Only one of them has a new coach and amazingly with a young list, new coach and us playing at home they still managed to beat us. Us with one of the most experienced coaches in the league.

And they finished two positions and four wins better off than us. How can this be?

They've got better talent and less amount of injuries and they still struggle to be competive. Apparently they're game plans a lot better as well. And those teams have occupied the lower rungs of the ladder for close on a decade. That's my point.

The criticism of the club is around the last 5 years of list management strategy and the coaching of Ross Lyon this year. Both have been absolutely diabolical.

Forget previous winning seasons and other teams, its going nothing to do with anything.

Good recruting as the Demons and the Blues have had, with so called better credentialed coaches, still doesn't guarantee success. Our recruting and the Roly's appointment have been a success since 2012. ( 2016 an outlier) Surely, that's obvious. As a supporter, I see Freo with more upside then what you're willing to do, Hypen.

Our recruiting strategy has been an absolute joke since 2012. Ross was the beneficiary of the previous recruiting strategy of Phil smart. Brad Lloyds disgraceful amateur and diabolical list management was from 2012. Ross was a very good coach but the game has elvolved with rule changes. Alistair Clarkson has kept pace time will tell whether he can. Given his stubbornness I am not so sure .
Clean out not only some players but Brad and Chris bond please.

Agreed, Exceed. Having our list manager based in Victoria and steadfastly ignoring WA talent is not doing us any favours.

As for the coaching staff, Roly has shown himself to be fairly inflexible. He keeps repeating the same mistakes with the younger players and all of the Roly rahrah in the world promoted by some on here can't hide that.

The game has changed. AFL has presided over an intentional revamping of the game to remove defensive game plans. Those who rely solely on a defensive lock down game plan will never be allowed to prosper under the current regime. Those who can adjust have adjusted. Those who cannot adjust will look like we did this year, lost and directionless.

Roly has pointed the finger away from himself this year by saying others made mistakes in the pre season. Fine. He has next year to provide proof of that by fixing our lack of direction, lack of skills and lack of creative play.

He started his response already. We'll be back playing finals in four years.

That to me says that Roly has no idea how to fix what ails us. Every other coach in the league looks forward to next year to address the faults of this one but somehow we are looking forward to more of the same. If he cannot fix this over the next preseason, then as far as I'm concerned he is not fulfilling his part of the contract.

A board that is doing its job should be researching alternatives as we may just be in desperate need of an alternative this time next year. It is beyond me that a coach of a team that finished on top of the ladder last year cannot see his way to recover from a bad season where he 'claims' to have identified where it all went wrong. If he knows where it went wrong in one pre-season, why is he now claiming its 4 years to fix it?

The word bull**** springs to mind.

Rosich has to go. He's been there ten years.

The next person must be experienced and external.

We're paying as much for the picks that were missed recently in the National Draft in 2010 and 2012 who are all off our list, as we are for the first rounders we missed last decade like Drum, Dunn and Murphy who would be 29, 30 and 31 - coming near the end of their careers - if they had been successes they'd have been at the age where they could have made a difference alongside Fyfe Hill Ballantyne and Walters from jackpot drafts 2008 and 2009.

You pay for it somewhere down the line when you miss at high picks. You could probably come up with other examples. Its something that happens to most clubs. Hawthorn had a dip in 2009/2010 when the two top 10 picks in 2005 and 2006 (Dowler and Thorp) didn't come through. There's got to be overlap of talent from successive years over a period of time. Its an accumulation of missed opportunities.

This is a comment on how lists are built and sustained - its not a comment on the 3/18 season which is just a nightmare and its stating the obvious to say its been crap.

But we're also at the point where we were always going to be with the careers of Pavlich, McPharlin (who were both persuaded to play a year longer) Sandilands, Johnson and Mundy coming to the end in the same cycle. (if 4 years is how long it takes to rebuild).

Chewy: if it was 3/18 we'd have 2 less losses this year - we're standing at 3/19 at the moment, bound to be 3/20 by the end of the weekend.

The list management and recruiting - who RoLy has nothing to do with (as he clearly stated) - could be getting good footballers and managing their development in a manner that simply perplexes the coach. It could be he doesn't know what to do with them. After being there for a few years, you would think he would know what to do with their capabilities, but every week he keeps banging on about 'finding out' who the are and what they're capable of. That strikes me as either retarded or simple b-class baloney.

If I was looking for a rebuild and talent, I'd be getting Kirk and Scott back.

On top of our recent 3/19 record, any Freo coach who loses 3 Derbies in a row should be feeling bloody nervous about their position. At least Connolly and Harvey got that job done.

Sorry, I lost count of the losses. I was just trying to detach any comment about list building in the past from an excuse as to what has happened this season.

EDIT: Actually I didn't lose count as it ended in a 4/18 season, but its irrelevant to the context of my post. 3/18, 3/19/ 3/20, 4,18 is much of a muchness. Polly, get yourself a new abacus.

Todays game shows that Roly has been doing a lot of experimenting this year. He's a smart cooky, and is no doubt figuring out which of the young guys can play the roles he needs, and who can't. Otherwise De Boer would have played every week. Hopefully he's smart enough to use the talents of Barlow, Fyfe and Sandi in the best possible way.

But it would be very surprising if Roly settled for 3 years of mediocrity. I think we'll be competitive pretty soon. We should revisit this discussion at the end of next season, and see how we think we are going then.
