TOPIC: WAFL Grand Final

That's a third of the team. A third of the team are individually good enough to be playing in the AFL grand final next week. Yarran and Collins are hardly lightweights either. Connor Blakely got nearly double the possessions of the best South Fremantle player last week.

Even if you ignore the size of them and that they spend every day working full time at being better at football, even if you returned them to the real world, with training three evenings a week, after a full day of work, in a clapped out old gym that saw it's best days 30 years ago and you wouldn't fit that team into your salary cap. Fremantle are treating the WAFL, it's players and it's members with contempt.

It might be within the rules but I'm reminded of the poet D.R. Parton's words

Jolene.
Jolene.
Jolene.

There will be a time when Fremantle need a flexible host club system during September but by being tossers about it this year, they've shown they can't be trusted to act with any good will and the rules will have to be tightened up.

When that day comes, I better not hear a peep out of the Peel cheer brigade.

I've never liked the alignment system and believe they should have stand alone clubs. but I also think Subiaco get an unfair advantage due to the money they are able to make from bar sales, etc at AFL games. No other club can compete financially with them.

I am not a supporter of Peel either, nor am I supporter of the WAFL alignment, but i just beg to differ on the point about all the boys being "AFL hardened". I also think it would be pretty unfair in the scheme of things to say to De Boer (who has to play somewhere, Clancee, Tendai and so on) that even though they've been slogging it out in the Magoos they can't play in the grand final because other teams thought it was unfair. Bringing in Clarke, Griffin and Blakely is a bit rich in my opinion, but the thing we are neglecting is that so many Peel players haven't been named to make way for AFL players coming back in, despite the fact it is AFL players who have got them there. the whole situation is a bit farcical to be honest, but could have been even more so if the Toilet's royal ressies hadn't been shite.

I find it a tad hypocritical that Shane has decided to take umbrage with this issue this week and not last week.

I thought that was just you exhibiting your excitement that the cricket season had already started for ol' Easts supporters.

Anyway, I've finished formatting the petition to have Peel banned from the GF and the rightful club (the mighty Bulldogs) reinstated, I'll drop it round to your place tonight for you to sign.

I would very much enjoy, in the knowledge that it was a fair and reasonable contest, seeing South Fremantle belted in the Grand Final.

While I can see the point Shane is trying to make, I cannot agree with it.

It's flat out wrong.

The presence of Freo players in the Peel side is a natural consequence of the alignment system, a system I opposed when it was mooted and I still oppose it. However, Peel has obligations under the alignment system and they do not get an expanded squad to choose from. Their squad is the same size as every other club, including slime lite, West Perf and sowfs.

Should you accept what Shane says and not allow Freo listed players to play in the finals, who the hell do Peel choose to play? You cannot take out four or five players or ten or the whole fifteen and say to Peel , well you can select from whats left over. Can't get a full squad? Too bad.

The rules governing player eligibility were set in place several years ago but all of a sudden when one of the clubs gets a benefit, it all unfair? Spare me.

If you have an alignment system, this is always going to be the inevitable result. Don't like the result? Then don't have an alignment system but its absurd to allow Peel (or East Perth) to field AFL aligned players in the season and suddenly not allow that in the finals. Thats making Peel play with one hand tied behind its back.

People can complain about having AFL players in the side but realistically, where is the alternative? If its suddenly all hunky dory for South to complain about having to play against AFL players then where were these complaints when East Freo were knocked out of a finals Perth by the other AFL aligned club? There were none. Sh*t happens, right?

There is no realistic alternative to this unless the alignment with a single club is the system in place

I don't understand all this negativity.
Affiliate clubs are commonplace in the VFL and other state leagues.
I also know that these leagues have tighter rules than the WAFL regarding eligibility of AFL standard players, which the WAFL will probably now have to consider.
When this happens, it will have brought the WAFL in line with other state leagues, which can only be for the better.
Meanwhile, why can't we, as supporters, be pleased to see solid proof that the Dockers squad players are all high standard, and probably too good for the WAFL? After all, the Ooftits don't seem to enjoy this luxury, judging by the crap they served up in the elimination final in Mandurah.

You're going from one extreme to the other. Normally senior AFL players would be off on holiday at the moment and a few of the more keen young blokes would kick around in the WAFL. Fremantle are consciously going hard to win the flag.

Peel have a squad of 60 odd players to choose from. They're picking 5 of them.

Naaah the WAFL put the boots into Peel in their early days, Bondy and co are showing solidarity with a comrade who has travelled the hard road. If all the conspiracy theorists were right, Peel would be playing Slime light in the Grandy. Peel got there because they know midfielders win games.

So, we can allow Peel to replace the AFL players (how many exactly?) with blokes who have played in the reserves all year and that is suddenly fair? Ummm, no it isn't.

You have a simple choice here, if you want to have an alignment system with two clubs, you will have an uneven playing field. If you want a fair system, then get rid of the alignments. You don't get to have a bit of each depending on which way your wind is blowing.

Currently we have a system that the clubs agreed to prior to it being implemented. They voted on it fer cryin' out loud. Now they're just crying.

I'm gunna go and get in touch with my feminine side here and say I told you so. This is just one of the reasons I spoke out against the alignment system BEFORE sowfs lost a prelim. The unfairness also affects Peel. They can't develop the same number of players as other clubs because they have to play their AFL players during the season. Losing some or all of them for finals isn't any fairer than the non-aligned clubs playing against a stronger squad.

As I keep saying, fair cannot exist under an alignment system so moaning about unfair is just bizarre

If you want a fair system, go and play in the AwFL.
