I think they prefer the term 'price signal', Mushroom.

Nonsense?

If I slip you $55, will you make sure I can be one of a limited few to get my hands on s granny ticket if my side makes it?

Of course it is a price signal.

I think you blokes have to decide which argument you're pursuing here. There are 6000 * members who bother to pay the GF upgrade every season, in the sometimes forlorn hope that the team might actually get there sometime. The 6000 are either foolish chumps and mugs for being so easily conned, or they're evil and underhanded greedy capitalists, bribing and buying their privileges. Just make your bloody minds up which it is.

* and a waiting list

Beside the point anyway.

2016 has been a dreadful performance by all concerned. They collected money for something which they do nothing to earn and there is no chance of it being reciprocated through a grand final appearance.

Members are important. If you run the numbers, they are more important to Fremantle's finances than most other clubs. There were massive ticket sales for the game on weekend (read Richmond supporters) and the final crowd was one of the lowest this century. That means that more Fremantle members stayed home on the weekend than have ever stayed home before in the history of the club.

The point of it being a gesture isn't that the members are demanding it or that they deserve it. It's to say 'We've let you down this season. Here's this as an act of contrition, please stick with us because you're important'.

Call me a leftie if you like, but yes, if you pay it you have chumped it up, yes, if you pay it you are also greedy in wanting to use means that not everybody has to skip the queue - Generation Y have coined the phrase FOMO to make it socially acceptible - yes, the Club should hand it back, and yes, they should scrap the idea altogether.

Grand Final upgrade aside, this club is in a very interesting position with members.

Sure, on the surface they may not worry about only 20,000 turning up for one game because they have 43,000 paid up members - many of which having prepaid for their seat for the whole season. However, there are a significant number of folk who bought the membership because they couldn't get a seat with a blue and yellow ticket - simply because of capacity of Subiaco.

The capacity issue is not going to be an issue in a year's time when the new-fangled place to play footy opens.

Once the newness curiosity wears off, the Fremantle footy club is going to have to do a darned site more for the Members than they are now in order to retain and grow. Similarly, the football department with decent skilled players, a balanced team and a proper game method, really.

They've gradually drained the passion out of us. In favour of a baby-boomer corporate model superimposed on a generation who want success instantly but with no loyalty to stick with it through a(nother) extended sour period.

Cripes! I even heard Ass Coach Prior on Saturday morning mumbling about a couple of young players and the words he used to describe their progress were "These guys are doing all we ask of them and building their brand appropriately." Seriously! Brand? What the muck? If improving the way you play footy is the definition of brand, I don't want to be a part of it. Granted, footballers present and past aren't the sharpest tacks and may mix up their corporate wank words when trying to sound sharper, but this trollop is infiltrating everything and it is bad.

If the refunds were ever forthcoming, I'd imagine it would look a little like this:

Refund of 2016 Grand Final Upgrade Fee $55.00*

*less $55.00 admin fee

It was only $10 from memory when it first came in and increased after the 2013 GF.

In the good ol' days I used to queue outside Subiaco Oval before dawn on Grand Final day to get a decent possie. I also used to queue up overnight outside the Entertainment Centre in the pouring rain to get tickets to U2, Dire Straits, etc.

It was a hit and miss affair. Generally the hits outweighed the misses. Fast Forward to the 21st century and I just get my phone out of my pocket. But there is still a queue of sorts.

I don't go to Christmas sales or queue up overnight for the latest iPhone, but I know people who would happily pay someone else to queue for them. iPhones all sold out? Too bad.

A refund for not making the finals would be a nice gesture, but you lot would just see this as a reason to keep on charging it.

I haven't always been in the financial position to pay for such luxuries. I had to wait 10 years to afford a reserved seat. I am happy to keep paying, so call me a chump.

( waiting )

[Edited by Davo]: Actually, you firstly need to pay me $50 to call me a chump, and then I'll decide whether to let you or not (no refunds).

Have to take issue with you, once again, Mushy. It's really, absolutely, nothing to do with the haves and the have nots. This is footy, not politics.

You, or any other member, who wants this chumpish privilege can have it. It's yours for the asking. All you have to do is let the club know that you're willing to fork out the money, and it gets lumped onto your annual membership costs.

Except, of course, you'll have to join a waiting list for this (admittedly expensive) benefit, as a surprising number of people with foresight have already chosen to do so, and the club felt obliged to cap the number on the list to 6000 a few years ago. Ouch. Is that why you're so pi**ed off?

Although, if this season gets any worse, the club may struggle to retain members. So opportunities may yet open up....

Taking on board what you're saying here, perhaps instead of the refund, they could could let you give them another $50 to show their appreciation.

Hell, we're 0-9, make it a $100.

To try and help the club out I googled "member gestures" ...

Don't do that.

Absolutely this is about footy, so there shouldn't be a scheme to take cash from people to guarantee a ticket to watch a grand final on the small chance the team you follow makes it, yet if they don't we've done nothing for it more than add an extra tick box on the membership form, but we'll keep the cash anyway.

It's stupid. And you're feeding the stupidness.
