TOPIC: Mayne

He got them though.

Improving set shots at Freo is surely the same process than doing it at Peel. There isn't anyone else to come in? Leave Mayne in, get him right ready for 2017. If/when Yarran comes up, review.

I'm all for giving people a chance to get their mojo back but it gets to the point of being ridiculous. Backing in mediocrity too long is destined to ensure a mediocre outcome.....bottom eight.

The WAFL is full of blokes who try their guts out but will never get an AFL game because they are not elite. Unfortunately, there are also blokes playing WAFL who should be playing AFL.

He's the best mid forward we have playing. Until someone better comes along we should at least support him as best we can.

Mayne didn't kick a goal from a set shot. He missed them, and they were all gettable. His goals were opportunistic and right in front. That's not any sign of improvement on a night when the forwards were lining up to kick goals.

But we will applaud him when he comes back to play here by crikey!

On a couple of the above points made on this thread -
1) Mayne isn't a FF or a CHF but has been asked to play that role.
2) He is better suited to playing as a half forward linking with the midfield and applying forward pressure as required.
3) Playing in this role he would be expected to kick 25 to 35 goals a year in a team with three genuine talls forward.
4) His scoring becomes less critical as he supplements the genuine goal scorers rather than being one.
5) With Tabs the Ape and Pav all cruising around the forward line on Saturday night he played this role well.
6) I believe with the talls that the Roos have this is the role they have in mind for him.
We need to keep Mayne and allow him to be played as a supplementary defensive forward. If we end up with Tabs, Maca, Apes and maybe Hogan playing forward roles, then a half forward line with Mayne and Walters on the outside and Balantyne and Yarran playing out of the pockets would look pretty good. I admit I have called for the Mayne Man to be dropped, traded, whatever, but after watching what our forward line could look like on Saturday just gone, I think he has an important role to play for Freo.

That would be all well and good if he was feeding our key forwards, but I'm sure Fre-Doh can come up with some statistical evidence that shows Mayne is not feeding it out but taking the shots himself, and missing them.

It really doesn't matter what possie he's supposed to be, you can only pass comment on the job he's given. He gets enough cracks at goal for a 3rd up forward. But this has been going on for 3 seasons.

He's come down a long way from 2012, when he was kicking 39.7, and he wasn't far off that mark in 2013, with everyone saying he's a freak and never misses. He's now 50/50. You might say that's not a bad return for a 3rd up, but he's not kicking any of them from 40-50m out (he can't kick that far anyway...) He's missing 20-30m set shots.

This bloke Strnadica, his kicking is amongst the very very best. I really hope we can take him.

Not quite correct drubbing, the third goal which you havent identified was a set shot taken in the 2nd quarter, at a slightly better angle than the one he missed in the last quarter.

We dont have anyone else who can play the same role atm, Silvagni is a possibility but the differences between the two are many. Sending Mayne to the WAFL will achieve nothing, as pointed out confidence building and coaching are the only answers.

Mayne looks to me that he may be a very effective player in a quality line up. Is he a good enough player to make a team a quality line up? In a team with a lack of goal kicking forwards then his value as a defensive pressure act player seems to be limited.
After one win against Essendon it is a little early to start thinking we now have the makings of a threatening forward line, we still need to import some Big forwards. Assuming one of these will be McCarthy, if WCE continue to show interest may take 2nd rnd pick, we will need to rare to get this. Who else has value that we could trade to get this pick?
His current form is good news for his trade value and another club may have greater need of his particular skills and be able to overlook his set shot failures.

Mayne is an unrestricted free agent.

He can go wherever he chooses.

If he leaves as a free agent we'll be sweating on AFL allocated compensation (either second round or end of second round).
