The trouble is also that 'team' play goes out the door when players are playing for their spot. I don't know what the excuse is for those that seem to be assured of their spot regardless of how they perform.

Are you saying that because a player picks up the ball, handpasses to another player wearing a purple jumper, a player wearing a red jumper is running straight past him - within a metre - so he watches him run past and tackle the second bloke wearing a purple jumper, without even putting a hand or arm in the way which would probably give the second purple bloke enough time and space to get away, all because he is playing for his spot?

Doesn't compute with me. It's just slack arsedness. We are losers, and losing badder because we are lazy and taking the soft route.

There have been a few games where I felt like I did on Sunday. The belting by the Hawks in Antarctica last year. The first derby Roly coached was another. And that is the odd thing - in that derby I had the same pervasive hopelessness. We kept doing things that didn't work. And they didn't work, and we did them again. Yet within a season we were a completely different team. Some stats minded person might list the personnel changes we made over that year, but I bet there weren't many.
No, Roly needs to find a game plan that works for the cattle he's got. By all means get better cattle, but that won't cut it on its own.

Do the guys going to the cattle auction know one end of a bull to the other? That Sylvania heights bloke was already in the deep freeze.

Mushroom you are right. At the start of last season, when we were playing well, I made the comment that the things like shepherding and protecting our teammates seemed to be the biggest improvement from the previous year, it is not happening much now. There was a return to it in the Geelong game and we looked better for it. Why is it not there week in week out?

I'm not saying we shouldn't have extended his contract but why 5 years? If things keep going as they are will it get to a point when he is forced to go and then we have another massive payout?
Does anyone get a five year contract extension? Longmire and Clarkson are far more successful than Roly. How long were there contract signings for?

Normally in a professional organisation operating 5 year employment contracts there'd be out clauses for both parties based on a number of factors, time will tell whether they're required or in the contract.

Unfortunately this backline fiasco of side kicking when there is no player free on the fat side and the continuous failure when switching, to then "take grass" and kick it up the corridor, is 100% coach failure.
I dont care a rats if someone turns it over. Fine - thats just foot skills which will either be improved by the player or he goes and plays for Peel if it continues. We would then know at least our strategies and coaching is fine but we just need new cattle. But thats not what is happening, even good players are now so entrenched in negativity all confidence is gone and foot skills are now eluding even Hill, Mundy etc. Never seen them turn it over like this year.
I would prefer to see us play football like the Cats, GWS etc, attack at all costs, during this development period. Of course we havent got the skills to pull it off yet but this defensive BS is driving me mad. Even at our best we werent attacking enough to ever beat the Hawks or win a flag.
Roly really needs to listen to his critics for a change and get his head out from where the sun dont shine because if this is what its like in 12 months time, then my head is going to explode.

I think Ross is a good coach, I have to... for now anyway.
His boys are a mix of good average and poor, with the great not there at all for now. This is causing the pain, we are becoming a team that has forgotten what it feels like to be winning. That doesn't return in the blink of an eye, anyone who has played high end competitive team sports knows this, especially footy. So when the A team gets back in 17 we're still going to suffer I think, psychologically.

But what do we do in the interim? We've blooded some newbies which is great, we have hopefully realised we are PSUH with the likes of Mayne, Clarke and Dawson, et al. I don't think Ross has had his eye on the "right" ball in my opinion, his blue sky thinking has been obvious from my perspective. We would have performed better with the current squad of 2016 if we had Mark Harvey at the helm, pushing out solid hard footy. But Mark would not have gotten us to a GF in 50 years.

I really hope we get McCarthy and Hill. And Alex Pearce and Bennell come back to full flight. It's been a shocker of a year for us, but I sincerely believe that our club culture has improved a lot since the naughties. Ross can lead us to a flag, will he...? Fingers firmly crossed.

This from the presser;

Have you come to any conclusions with the ruck combinations?

"Not particularly. Everyone continues to get an opportunity and we dissect from there. It’s a moving feast…or famine. Everyone gets an opportunity. I’ve been asked numerous times, whether it be an administrator, coach, or player, about their futures and that’s not fair to anybody. We are going to work through it and try and build a better football list, better coaching list and better administrative department. We need to get better in all areas. We’ll never individualise. We need the fullness of time to work through those decisions."

Webber's been there for a few years now and we've gone ok in the last few years. Out the door after one bad year ?

Its not a game plan issue.

Not knowing when to go to a contest or when to stay out and defend or set up for the release handball or when to leave your man and attack or to leave your man and defend......all this sort of stuff is not game plan its knowing what to do on a football field. Its judgement. We are disorganised with people running around like headless chooks.

You cant implement a game plan if a player cant grasp the fundamentals of football. I dare say we are in a spot of bother.

It could easily be quite the opposite, Hypen.

If the operation of the game plan is contrary to 'natural' football, the confusion between what the player would normally do and what the game plan says to do could be the factor that creates all the indecision.

Either way, it IS the coach's responsibility to address that and fix it. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing much addressing or fixing this year
