You can't apply that logic to the Hawks. They had a winning formula with their old blokes that almost got them to a 4th GF.

When the heck did late 20s become old!? Give or take a knock or 2, most men in their early 30s are as strong and as mobile as they have ever been. Think it's utter tosh this being useless in AFL once you hit 30.

I'm not saying he's useless, just that his spot has been taken by, probably, Connor Blakely and my guess is the club see no reason to have a 29 year old on the list when there are Blakely, Balic, Weller etc waiting in the wings.

As for the Hawthorn argument, we tried to be like Hawthorn this year and look where that got us.

I see what you are saying Gumnut and agree to some extent I think you will see the Hawks drop further next year as they will have a really aged and battered list, some those guys like Gibson were just going at the end of this season. As for D Pearce he still has good pace and I reckon may be re-invented as a half back next season. I think that's what they tried to do with Barlow this season (half forward) but he just did not have the leg speed. We have too many Barlow type players it is what killed Muz and the Pig.

It's not about age in isolation. It's about whether a player is going to be picked in the team. If not, and age means they are unlikely to improve, then a player / club needs to look at whether its the best thing for both parties for that player to stay on the list.

Mitchell isn't the best comparison for Barlow at Hawthorn - Brad Sewell is. Sewell had been a great servant of Hawthorn, but could no longer crack the best 22 because they had enough old, tough, slow guys. So, he retired before his 30th birthday.

Was B Hill a better player than Sewell in 2014? Probably not. Was B Hill selected before Sewell? Yes.

Well yes you can because when Lake was recruited they hadn't won their first of 3 and Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Gibson 30+. We should have won that game, had them on toast and then fell for the Brian Lake trap. And some of the guys eg de Boer and Barlow not yet 30 but playing better footy and more durable than some of our 30+ players who are being retained .indefinitely.

Except it will be a much lower pick or player for B Hill than this year's Slammo and the pick 20 this seasin is worth quite a lot given the first 20 or so this draft are actually quite good before dropping off. There's also the chance he just walks from Hawthorn and we get him for nothing in the pre season draft.

The OOFTIT's aren't in the contest because he wants to play with his brother.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Players don't walk to the PSD anymore. The notion that we get B Hill next year for nothing doesn't stack up.

Pick 3 definitely gone to GWS who continue to play hard ball on Cam. Doesn't much matter because top 12 this year are all around the same quality. We will get pick sevenish if I read the tealeaves right and get a couple in the teens from GWS which we can use to seal the deal for the Dog and Cat.

What I'm factoring in with the Hill deal is Hawthorn's desperation for him to be traded out. Maybe they should see if they can winkle another steak-knives player into the deal for that pick (Litherland?).

jimb2 Petition to keep Barlow 7 years 7 months ago #56

It's not the club that's pushing Barlow out, he's got to be looking for longer term playing options. He might also be thinking about a move home before retirement. The club would likely keep him, but won't guarantee him a regular game or even being on the list for long.

Rebuilding means grabbing a bunch of players with a lot of blue sky above them and seeing what they've got. We all know what Barlow has got. If he can swing a longer contract somewhere in Melbourne, he'd be a mug not to take it. I reckon he's also a chance to make it as an ex-player broadcaster, and it would be better to launch that from Melbourne.

A lot of people will love to see him stay, including me, and I guess including a part of Barlow.
