We need to stop looking for cheap parts.
Sydney were able to pay big money for Lance Franklin because they knew it meant they didn't need to worry about poncing about with half a dozen key forwards hoping to get lucky. Instead they could ponce around with someone like Aliir Aliir hoping to get lucky.
It's a tough gig recruiting but if you can lock in some actual certainties, instead of hoping someone will be better than their career form indicates, you can take more risks in other places.
If, for example, Fremantle landed an actual top flight key forward they could cut Taberner, Apeness, Mayne and Hannath, take a risk on a young ruckman and pick up a decent defender to join Alex Pearce, who won't have to spend the next three years being shuffled from the forward line to the backline.
