TOPIC: Rolyball

It has been posted a few times on other topics.
The Western Bulldogs seem to be playing a very similar game style to what we were executing in 2013 and early 2015.
One of the knocks on them throughout the year has been their inability to post big scores. I wonder do they fit into David Kings premiership quadrant. Noone seems to be to critical of the aesthetics of their game style.
Watching them play each and every player seems be 100% committed to the cause and believing in the cause of "Why not us", similar to when we played under the mantra "anywhere, anytime".
Maybe there is not so much an issue with the design but more so a belief in the design and personnel? Maybe it has impacted our players application to work their tails off to get the ball into our forward line to forwards that don't seem to able to take a contested mark or convert the set shot? Early in the telecast last night the Bulldogs inside tackle count was through the roof similar to us at our best.
Perhaps with the addition of some fresh personnel a sweep out of some players to freshen the place up, we could be reinvigorated? I wonder did we really need to find the extra 2 goals that we desperately strived for or was this a fallacy? After all we only lost to the best team in a generation by 15 points. It could very well be argued that this was due to the skill execution of a couple of our best players on the day as opposed to any issue with game plan.

It's not just game style that gets them the wins - it's their attitude too:

I think the difference with the dogs to us - is that they move the ball much better from the backline - Boyd, JJ and Easton wood are great at turn over and transition - for us we have Mick johnson but no one else with that ability yet

All you need is two or three star players around the ball who can create something out of the congestion.

If all the other players around the ground are good players you are a chance.

The rise of the Bulldogs has coincided with Libratore returning three weeks ago. Coupled with Bontempelli.

As a commentator that doesn't sound all that good and you would probably be out of your 250k a year gig on Fox Footy having to now do the only other job you are qualified to do and thats sell real estate.

So premiership quadrant indicators it is. Which I am pretty sure is a graphical display of percentage.

Listening to all those experts talk on Fox.....highlighted to me that there is not a lot to be expert about.

Fox footy commentators fill a much needed gap.

The dogs game was certainly pressure and congested at times. The difference between them and pure Rolyball are the lack a of a big spud to punch it out of bounds for a 'defensive reset'. Skilful, fast players and good functioning units of them at each end of the ground.

No doubt, the pressure, pace and congestion of footy goes up in finals. The team that can win the hardest ball in tight clinches, is going to maintain an advantage. I don't think it's a style you can sustain, even at a lower gear, all year. Which is my current theory of what Lyon has tried to do.

What I like about the Bulldogs is that their players put the ball in the right spot. They kick the ball to the advantage of their forwards and they handpass to a team mate's hands, not his chest. It's not necessarily good skills, it's because they've got a lot of smart footballers.

The Bulldogs are a case in point. As you say they win and control the ball effectively under extreme pressure.

But the analysis just assumes this and starts focusing on field position.

They stop play and highlight where players are and connect them to form shapes and package it as a defensive structure. I am pretty sure its players just randomly being there at that point in time.

Good luck to David King but I am sure most of you have dealt with Transformation Consultants over the years and know a scam when you see it.

The thing I've enjoyed most about the Dogs wins are the exciting fast paced football they employ to get past opposition defences. It's about as far removed from RL football as it gets.

Players like Johannisen, Biggs and Boyd get the ball moving at great speed through any opposition zone as a first option with permission to take on players with run and carry as well as precision kicking (both short and long) into the corridor. They don't get the footy and then immediately look sideways and backwards repeatedly before getting locked into a corner and kicking to a contest anyway.

They are coached the right way and it is paying off in spades for them. I hope to see RL give up on the slow sideways movement and give blokes like Crozier (and maybe Weller or Tucker if they are given time on a back flank) the freedom to attack and create rather than blindly follow team protocols to retain the footy sideways.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Is that not how we looked to be playing for nine rounds last year?
Just listened to the Menegols podcast with Barlow and get a sense that other clubs may be creating a more enjoyable atmosphere to play football at. Maybe this assists in players still being ready to produce the level of intensity and skill execution needed to be competitive?

The other thing the do well is "kick to grass" to the advantage of a teammate, rather than put the ball where it can easily be turned over.

Not from what I saw, we had a dominance at the clearances which meant the ball rarely went back and the way Fyfe and Sandi were marking everything in the air our kicks to contests were generally a pretty good chance of a win for us.

Just ask McPharlin, SCOS or any player about RL's thoughts on taking the play on and backing yourself. Or the reports from training about players being stopped in the middle of drills because they passed to a teammate ahead instead of someone sideways or backwards.

A lot has been said before, but I'm fuming that our team locked up shop after losing to Carltoon in Round 5 because of 'injuries'. Many here accepted that - accepted that we should simply plan for 2017. Our coach, and the administration of the club (I suppose,) felt that too many key players were missing to try any further.

Ok, just look at the Bulldogs - add up their injuries (and to their 'key' players) and see how we compare:

Backs:
Marcus Adams (Foot) Season; Robert Murphy (Knee) Season; Kieran Collins (Shoulder) Season; Dale Morris (Back) 4 weeks; Easton Wood (Hamstring) 4 weeks and then (Ankle) 3 weeks; Matt Suckling (Achilles) 4 weeks and then 2 weeks and then 3 weeks; Matthew Boyd (Achilles) 4 weeks; Zane Cordy (Shoulder) 18 weeks; Joel Hamling (Foot) 2 weeks) and then (Shoulder) 7 weeks and 2 weeks.

Mids:
Mitch Wallis (Leg) Season; Lin Jong (Collarbone) 1-2 weeks; Tom Liberatore (Ribs) 1 week and then (Ankle) 4 weeks; Jack Macrae (Hamstring) 6 weeks; Bailey Williams (Hamstring) 8 weeks; Mitch Honeychurch (Hamstring) 8 weeks; Luke Dahlhaus (Knee) 5 weeks; Jason Johannisen (Hamstring) 10 weeks; Koby Stevens (Abdominal) 6 weeks; Roarke Smith (Knee) Season; Caleb Daniel (Hand) 2 weeks.

Fwds:
Jack Redpath (Knee) Season; Jake Stringer (Shoulder) 3 weeks; Toby McLean (Foot) 9 weeks; Tom Boyd (Shoulder) 9 weeks and then (Suspension) 2 weeks; Clay Smith (ACL) first 14 weeks; Stewart Crameri (Drug Cheat) Season; Nathan Hrovat (Knee) 19 weeks and then (Shoulder) 4 weeks; Josh Dunkley (Hamstring) 7 weeks and then (Shoulder) 2 weeks; Tory Dickson (Shoulder) 4 weeks.

Ruck:
Tom Campbell (Thigh) 4 weeks and then (Foot) 13 weeks; Jordan Roughhead (Ankle) 4 weeks and then (Head konk) 1 week; Luke Goetz (not sure) 12 weeks.

I am gobsmacked that anyone could think that tossing this year away was a worthwhile thing to do. When I look at Footscray heading into a GF after what they've endured this year....they even won last night without a ruckman for most of the game!

In terms of importance to their club I don't see anything approaching the combination of McPharlin (retired) and then Sandilands, Fyfe, Johnson and Bennell who played about 15 games between them.

The club absolutely did the right thing getting games into Weller, Blakely, Langdon, Hughes and Collins et al. What do you think the Bulldogs have been doing for the last 10 years that they haven't been playing finals??
