Hi all. If I may intrude I've just a couple of things I'd like to add that are making feel more than positive for next year.
1. There is a reason GWS knocked back 2 first round selections for Cam Mac when they seem willing to trade anyone else. It's because he is a gun and a natural forward. The team will structure around him.
2. Shane Kersten played 17 games in a team that finished 2nd on the ladder. I'm thinking that Geelong believe him to be more than handy.
3. Whether Hamling was selected by default due to injuries or not, he took his chance and regardless of his projected potential (that word) he has shown his capabilities on the big stage when others only dream of it.
4. Brad Hill is a 23 year old 3-time premiership player. It's no accident that arguably the best coach in the game (other than Ross) rates him enough to make select him 3 times on the big day.
5. The kids played this year have shown great signs and pick 7 has a history of success.
So I sleep well.

So I hear that the bye will stay after Rd23, with the finals to start on Sept 7 (thurs night). With Freo's Rd 23 game to be an away game, it's all about making the 8 next year. As the Dogs showed, you can win it from outside the top 4. Now, I'll be sleeping a lot better with an easier draw this year. 12 games at home, plus playing teams like Carlton, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Essendon twice ( well some of them anyway) sure make our odds of $25 of winning the premiership, very juicy.

Didn't Adelaide already show that you could win it from outside the top 4?

Technically, yes, Shane - but under the current 8 team final system they would have been eliminated in the first week when they got thumped by Melbourne.

Though having said that, under the current system they would have had a home Elimination Final against Essendon - rather than the away Qualifying Final vs Melbourne - so maybe they would have continued...

In fact, Adelaide won after travelling every week of the finals series but did get 3 runs on the MCG in the process.

I hope you’re right. I don't know how good these players will be for Fremantle, but here’s the glass half empty read:

i. The reason GWS knocked back 2 first round selections for Cam Mac (if indeed that is what was offered), had little to do with Cam Mac’s talent, and everything to do with wanting to take a hard line on trading (esp as it related to Freo). He's only ever played on the second best backman, and he missed a year of footy.

ii. Shane Kersten couldn’t get game ahead of Josh Cowan, Lincoln McCarthy and Zac Smith for Geelong approaching finals. Those blokes aren’t great.

iii. The blokes Hamling played on in a very small sample size didn’t kick many goals. Very few players have kick goals on Zac Dawson over many years, including in finals. People still don’t think he can play a lick.

iv. Brad Hill has never in his career been in the top 10 of Hawthorn’s B&F, despite playing almost every available game. Almost by definition, that would suggest that the Hawthorn coaching staff consider Hill an average player at best.

v. I think people are very generous to young players. If someone like Dawson muffs a kick there’s a 50 response post on DL. If Collins has consecutive bags kicked on him, he shows good potential.

Quite the contrarian there Morgan. Impressed you managed to rebut every point. Not that I disagree with any of it. However I am happy with what Freo has done this trade period. With those ins, our ins from injuries plus some player development I could see us 6-12th next year. With another year of drafting we could be pretty strong for our debut year at the new stadium.

I'm well aware who was in the 2013 team. The stand outs are obvious. The players satelliteing them should be obvious too. I'm hardly Romantic, neither is Lyon. He worked a system and got a lot out of some average players, everyone of which bought into the system lock, stock.

You go putting Pearce, 2 Zacs, Muz, Suban, Mayne, DeBoer, Spurr & Sutcliffe in a sentence that says chock full of talent and I get a bit giggly. Pearce was a rising star 10 years ago, and his star hasn't twinkled much since then.

Something I have found a bit irritating is the notion purported by the media that Hamling shutdown Franklin and restricted him to just one goal in the GF.
Hamling did not restrict Franklin to one goal on his own. Franklin had poor supply, missed a couple of shots on goal and also appeared to have suffered an injury.
He is a good recruit at effectively pick 35 but I just don't expect him to be that much better than Silvagni.

So your definition of "chock full" is literally every member of the starting 22?

In that case, you are right - the 2013 Freo side was not chock full of talent.

It is also the case that there hasn't been a premiership side in the history of the game that was "chock full" of talent. Most years the AA side only just manages it (and sometimes misses - notably when NN or Flappy get selected).

But if you insist on buying into the myth that Ross Lyon could take a Sunday Reserves team and play in a grand final, despite the undeniable fact that both squads he has previously done that with have been very, very good, then who am I to disillusion you.

Over the course of a month Hamling kept J Kennedy, J Cameron, Cyril and Buddy to 4 goals between them. It's disingenuous to suggest it was supply and Buddy's injury that made Hamling look good. Using that logic it was the Eagles' supply that resulted in Sam Collins conceding 6 to Kennedy in the last derby and not Collins being beaten by a better player.

KK, Buddy is a superstar who gets his own footy and doesn't need to be fed from the bottle. Hamling stopped him from getting his own footy, from full back up into the middle, wherever Buddy went to try and get it. That equals a pretty good shutdown to me. I would take him on that alone, let alone his performances in the previous finals.

As far as only trading for stars, and drafting for the rest of your talent, Hawks and Swans are quite happy to take players of "potential but unproven talent" with 20 - 40 games under their belt ( or more in the case of a Lake or Hale or Dew!!! remember him?) and build to a flag.

Roodawg, don't you realise it is Morgan's role in life to rebut mostly anything and everything. He has even been accused here at times of rebutting himself.

I've resisted jumping in to this thread because I know that people get nasty when their fervently held hopes become fervently held beliefs and then fervently held gospel.

I think Bizkit actually makes a fair deal of sense but I also think he's (she's) taken too much of a negative view.

For the most part, the best players in each team have come from the draft and not trading and Biz ids perfectly correct to take the view that trading away higher draft picks is more likely to achieve a lesser result. Trading is best used when reloading for an instant shot at a flag while drafting is definitely the best way to do a longer term rebuild.

You can achieve great results trading big for a champion if you are in flag contention but only then in my view. Look at Sydney with Franklin and Tippet and look at what they....wait, don't look at Sydney. Look somewhere else...ok...

With this trading period I think we did ok but not brilliantly.

McCarthy has been out for a year and spent most of his time before playing NEAFL. He got into the GWS lineup only after the plethora of tall forwards started getting injuries at the rate of a biblical plague. He has a long road ahead of him to return to any kind of reasonable form and it is unfair to expect the world on his return. He will take time to reach his best and it may well be less than people here would hope. I'm hoping he's a 60 goal a year player but I doubt I'll see that in 2017.

Hill likewise is a good player but not a great player. I've never seen him yet impact a game of his own boot but he has attributes in areas we need improvement ie he can kick straight. I'd see him as a bit of an upgrade on Pearce, D but no Cyril Delicous!

Hamlin, I see him as an upgrade on the spack but then again I'd see my old granny as an upgrade on the spack. Again, I hope he's better than that but I'm waiting to see what he looks like under plan Roly rather than under plan Bevo.

My view is, long term, our draftees will prove to be better value but again only time can show that.

Best value trades is the slime doing a remake of Dad's Army, complete with Simpson's donkeys
