On a couple of the above points made on this thread -
1) Mayne isn't a FF or a CHF but has been asked to play that role.
2) He is better suited to playing as a half forward linking with the midfield and applying forward pressure as required.
3) Playing in this role he would be expected to kick 25 to 35 goals a year in a team with three genuine talls forward.
4) His scoring becomes less critical as he supplements the genuine goal scorers rather than being one.
5) With Tabs the Ape and Pav all cruising around the forward line on Saturday night he played this role well.
6) I believe with the talls that the Roos have this is the role they have in mind for him.
We need to keep Mayne and allow him to be played as a supplementary defensive forward. If we end up with Tabs, Maca, Apes and maybe Hogan playing forward roles, then a half forward line with Mayne and Walters on the outside and Balantyne and Yarran playing out of the pockets would look pretty good. I admit I have called for the Mayne Man to be dropped, traded, whatever, but after watching what our forward line could look like on Saturday just gone, I think he has an important role to play for Freo.
