TOPIC: Liam Bartlett's Ramble

A couple of players doesn't make for balance. It's pretty evident they were concerned about the depth of reliable talent within a particular age bracket, by their raiding local leagues for mature talent. Young lists will have form in fits and spurts, but it rarely occurs over a sustained enough period, we see that with Port (you can even go back to the Baby Bombers, who were supposedly in for a dynasty after 1993, but took another 7 years to win another) and I'll reckon we'll see it with some of the young gun teams in the coming years too. You need enough depth in the mid tier, which we didn't really have and lots of leadership from the senior group, which we had then but are struggling with now.

Hypen, Ross Lyon is 8 games into a shite year after 4 very good years. I won't waste my time listing our injury list as I'm sure you know it already, but it doesn't seem there's any graces from you in that regard. Not to mention 4 years of hard graft and playing deep into the season year after year. If Mark Harvey had have taken us to a GF, a PF and a couple of semis he would have been fine. But he didn't.

The argument that he didn't want a head coaching job after the "treatment" from Freo is laughable. $600k+ to sit on your ass for a year must be a real tough gig. If anything, it just proves he doesn't have the ticker. That stuff goes on day in day out in every other industry in the world, but not necessarily with the payout.

As a matter of protocol, how many losses in a row would be an appropriate moment to start discussing the relative strengths and weaknesses of the various positions within the football club without it being 'hating'?

Docker76 I think everybody would be happy for RTB to prove everybody wrong, this would mean we will be winning games.
The fact remains that he is unproven in this role and the club has gone all in on the belief that he can.
I remain positive that he can because I think he is a good coach but am not 100% convinced. The proof will be in the pudding.

If you are a good coach it doesn't matter if you are in charge of a young developing team or an experienced team.

The fundamental ability of getting them to perform to the best of their ability and play how you want them to play remains the same regardless of the squad you have.

I've been banging on all the time. wining ugly or not, I put my head up for the last 4 years. I'm not happy. The Steves wiped their arse on the fabric of this club, and patted themselves on the back.

The main question I have to ask is why the hell did RL get a 5 year contract? A complete endorsement of the man and his method. No question marks at ALL over his performance? Not from where I was looking. Not even by his own standards. He's not a premiership coach. Straight sets in 2014, limping to the line in 2015. When did any coach last get a five year contract? It doesn't happen often. Was it Wallace at Richmond? How did that end? Or was the relationship so dependent upon the vindication of the original decision to knife Harvey.

I would put it to the board that they perhaps have been neglectful in their duties to the club and us. Why not 3? Why not 2 and an option? Keep him hungry. He was hungry when he came, we saved his financial bacon in 2011. The alternative at St Kilda was about to devalue his worth as a coach, he had completely ran them into the ground. St Kilda are now closer to a premiership than us. Sadly. And Brad Johnston looks like the footballing genius to end all discussions.

Lyon has stepped up on the bridge in 2016, all relaxed after a dinner party with first class for preseason, found an iceberg dead ahead, and to mix my metaphors, we then fell off a cliff that he didn't see. Who honestly thought after 2 months of the season we would be talking rebuild at 0-8, and potentially tanking for draft picks. With no recourse or call to account for the head coach or the executive for their involvement in said disaster?

Apart from Blocker....Who honestly after two months in the season thought we'd be without 211, Fyfe, Bennell, Yarran and Johnson.

....and the departure of Kirk seems to not have been helpful. Damn you Ross....you've a lot to answer for, but thanks for the good times in the last three years.

Yarran, ok. Seriously? How were we going with those guys? Excepting Bennell. He was a risk, all class on the field, but a risk. We all know injuries hurt. But our injury list isn't as long as others. Our down on confidence list probably is.

We're missing the best or 2nd best ruckman in the comp, and we're missing the best player in the comp.

0-8 sucks, but there's no point doing a Richmond and finishing 9-12. I don't want the spoon, which I think we'll avoid, but we need the picks. Does nobody else enjoy seeing the young kids getting a kick and looking to the future? I reckon a lot of you are a bit spoiled.

Don't get me wrong I'd prefer we were contenders every year, but it just isn't possible.

All this talk of tanking has confused people as to how bad 0-8 actually is.

Any appearance of control is just a facade.

28000 at the last home game, where do you think we're heading? So if we're going to tank for draft picks, how do you think we'll go on draft night? Do you really think we'll nab another Pav ready to pull us out of an 0/22 season in 2017?

I actually think an utter burnt out to this stage of the season aint so bad. I always thought this year would be a good time to shift the focus anyways (although the scale of it is a bit of a script twist). It really serves to take the type of pressure they've had for the past number of seasons right off the playing group for a good period. Better that than be say 3-5 and going for broke at a minor spot stage left in the finals. Hopefully they come home with a wet sail and in what really is now a gap year, so they can take some momentum into next year.

Gap years are for uni students that want to spend the year getting pissed and horizontal in Europe.
