Is there enough time left to unload Taberner and Apeness then?

CA,

I don't think it will start out being seen that way but thats how it will pan out over the season is my view.

Tabs has suffered from the kick it to Pav fixation from our mids and this will no longer be the case. Given that and with our better mids playing, he should get better delivery and be seen in a far more positive light. He's better than some give him credit.

Apeness hasn't had an injury free preseason yet to my knowledge. Now that he's over his injuries (pleeeeeeaaassssee) I am hopeful he will work out as a stay at home forward. He can certainly crash a pack and is a pretty good mark. We've also seen him him kick accurately from outside 50.

McCarthy has a bit of a climb to realise his potential but over the season, I'm hopeful he will start to show what he appears to be capable of achieving.

Kersten only played 9 games for Geelong this year after playing 11 last year. His stats are hardly overwhelming after 3 seasons where injuries weren't really an issue for him. Stats-wise, he's behind Tabs, particularly in contested marking. He may improve as he's only 23 but I can't see anything that leads me to think he's going to keep the other 3 talls out of side once things hake themselves down.

Thats just my opinion but its nice we will have players competing for positions up forward. That competition tends to promote improvement in players and any improvement up forward is something to be welcomed. Another point is that 3 of those players are reasonably mobile and based on the past Tabs, McCarthy and to lesser extent Kersten, have reasonable tanks. Be nice if Apeness could join them.

Has anyone told Roly there is such a thing as a 'stay at home forward'?

Yes but after his experiment with the stay at home coach he's probably reluctant to give it a go.

Flag,

silly me, I got the years back to front. He did play 17 games last year.

Career stats over 3 seasons give him 41 goals from 37 games. I still don't see him in front of Tabs and I'd expect Apeness to go past him i he gets a full injury free pre-season. McCarthy is clearly better again.

Lets see how it pans out over the full season

I certainly havent given up on Tabs. I believe his marking will suddenly click although it probably needs to start this year. Still unsure on his kicking. Has had so few kicks, its a bit hard to judge. Good to know Kersten is a good kick. Hard to know which two of our four forwards will make the team round 1. Im going for Tabs first selected and Kersten as they are fit and known quantities. Ape to have to come good and prove his fitness through Peel and McCarthy surely wont play first game after a year out unless he tears up the NAB cup? He may have to wait a few rounds for his chance.

I still can't understand my people perpetuate the myth that Tabs can't mark.

Check the AFL stats on contested marks for last season. Tabs was Freo's best by some margin, including taking more contested grabs than Pav with Mayne third and a long way back. Tabs is a good mark

I totally agree. Tabs has got good hands. Not your three taps Sibosado style either, but confident clunking. Blokes just need to kick the ball to him more often, and he needs to grab them in the right places too. As someone else has said, the absence of Pav means we need to now look for the other options. Bring it on.

Yeti if you say something often enough it gains credibility then becomes a truth. Case in point "our style of football does not work" (except when you play finals four out of five years, play in a grand final and win a minor premiership, none of which had been achieved before).

Morgan
Tabs has got ok hands, but I don't think he reads the ball in flight very well. It will be interesting to see how he goes in Pav's absence. As Yeti suggests, by average he's a top 20 player in the league for contested marks, but he is only 77th for marks inside 50 (behind Chris Mayne) which means he hasn't had much opportunity to get on the end of them in front of goal, or he is average at that part of the game. It's much harder to take a contested grab inside 50 than elsewhere on the ground.

One thing that militates against him playing more inside 50 is that he doesn't have explosive pace or timing, so he's not going to get too many on the lead inside 50. I reckon his best bet is to use his good size and endurance to be a target up the ground.

That would leave CamMac to be closer to goal (he has a bit more toe), and Apeness to be the tall marking option deep (while pitch hitting in the ruck). Throw in combinations of Walters, Ballas, Yarran and Weller, and Fyfe resting, and that's a good forward line.

A smart forward line set up that way could exploit defenders, so that if Tabs was matched up on a smaller man, he could float back towards goal.

Which brings me to Kersten. I'm just not sure how he fits into that set-up. I think Kersten and Yarran will be fighting for the same fringe spot, and I like Yarran a lot.

So, pick 63 is no big loss, and depth can be useful, but if we're paying Kersten any sort of decent salary to play for Peel, then that's less money to throw at Fyfe when he gets the Godfather offers next season.

Gee, I liked everything you said up until the last bit Morgan, I struggle to see Kerstens salary having any real impact on our ability to retain Fyfe.

Mostly agree with that Morgan but I still think you undersell Tabs.

One of his weapons is his tank so I'd agree having him further up the field running across the half foward line with McCarthy in a similar role closer in and Apeness kept deep. Apeness can also lend a lot of body presence in a contested situation....and an ouch factor when he crashes into you.

Then add in Ballas, Walters and Yarran at the feet of the taller blokes and it would seem to be a pretty effective recipe for scoring.

Then, add in Fyfe and Sandi going forward and who does the defence concentrate on?

The risk is a congested forward line but with the right tactics and decent feed from our mids...Mundy, Hill snr and Hill jnr, we might just have something to work with. Providing the right gameplan / tactics / system or whatever looks to be the point of failure or success
