links carlton & GC to Taranto, which increases the small chance that SPS may slip through to us.

I have a good feeling SPS will be there for us at 7. I have a bad feeling we won't take him.

A scout I know who works for another team reckons English will go before 7. They rate him as a Nick Reiwolt type. Apparently he was being groomed as a mid before his 20cm growth spurt.

Even with all that height he only averaged 1 mark a game, he is way over rated.

If he's a scout Mule, then he's got his Intel wrong. Why pick a 205cm bloke when you know that he's not worthy of a first round pick given all the other talent available. Let's not pick up another Zac Clarke please. He's been in the system for 8 plus years and haven't delivered. I don't think he's been in the top 10 for the Doig, since putting on the purple. Pick 7 will be a gun and it may not be SPS. And it won't be English.

Don't like the comparison between Clarke and English. Clarke never had exceptional skills just good athletic ability. I think we can be confidant that English will be a better player than Clarke once he hits his straps. English's ruckwork from what I've briefly seen has been average but ruckwork is an art which takes time to master and once he develops physically then he should improve. Draft day is going to be very interesting this year.

Nope, I don't buy into the hype around the kid. The Spack averaged 2.88 marks/game across the 2016 year and he wasn't trying to get the ball (it could be argued that he tries to avoid it). Averaging 1/game when you're trying to get the ball is a pretty damning statistic in anyone's language. There's no point being big and playing footy if you can't mark the ball - simple.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but English averaged 6 marks a game during the under 18's carnival. I'm not sure where the 1 mark/game stat comes from.
He's only been playing in the ruck for one or two years.
He will be a good get for someone.

We have truckloads of midfielders, he would be be a good fit for Freo, especially considering Hannath is gone, Clarke is on a one year deal and Grif and Sandi are close to the end. I will be very surprised if he is not picked by Freo if he is still available.

And most people writing him off are doing so based on seeing him play in one game of footy (the 18s all star game).

Darcy Cameron had a really good year as a League player.. Averaged over 5 marks a game and is 204cm.. We would be able to use pick 72 to get him maybe? Tim English is a year older than the other recruits too.. Tim was born 1997 and Darcy was born 1995.. I haven't seen enough footage to really know but it might be a better option

If we have so many good midfielders, why do we want a ruckman who is useless at actual ruckwork and plays as another midfielder?
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

From the 2013 draft other than the Bont there are not to many better players than Rory Lobb pick 30ish .If I had a crystal ball I would have taken him. English with Sandi nearing the end may make perfect sense. What's interesting is other than the Bont not many have developed into superstars so most take time to develop a ruckman may just take a bit more.
