Season 2016 was very difficult to endure and many on DL and others couldn't believe what was unfolding before their eyes. Because after winning all our NAB Cup games, we thought that we're in for a good season. Then I heard Brad Johnson on Fox Footy, the only one that predicted Freo would fall off the cliff and it'll take 3-4 years to recover. Needless to say, he got bagged by other panellists for his outrageous comments.

Rd 1 against the Dogs at Etihad, belted by 10 goals, Rd 2 against the Suns at home lost be 26 pts. I won't go on because what transpired started me thinking, was Brad Johnson privy to info only few within the club's 4 walls would know.

This drafting period was I believe planned even before 2016 debacle. Our sudden change in game style did little to stop the Avalanche. In the end, we went from the best defensive team to one of the worst. Our attack didn't improve and the rest is history.

So, this is not a rebuild. Call it a re-stumping or whatever else, This is more of, we've got to keep Fyfe happy or he'll walk. In all seriousness, If you look at what Hawthorn are doing, they're not prepared to bottom out. Neither is Roly. 2016 was a calculated risk and I don't fall for the fact that the game has gone past Roly. Because that would have been to simplistic.

"Don't attribute to genius that which is more easily explained by incompetence ."

Roly and co stuffed up in 2016. It wasn't planned.

Is he capable of fixing it for 2017 or 2018? I believe so, but it's no given.

Will these recruits help? Yes, I think they will.

Horrible year, decent trading.

Don't be so sure. I think everything that has happened since July of 1994 was an elaborate plan to win the 2017 premiership.

I won't pretend to know what FFC are really thinking regards rebuild. First Lyon acknowledges the season's gone pear shaped, and admits they'll probably need to re-wire or what ever soft language he chooses to invent that doesn't sound liked we're totally buggered.

Then when we win 4 games for the year, they start throwing 4 year rebuild around like free confetti. Having the captain publicly disagree, saying they can get back in contention quicker, just reeks of supporter management via media. Coming off the debacle of last year, it makes sense to promise little, Then it's not too hard to over deliver, and you look like a genius. Tank again, and you still have your fall back position.

This year's unprecedented trading scoops about two years of rebuild. Half the rebuild has been pre-fabbed offsite.

I'm sure I've been positive about something at the club at some point in time, surely?!

I think the nail was hit on the head by PK in regards to our differing expectations of the club in the future. I believe when the club was lucky to win 4 games for the season and have declared we are going to rebuild followed up by moving on all of our middle tier talent, that we are in for a couple of years of pain and low finishes. The indication there and logical action is to draft some quality new talent to the club and develop them quickly to hit their prime early as we did in 08/09 so perfectly.

This trade period does not fit into that idea which has me incredibly worried we're going to be a middle of the road team with a few stars and some average players who will win a decent number of games but no where near enough to get us near the top sides. Rather than any star kids coming through to help the likes of Fyfe, Walters and co we have more middle tier support players that don't help us take the next step up and we do it at the expense of a premiership tilt in a few years time.

Richmond have been doing it for ages, maintaining their stars like Dusty, Lids and Sooky while bringing in a range of fringe mid tier players like Grigg, Houli and Edwards to support their middle of the road finishes. I don't want to be like Richmond. You either bring in absolute quality and stars like a Danger at Geelong or you go to the draft like the Dogs, hedging your bets is how you ruin things for the next generation of players at the club.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Hamling McCarthy and Hill are no fringe mid tier players.

How many teams are packed with stand outs? The Freo GF 13 team certainly wasn't. Neither was the Doggies team this year. Ideally, you'd want a couple of stand out players down back, in the middle and up forward. You have capable 2nd tier players around them.

Hambling could be very good. He was good enough to win a medal, and good enough to manage Franklin. That hardly screams fill in to me. McCarthy is still potential, but provides another option with Walters and Yarran. Likewise Bennell, providing he plays. Hill brings speed and experience.

We have only one decent pick in the draft. That is hardly something to rebuild around. The trades have brought in capable blokes who have still plenty of seasons in them.

Hill aside, the other two I dont think have strung 50 games between them together. So its not as if we are bringing in a mid 20s Houli into the team to run off half back, we are bringing in young key position players who in 1 or 2 years should be hitting their prime given their age. So we could go to the draft and try to get a couple of talls, miss again and find ourselves relying on rookie talent like taberner to effectively fill a hole in the mean time, or get a couple of local kids about to hit their prime.

Keep in mind that McCarthy was in the draft with Apeness and Alex Pearce. Hamling and Hill were the same draft year as Sheriden and Crozier?

It's not as if we are bringing in the likes of Silvia to plug a gap where we thought we needed one filled, or a Danyle Pearce coming in on Free agency to fill a particular role of speed through the middle for a few years. Hill, Hamling, "McCarthy and possibly Kersten are in an age bracket where they can give the club 8-10 very solid years of football.

The rebuild has effectively been sped up a couple of years.

Geelong have also brought in over recent years Rhys Stanley, Scott Selwood, Mitch Clark, Sam Menengola and Lachie Henderson. As well as players like Jared Rivers, Hamish McIntosh and Sam Blease who have since shuffled off.

It's not as though they've just restricted themselves to Dangerfield.

Bizkit- remember the alternative could be worse.

Imagine if you could measure talent on a scale of 1-100. At the draft, the player at pick 30 has a current talent rating of 50, but has "potential" upside and could reach anywhere between 50-100 with coaching and development.

The trouble at the draft is that the distribution is skewed. There might be a 1/100 chance of that player reaching a rating between 90-100 . On average you might expect someone from that pick to end up between 65-75. There is also a probability that the player doesn't progress.

So the question is - do you:
- take someone like hamling who has displayed a talent level of say 70 with maximum upside of 75-80; or
- take the chance of uncovering the 1/100 shot like a Fyfe / Mitchell etc

Personally I'm a "bird in the hand" type of guy. Bizkit seems to like the "two in the bush". Neither view is necessarily wrong

Im just happy to see the trades getting done. I love that players are nominating Freo from clubs like Hawthorn, GWS, Geelong and the 2016 premiers. Says a lot.

Freo is in no way in danger of turning into Richmond. Freo has a coach capable of taking teams all the way to a grand final, we don't have an administration that eats its own at the first sign of trouble, we have an excellent mid field and we have players that want to play for the club.

I think we have traded heavily this year because in the last three seasons we have mostly gone to the draft. We now have a bunch of young talent that is maybe one season away from really hitting their straps. It makes sense to bolster that young talent with experience, the fact we have managed to draft players who have been in the system for five or so years and for the most part been successful when given an opportunity, is an absolute bonus. The recruitment model to me looks to have been very deliberate. I think Ross new that many of the good players on our list when he took over probably only had four to five years of their best left, which is why he kept saying that Freo were a team in a hurry to get success.
The recap is we have turned over a lot of the players that Ross had on his original list when he arrived, he has drafted to replace those players for three years, we have now traded for quality as a final top up of what will be the new list
going forward. After last years mistakes, including playing many of those polder players a season too long, Freo will now build rapid momentum towards the top eight and a other attack on the flag.

Drubbing - the Freo 2013 team wasn't packed with standouts? FFS mate, the idea that Lyon took an ordinary squad of Aussie battlers to the big day purely on strength of will and indomitable spirit is romantic, but complete BS:

B: 41 Paul Duffield 3 Zac Dawson 37 Michael Johnson
HB: 6 Danyle Pearce 18 Luke McPharlin 34 Lee Spurr
C: 13 Tendai Mzungu 15 Ryan Crowley 16 David Mundy
HF: 7 Nathan Fyfe 23 Chris Mayne 33 Cameron Sutcliffe
F: 10 Michael Walters 29 Matthew Pavlich (c) 30 Zac Clarke
Foll: 31 Aaron Sandilands 9 Matt de Boer 32 Stephen Hill
Int: 1 Hayden Ballantyne 8 Nick Suban 21 Michael Barlow
27 Lachie Neale (sub)

Look at that list ferchrissake ...
Crowley was number one tagger in the game and should have been AA that year.
Fyfe, Johnno, Mundy, Walters, Mayne were AA Squad that year
Mcfarlane & Pav AA the year before (and pretty damn good players, yeah?)
Ballas, Fyfe & Sandi AA the following year (that Sandilands guy goes OK too)
Michael Barlow - enough said
Lachie Neale - young but already showing serious talent
Danyle Pearce - 06 Nab rising star and regular indigenous all stars team member
And Duffman's disposal out of the backline was exquisite, so he was no onlooker.

I make that a minimum of 10, and arguably 13+ gun players. So pull your head out of the proverbial and accept that that was a damn good side, chock full of talent, with some very capable role players like Zu and the Pig in support.

edit - just realised I forgot to mention S. Hill - so add him to the gun list.
