Listening to the way in which Barlow is spoken of, I have a feeling that we are all being prepared for his delisting if not picked up as trade. Gold Coast want him but don't want to cough up anything at the trade table and would probably jump at picking him up a delisted free agent and the way Lloyd and co seem to talk is emphasising the youth angle and portraying him as the old bloke with a wonky leg who is holding back the midfield development. Their ruse of allowing Michael the opportunity to explore other opportunities is a bit of a smokescreen in my opinion. I see him as our equivalent of the senior players on the Hawks list, a little slow but ball magnets whose use of the ball is very effective against any other team not diligent in locking him down as Port found earlier this season.

I expect The Spack to get charged with the crackdown on Creepy Clowns soon - the coppers might nab him at a bus stop (or something).

Morgan Trade News Latest 7 years 7 months ago #17

Gumnut, I reckon a delisting could be on the cards if Freo can’t engineer a trade. Here’s what Barlow’s agent told SEN radio today:

"He's by no means out at Fremantle, but an interesting question at the moment is what Fremantle want to do with their list. Whether they want to get younger, whether or not there's younger players that need opportunity.
All those sorts of mature discussions are taking place and if that means Mick gets an opportunity elsewhere, we'd certainly look at it."

I reckon the ‘mature conversations’ are around the facts and opinions below:

Facts

Fremantle won 6 games last year
Fremantle had the oldest list in the AFL last year
Barlow will be 29 before next season starts
Barlow is out of contract

Fact-based opinions

Barlow plays best on-ball as an inside mid.
There are a number of players on Freo’s list that play a similar role to Barlow, including:
  • Mundy (captain)
  • Fyfe (25 Brownlow Medalist)
  • Neale (23 Doig Medalist who broke AFL record for possessions last year)
  • Blakely (20 years old, pretty good)
Other than Mundy, all of those players are younger and have contracts.
Lyon has preferred those other players in Barlow’s preferred role, meaning Barlow has been moved to the flanks or dropped.
Barlow hasn’t been effective in other roles (unless you count tagging).
Barlow did not like being dropped.

Opinions

Between Mundy, Fyfe, Neale, Blakely and Barlow there is very little leg-speed, and not much elite kicking. Can you play all of those guys in the same team?
If choosing between those players, it’s very likely Lyon will drop Barlow.
Barlow is a ripper bloke, who would be great to keep around the footy club if he was happy playing a supporting role, and would be first picked if there was a long-term injury.
Back-up players are for teams that think they are a realistic chance of winning a premiership. Freo probably isn’t a realistic chance of winning a premiership next year.
Barlow is too good a player not to be playing regular AFL footy, and I think he thinks the same. He probably wouldn’t be happy in that role.
Barlow has more value for another club.

If you share those views, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll be at Freo next year.

Facts: Freo won 17 games last year (18 if you include finals) and 4 this year.

However, out-of-contract Fremantle midfielder Michael Barlow – who has been linked to the Suns – is not in the club's trade plans.

"Probably not," Ashcroft said when asked if the Suns are interested in Barlow.

Looks like GC is out of the running for Barlow..

Sorry Davo, I got caught between 4 wins and 16th place. And yes, I should have said 'last season' to clarify.

Yep, you make a lot of sense Morgan. Would love to have Barlow around, a great clubman with real wit and humour...and he can play...and a vice-like tackler. Who could forget his BoG against the poor pussy cats at Geelong in that final? But, if he can get a gig elsewhere, playing regular footy, then great.
And yes, we need more speed, not only through the middle but more importantly across half back.

As Roly said at the Doig, they went to the well with the same players and got found out. The likes of Langdon, Weller, Blakely, Hughes, Balic, Tucker, not to mention our other players U25 in Neale, Bennell, Apeness, A. Pearce, Fyfe, Walters, Collins, Crozier, Sheriden, Sutcliffe, then you throw in B. Hill, Cam Mac, Kersten and possibly Hamling, you suddenly see an U25 team that would be more then competive.

There's no place for Barlow in a Freo side going forward. Because, what do you do with players of the calibre of Mundy, S.Hill, D. Pearce, Sandi, Johnno, SCOS, Dawson, Ballas, Yarran, who are all over 25 and would be in the best 22.

Sadly Morgan is right. And if Barlow can go somewhere where he is needed, he should go. But in some ways I think Barlow may end his career in the same way he started it before he got to Freo. A great player, but for some reason the clubs just don't see it.

If our list is too good to have Michael Barlow on it then I can only assume there was a tallying issue with the ladder this year.

He's only a depth player now who would play if someones is injured. But seeing as we arnt going to contend sadly he will have to make way for someone else's development.
He's too good for WAFL but geez he would be great to have around the club to help the kids in some type of mentoring role.
