The whole squad is depth at the moment. 484 games of football need to be played by 38 people.

If Ross wants to drop 21 year olds back to the WAFL everytime they miss a target, he's going to need a few players who can play AFL football 22 times in a row.

Either that or provide an eight hundred dollar pen in the membership pack.

Anyone saying it's worthwhile getting rid of Barlow due to a rebuild but trading draft picks for B Hill this trade period is a good idea is a hypocrite.

Shane's on the money, we need enough players to fill out the year and teach/support the kids. Mickey is perfect for the job.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The two ideas aren't incompatible. While i agree there is still room for Barlow on the list Brad Hill is 23 and if you were looking to build a pacier team he fits the bill for somewhere from 5-7 years.

They certainly are when we can get B Hill next year for cheap and maintain a pick for the 20th best player in the draft as well and Hill is a bit parts role player rather than anyone who will have any impact on a premiership tilt that won't be happening next season.

if you take him next year you will be giving away a pick in the super draft, Biz you said this years draft isn't as good as next years will be , so just trade for players this year and use all your picks next year.

The Brad Hill deal is done. The question you have to ask yourself is would you trade Chris Mayne for Brad Hill? I think win win for both clubs.

Bizkit, I don't think we could've got him next year as the Hawks were pretty keen to free up space on their list and Brad Hill fit the bill as he wanted out. So if Freo didn't do the trade they would've turned to WC.

We may only get an end of second round pick for Mayne, given his age, so that's a fairly reasonable price.

I tend to see Brad as an integral part of the Hawks premiership years. The Hawks selected him and Anderson amongst others as they identified the leg speed of their squad as a key weakness and Hill delivered in spades.

If AFL football was just about sending out your 22 best players, then Barlow would be a shoe-in. But you have to pick a balanced team, and Lyon has shown over the past two years that Barlow isn't an automatic selection. I can't read Lyon's mind, there is some evidence to suggest he doesn't think Barlow can play in the same midfield as Mundy, Fyfe, Neale and now Blakely.

If you can't get your best players on park at the same time, then you need to redress your squad balance. We have excess hard-but-slow ball winners. We have a lack of genuine speed and people who can take the game on with pace. I don't see how advocating for moving on Barlow and bringing in B Hill would make someone a hypocrite, especially given their age.

As for keeping Barlow as a stable pony, I reckon that's beneath him. He's a quality, competitive player stuck behind better players at his position. He'd hate being dropped to play at Peel. Given everything he's given to the club, I think that's unfair on him, and from the evidence this year he would be unhappy about it. Barlow's character is beyond question, but if he's going to be unhappy next year that will affect the squad, and the club should do their best to help him get somewhere he can play.

Personally, I don't rate B Hill as highly as others on here, but he provides some things we lack and I'm happy to be proven wrong. Getting a second round pick for Mayne would be a windfall, but I don't think it follows that giving that pick to Hawthorn represents a good deal simply because Hill could (potentially) contribute more than Mayne.

Radio this morning said that GCS are not interested in a trade for Barlow. They will wait till he is delisted and pick him up for nothing. I hope Barlow is not too disappointed with Freo, we were the only team willing to actually play him at AFL level, he has played finals including a GF while at Freo, so has had many opportunities that the average AFL player may not get. With Fyfe and others returning to the team there probably is not a regular spot in the team for him. I am guessing this conversation was had with Barlow and his management and they were not happy with those terms, hence his desire to look elsewhere.
Players come players go, I am sure the Hawks would have liked to have kept Kennedy and McGlyn but they did not fit into the team even though they are more than handy players. They have shed a number of good players and I will guarantee most were crowd favourites, but four flags since 2008 soon wins over the crowd to new favourites.

Essendon would have drafted Barlow originally but we jumped in front of them in the 2010 rookie draft after they took Kyle Hardingham in the PSD. He was going to get his chance with or without us

I don't get it. Barlow can still really impact matches for us. Was played out of position, punished for low output, came back, gunned it, and now he's not good enough? A couple of his games this year were the best games by any Fremantle player in 2016, except maybe lachie neale.

Or in another nutshell, age. If you want to revitalise your list it's the old dudes who have to go (or at least some of them). Barlow getting the boot is no indication the club thinks he's not up to it, more that younger midfielders showed last year that they are the future and so we are going to play them.

So applying your logic Burgoyne, Hodge, Mitchell and Gibson should have been out the door at the Hawks 2 seasons ago. And not to mention the recruitment of Brian Lake at a senior age. It's really more a case of keeping the most appropriate senior players on the list. I fail to see how Danyle Pearce at 30+ is more worthy inclusion than Barlow, a spring chicken by comparison and Michael Johnson must be really stretching the friendship with his continued absence due to injury, again 30+. The biggest example of a senior player standing in the way of younger players developing is Sandi and to a lesser extent Jon Griffin. Zac Clarke clearly plays better when he is leading the ruck however looks like having to wait till he's 28-29 to get a clear run at the job. I'm not saying these guys should be ditched but just putting forward a clear difference in the way Barlow has been treated.
