Confidence is a fickle thing. Mayne (nicknamed Nigel for his locks in our household) had one exceptional year off the boot, the one where we went all the way to the GF I believe. But it was endeavour and no give up attitude that made him my son's favourite player and mine as well.

The way he congratulated players of both sides yesterday after the game makes its seem he's heading elsewhere, which is very sad. Personal dollars I doubt, this is more about what the club can get for him. A real shame as our captain seems to be playing with the same level of confidence and accuracy with disposals.

Good luck to Nigel if he does move on,, the kids are definitely going to miss you.

Blokes not blessed with mercurial skills and / or high footy IQ like to know what their role is in the team. It gives them confidence to execute.

It also needs a coaching team who are smart enough and humble enough to play them in the right positions (and a recruiting team good enough to provide the right mix of players).

I look forward to seeing Mayne in a team where he is religiously played as the defensive forward surrounded by at least two quality talls and some decent smalls. He'll lock the ball in, zone off and take the odd mark, and create chances for the rest, and if he kicks 15-25 goals it'll be a pass mark any more they'll be stoked. Too often for us he was fighting out of his weight division; in my mind ever since King Keplar left. He was the last tall fwd we had smart enough and talented to lead his opponent away from Pav and others.

Could make a similar argument for:

Ibbo - playing as a tall defender ... how well did he go yesterday when he was free to zone off and create turnovers and intercepts?

Barlow - played as a high half forward vs midfield role

Sheridan - as a lock down defender on the games best smalls

Completely agree 391. He played his role really well for a number of years, but the forward line mix isn't working, and I think he'll be a solid contributor for the right team. If he has played his last game for Freo I hope his last couple of years in the league are successful ones.

Me too. Good bloke it would seem and I wish him well.

Do we just get the compo pick or do we have to trade. For instance, I just hope we don't get sucked into a pick and steak knives deal with North. I can see them offering up a third round pick and Aaron Black.

If we got a second rounder I'd be grabbing that with both hands and hiding behind the bike sheds until recess is over.

Best outcome for us is he signs decent deal with another club. Which he is free to do --- no trade required.

We then enter the ether of the AFL compensation system and hopefully secure a second round pick.

As we traded this years draft second Rd pick to GC as part of the Bennell deal anything that brings us more picks is a great outcome re getting new kids --- and securing some of Lobb, McCarthy, Hill, etc

Am curiouson rule for compensation picks.
If Mayne went to another club and salary triggered a 2nd round pick - how does that work with us not having one being it's future traded?
Does the compo pick then go wjere our 2nd rounder should of been or to the end of the 2nd round??

Not sure Hypen. I just remember the hoo-ha over Buddy when he went to Swans and hawks got comp pick but it was right after their 1st pick - 18 or around there?
I thought it's just a round pick and the allocation is relevant to what pick you already have in that round.
In this case we have traded ours away so wasn't' sure how they calculate from there...
