I think it's fair to say that at the end of the year heads should roll if we're going to move forward! The performance this year, as a club, has to be considered unacceptable!

Some bad luck.....211, Fyfe, Johnson, Bennell and Mundy injured and Pav struggling hasn't helped this year.

Some parts are poorly run otherwise we'd be in the top four. But over the last 4 years clearly some things were run well because we did quite well.

We do amazingly well given we have some average players which our coach manages usually to allow for and cover, except when we have 4-5 guns on the way out or injured.

I don't believe it will get worse before it gets better, Hypen.
An inexperienced defensive pairing in Hughes and Pearce will gel well over coming weeks, our midfield and run from defence cannot be worse and the boys going back to the WAFL - except Clarke - seem to be eating the ball they are that desperate to regain form and a starting berth, and the injured won't always be injured.
I just don't see 8 goal run-ons happening all that often over the remainder of the season and into next, for two and a half quarters we were competitive and able to square things up, even out-perform the reigning premiers in certain aspects of the game... in Tasmania.

Hmmm...let me see...what is the key difference from where we were at from 2007-2010 vs 2011 and onwards...it couldn't be draft position, now could it?

(disclaimer on 2010, which pretty much would have to go down as one of the biggest single draft busts in our history incidentally)

(further disclaimer the early 2000's alumni had as much to do with the recent run near the top)

At the beginning of 2010 we were written off by all and sundry and seemingly staring down the barrel at a double barrelled period of non-competitiveness. But there were some great picks at the draft (mostly midfielders) that bore immediate fruit, plus some canny raiding of state leagues for mature agers.

But we've had an imbalanced list since then and it's been an hourglass list in terms of our talent-age ratio, where we've been skinny for talent in the middle age bracket while fairly plump at the top and bottom of the age scale. I'd say what we've got now is that talent-age ratio is beginning to transition into a new cycle and the leadership is probably struggling to emerge in the new senior group (and we're having to rely on young KPP's).

Add to this some issues with gameplan transition (which this period of low expectation/achievement will be a godsend if handled right) and we've hit the crack end of struggle street. I really think we needed to let the pressure out of our tyres anyways, and if we can sure up some KPP's and start afresh mentally, then we'll be right in amongst it sooner rather than later.

It's interesting that our drafting got worse when we started picking way later in the draft.

Probably coincidence.

The Board were pretty decisive in removing Harvey to put RTB in. They should be the same with Bond and Lloyd. They have outstayed their Use by date. They are the main reason we are in this position - every draft for the last 5 years you can hear a collective groan from Freo supporters frustrated at opportunities lost. The chickens have come home to roost.

Don't blame them for dudding out on the draft picks we've had as a top 4 team. Blame them for not trading for lower picks and the chance to add quality development players. And not being willing to let some potential quality go, to get those picks.

The whole point of trading is to get something you need, and for that, you usually have to give up something other people want, and can see clear value in.

It absolutely mystifies me why people think you can't get a quality footballer unless you have pick 4 in the draft.

We got Hill as an early pick in 2007 and Morabito has played ten games. No one else.

Really, its offensively stupid. Barlow , Fyfe, Mundy, Walters , Ballantyne, Spurr....it goes on. None of them earlier than pick 16.

Do you really think our drafting was better in that period because of draft position??

I am okay with people being smart arses but you have to know what you are on about.

Extracted from Liam's perthnow article, "Ross Lyon led his charges to three losses out of the last four rounds ..."

The 3 of those 4 losses were to the Slime (24points), Norths (11points) and Port Adelaide (irrelevant B-team match).
Both the Slime and Norths made it to the preliminary finals and we sent our B-team to play Port.
In both the Slime and Norths games, once again, Freo statistically did very well, except for Free Kicks. The Slime game was 19-32 and Norths was 15-11 (Norths favour).
Freo won the four games prior to those 3 of 4 losses and Freo also won the QF against Sydney after those 3 of 4 losses.

If you are going to include such statements as evidence of Ross Lyon's failure ... then you don't have much evidence.

If one allows for some logic, how the heck can Freo end up minor premiers in 2015, then in 2016, 8 games in, be 0-8 and therefore recruiting (& virtually every aspect of the Fremantle Football club) must be blamed. As far as I'm aware, the major difference between the end of 2015 and the start of 2016 is Freo players are another 6 months older.

Rarely am I seeing any of the critical opinions even mentioning Fremantle's injuries.
I know Freo are a no excuses club, but surely injuries to 211, Fyfe, and others are at least one reasonable explanation rather than an excuse. I also know other clubs also have some injuries, but I'm not aware of any clubs that have any sort of injuries equivalent to Freo's currently sidelined A graders and which of those teams are still performing well?

I think many critics enjoy any opportunity to voice their opinion and they feel the 0-8 win loss justifies their critical analysis.
But ... 6 of Freo's 8 losses have so far been against top 8 teams. 5 of those 6 were also Away games.
(NB: As I recently posted, the Slime, since Round 1 2015, have won only 1 of their last 8 games away against top 8 teams).
The one home game that Freo lost vs a top8, was against GWS (with Freo missing 211, Fyfe, Johnno and playing many inexperienced youngsters). GWS smashed the Hawks only the week before and after watching some of that game, I backed GWS for premiers 2016.
So that leaves, in my mind, two bad losses to Gold Coast and Carlton. Freo had the major injuries against Carlton, statistically should have won the game. There was no injuries against Gold Coast, and again, on stats, Freo performed quite well, but in practice, got smashed due to costly opposition scoring from stoppages and turnovers. Roly admits the midfield defensive game was altered leading to many of those problems in that game.

So what I do know is, Freo are now 0-8 and still with major injuries to several A graders. That means 2016 is done.
My opinion is, I'm blaming injuries, a tougher start to the draw than first perceived and some early season new game plan tweaks to score more which actually made Freo's defence worse.
Most of the current critical opinions I'm reading are very much over the top and basing most of their arguments on the current 0-8 win loss record for 2016 (while comfortably ignoring what just happened in 2015).

Sure you can get some great players from lower picks, but it's just a lot harder to address specific needs, unless you get lucky. The other thing to remember about getting earlier draft picks, it's not just about the first round, but getting early dibs on second round choices and the others as they fold down into the later picks is pretty invaluable too. I reckon the second rounders are where some of the great choices come because of the narrowed selection and more creative choices as there's less pressure on making a mistake. But you don't want the selection too narrow.

So just wondering how teams like Sydney; Hawthorn and Geelong managed not to fall off a cliff too - surely you'd have to say it's about the quality of their negotiations, drafting and list management. For a no excuse club - I'm hearing on this page lots of excuses

Dockerknockers, you have really missed the entire point here.

The 0-8 start is a direct result of the deficiencies that have existed within the club for a long time and have been frequently pointed out for a number of seasons. Ignoring the facts doesn't make them go away.

We haven't recruited talls in time to replace our aging stars. The ones we eventually did recruit don't have the experience to carry the full load. Thats indisputable, although in the next few years that may chance (hopefully)

With few exceptions, we've put game time into players with limited skills. Thats been noted and commented on over a few years. I know because I've been saying that for years. So have others.

Comments about our decision making, missed handballs, failure to hit targets etc This is nothing new and is a direct result of failures on our part.

Now that we are forced by circumstances to move on from the systems that papered over those deficiencies, we are being exposed. The 0-8 start isn't down to lack of effort but simply a lack of ability.

We lack the skills needed to beat good sides (and bad sides since Carlton beat us at home). We lack good decision making under pressure (the system we used covered over that one nicely). We have a whole bunch of players who are great at playing roles but outside those roles they are deficient and now those roles looks like they are gone for all time due to the changes in rules.

Criticism of our recruiting and development is more than justified.

Harking back to 2015 is pointless and just plain wrong. The game this year is very different. If we had these rules last year, we would not have finished in top spot. Forget last year, thats just blinding you to the obvious.

We do not have enough of the right kind of players to be competitive this year when it counts and last year no longer counts. Yes, a lot of that must fall on Bond as he runs the football department and the recruiters are under his purview.

I don't get this blind support for Bond when the deficiencies are obvious. Why do people think that because his job is hard he shouldn't have to shoulder responsibility when he doesn't perform well. My job is hard as well but I'm held fully responsible for success or failure and i don't earn as much as Bond...or Lloyd.

They take the pay, they take the responsibility. Just because some of the criticism is over the top 9we can agree on that) doesn't make the basic criticism invalid. Its justifiable
