Tabs has got ok hands, but I don't think he reads the ball in flight very well. It will be interesting to see how he goes in Pav's absence. As Yeti suggests, by average he's a top 20 player in the league for contested marks, but he is only 77th for marks inside 50 (behind Chris Mayne) which means he hasn't had much opportunity to get on the end of them in front of goal, or he is average at that part of the game. It's much harder to take a contested grab inside 50 than elsewhere on the ground.
One thing that militates against him playing more inside 50 is that he doesn't have explosive pace or timing, so he's not going to get too many on the lead inside 50. I reckon his best bet is to use his good size and endurance to be a target up the ground.
That would leave CamMac to be closer to goal (he has a bit more toe), and Apeness to be the tall marking option deep (while pitch hitting in the ruck). Throw in combinations of Walters, Ballas, Yarran and Weller, and Fyfe resting, and that's a good forward line.
A smart forward line set up that way could exploit defenders, so that if Tabs was matched up on a smaller man, he could float back towards goal.
Which brings me to Kersten. I'm just not sure how he fits into that set-up. I think Kersten and Yarran will be fighting for the same fringe spot, and I like Yarran a lot.
So, pick 63 is no big loss, and depth can be useful, but if we're paying Kersten any sort of decent salary to play for Peel, then that's less money to throw at Fyfe when he gets the Godfather offers next season.
