TOPIC: Bad players or Bad team

Hands up those who know the terms and conditions of Roly's contract?
Hands up those who remember a WA soccer coach given the sack for signing certain players?
Hands up those who remember that the President of the FFC has resigned? The bloke who spoke of his determination to ensure that the club remains focused on its goal of achieving sustained success.

I have to disagree with you Drubbing, Roly says a lot in his pressers if you listen.

Drubbing, coaches who gets the sacked are normally the ones who can't coach. Harvey is in that group. And Leppiech will follow soon. While our recruiters have been in the gun, they've delivered players like Fyfe, Hill, Walters, Abd in recent times, Neale. Roly has delivered 4 of the last 5 years. That sits well with clubs like Hawks, Swans and the Cats. Those clubs have several superstars in their side when compared to Freo. So Drubbing, unless you know more then most of us who rely on media carp, to make judgements, perhaps give some consideration to what Freo have achieved since 2012.

I'm coming to this thread late, but exceed - you surely can't put Spurr into the same basket as Dawson and Sutcliffe. He has had a super year, by anyone's standards...

I see good players playing bad football, appears mostly due to confidence.

A number of our current players have shown they can play great football in the past, but are playing like chumps this year - Mayne, Zac Clarke, Ibbo, Suban at a minimum.

Confidence comes from players, and coaches coaching players. Hasn't worked at all this year.

I haven't any confidence left in Lyon. He brought the same system with him that he's used at the Saints. Now he can't use it, and he's making ridiculous comments to the media about not planning basic things. He seems to have one approach to coaching. We had a minor premiership team last year, and they played some of the worst football I've seen, squeezing out scrappy wins to get there.

To Shane's comment "that's actually quite hard" ..I agree entirely. I should have said "we need 5-8 better players, whether through development or trading or draft or off the LTI List". And I agree, the getting of those players is not easy. But the root of our problem is (imo) simple.

Reading through other comments I'm surprised that some think we have "pretty much the same players" as last year when we finished on top. I think Nat Fyfe, Sandi, Johnson, and a McPharlin would have provided 4 of those "5-8" better players we needed to be successful this year.

Lyon has referred to it all year and anyone attending/watching our games this season knows it too - our decision making/skills coming out of the defensive half have been deplorable all year.

IMHO, that is not a coincidence with the retirement of Luuuuuukkkkkke & loss to injury early on of AA Johnno. These 2 have held together and marshalled our backline for the best part of a decade. A Pearce will be a jet but he's also missed most of the season injured. By my count, we've had 3 of our best 4 tall backs out most of the year (AA Johnno, Silvagni, A. Pearce) and as much as I love the efforts of Collins, he's a first year AFL recruit.

For all the criticism of Zac D (mine included) he's our only tall back capable of holding his own against the power forwards (SCOS can too but he's been out most of the season.

It's this area and the associated problems that has allowed other teams to kick cricket scores against us. Missing our key ruck and best player hasn't helped much either.

I only hope the forward line doesn't disintegrate in the same fashion with the retirement of Pav!!

Wouldn't our forward line have to reintegrate before it can disintegrate?

Corporal Agarn It's All Down To Injuries........Apparently. 7 years 8 months ago #54

Corporal Agarn
The people here who say this debacle of a season is all due to our injuries are like ostriches with heads in the sand..

I wonder if they check the injury lists of other teams. Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Gold Coast, Collingwood are just some that have long term injuries to major experienced players.

Over the last few weeks we are easily the worst performed team in the competition. We have had more goals kicked against us than any other team and kicked less goals than any other team. No team has ever fallen so far so quickly.

Anyone here who at the start of the season even with injuries think we would win one more game than Essendon? That's ESSENDON. You know the team who had their squad decimated by the drug findings and had to go out and find some players to make up enough for their list.

As for the injuries we've had Fyfe is the obvious bad one. Johnson and Sandi never play a full season anyway, are at the end of their careers and even if fit next year will have to be nursed through the season like Pav and McPharlin have been. Pearce would have been helpful but if a young inexperienced kid like him is the saviour then we're in more trouble than you think. Barlow would have been handy but the club obviously don't think so as they can't see a way to offer him a contract for next year. Bennell? Who knows? He's hardly played a game in two years now.

Wake up and smell the roses. There's more to it than just bloody injuries.

Confidence comes from your top 4 or 5 players leading the way. When they are out in the grandstand confidence goes with them. Sutcliffe and Sheridan may have been in the GF team, but many would say they should not have been, along with a couple of others in that 15, so that leaves you with 9 or 10 GF quality players out there, and none of them top 5 except Mundy and Pav.

Yes, Agarn, more than just injuries. But Roly has played youth ever since we couldn't make finals. If we wanted to win, or at least be competitive, we'd be playing De Boer, Clancee, Mzungu, etc. But we aren't, because we want to get some experience into the young guys.

And I agree with whoever said how much we missed Luke and Johnno. Those two would make any backline in the AFL look good. Luke ain't coming back, and Johnno won't be the same next year, so we better find a different solution.
