TOPIC: Liam Bartlett's Ramble

We had incredible talent, the best young list in 2010. I'm sick of people perpetuating the myth we didn't have a quality list simply because RL said so. Our list was full of stars and kids who could be anything and were already borderline guns.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm not going to contradict what you say Bizkit, because I always think, hope we will win every week of every year.

Full 2010 List below, including Rookies. Those with asterisks (19) were retired, traded or delisted by the end of 2011. (I've included C.Pearce amongst those with an asterisk as he was delisted even though he's in the current group ).

The first group of 17 from 2010 are still at the club.

Mundy, Pavlich, Hill, Barlow, Clarke, Sandilands, Johnson, Fyfe, Ibbotson, Ballantyne, De Boer, Suban, Mayne, Silvagni, Walters, Morabito, C Pearce*

The 2nd group of 28 from 2010 are gone. Those in Bold were retired, delisted, traded since 2012.

Palmer*, Roberton, Crichton, Ruffles*, Hinkley*, Bollenhagen*, Van Berlo, Broughton, Thornton*, Dodd*, Schammer*, Grover, Hayden*, Hasleby*, Murphy* McPhee, McPharlin, Crowley, Bradley, Tarrant*, Headland*, Duffield, Shepheard*, Bucovaz*, Houghton*, Sibosado*, Hall*, O'Brien*

The additional listed players for 2011, prior to the Trade period/National Draft at the end of the 2011 season were: Faulks, Griffin, Mzungu, Pitt, Michie, Mellington, Anthony, Roberts, Lower

If you can't look at the 2011 squad and not realise how perfectly positioned that was to challenge for a premiership, then you are not objective. Roly was happy to talk it down with his "I haven't inherited Nirvana" comment, because he knew it was a rod for his own back. It was the best deal going around, and as I have banged on for goddamn over 4 years, 2012 is the opportunity lost, before the Hawks gained their ascendancy- with that squad. Squandered, I tell you.. 2013 was right in the window, and the last two years were a waste of careers.

Roly has got out of this lightly all along, and frankly I'm sick of both our process weasel words (cheers Polly), and 'supporters' this year supporting a tank for draft picks. Go have a good look at the ladder, look at where that rabble of a club that Essendon is, and look at where we are, and tell me that's a good thing, and you like it. If I just landed from Mars and looked at the ladder, why can't I invoke the time-honoured insult of "he's lost the players?" OK, a lot of what I'm saying is devils advocate, but the fact is everyone has their eye off the ball at the moment, management included, and even supporters. Ross is complacent with his buddy-buddy contract from the Steve's and related puppetry, when the reality is they should be hung drawn and quartered for offering 5 years there and then. This year speaks for itself, and the back half of last year was symptomatic.

Fremantle. Either asleep at the wheel, or phoning it in.

We had a talented list in 2010/2011 but a very imbalanced one, particularly in terms of the age spread. I tend to think that lucking out with Barlow in 2010 had as much to do with us rocketing up the ladder, as we finally had a big bodied mid that could take full advantage of Sandi's dominance in the ruck. Case in point we sunk pretty rapidly after he was injured. Whatever you think are Lyon's failings, it's pretty unrealistic to think that any old coach could of got the boys to being top 4 regulars including our travelling record improving significantly.

If you think our list was the best young list out there, please, no complaints about the recruiting. The "not nirvana" comment came from someone who was an outsider at the time and who had a pretty dominant record against Freo, so he learnt more about their capabilities, but also back away for PR reasons too.

Roly regularly took the points against us because he had one one of the best sides going around, and we were still hitting our straps. I'm happy enough with recruiting until 2012, after that the drafting is open to more criticism than it should, it is still a pretty inexact science. The main issue is the topping up that has either been a bust or non-event, in what was our premiership window. I didn't see many top flighters clamouring to come and play under Ross. Particularly from St Kilda.

It was really well balanced actually. A lot of star kids improving and putting a stamp on the competition like Fyfe, Hill and Son Son, some mid aged players in their prime like Manic and Barlow as well as the older superstars with another few good years left like Pav and Elvis.

Harvs looked to be a coach easily capable of getting us to top 4 until injuries struck us down in 2011. Made and won a final in 2010, were in the top 8 most of 2011 anyway and with everyone coming back from injury the expectation was definitely top 4 in 2012 if not top 2.

To think RL didn't rate our list was more a reflection of his lack of attention to us and our injuries than anything else. A 'dominant record against Freo' was due in part to our struggles in the years before RL as we rebuilt and the Saints dominance over the whole competition RL never managed to capitalise on.

Yeah don't forget you doubters, about the highlights package put up here a week ago from 2010 when we had the "best up and coming list" going around. There was slow motion, flowing hair and even a bit of music. We were so close, so close.

Sure, we had rarely won in Melbourne, definitely not in Geelong. Won all of about 2 finals, both in Perth. When we travelled, unless you were drunk and/or overly optimistic you rarely believed we could actually win away. We couldn't tackle, shepherd, defend. But hey, the future was huge, as long as Harvey was going to be there. Curious that he has never found a head coaching job since, not even at the basket case club of which his a favourite among favourite sons.

Pretty sure he wasn't interested in a head coaching job after the treatment he received from our Admin.

Would you be?

The combined efforts of the 2011 Fremantle Dockers football club was an 11th placed finish. That got Harvey sacked. Whether the admin blamed Harvey for that finish, or just thought they'd nabbed a better coach, is unclear. I'm pretty sure the steves wouldn't have had the guts to sack Harvey if they had finished top 4 in 2011.

The combined efforts of the 2016 Fremantle Dockers football club is an 0-8 record. You could mount an argument that on that basis, Roly should be sacked.

I think it's an asinine argument, but it has a certain logic to it.

What doesn't have any logic to it is that we should only judge Harvey on 2010, but that we should only judge Roly on 2016, and that he doesn't get any credit for four consecutive finals series, three top 4s, and a Grand Final.

Roly never built the team, he was just handed it and as head coach his team won more. That's an objective fact. Maybe Harvey could have taken it to greater heights than a 2013 Grand Final appearance. We'll never know. I reckon there was a fair bit of Port Adelaide / Ken Hinkley in that 2010 Freo side - but that's just wild speculation.

We've got Lyon now, and someone needs to decide whether he's the man for a rebuild. Seems unlikely to me, but I'm not sure you can sack him before he's had a crack at it.

Chewy that list you put together of players at the club when Lyon arrived makes up a big chunk of the 2013 grand final team.
Don't think it can be argued that Lyon didn't get a good list.
I remember in my fury after Harvey was sacked calling 6pr in response to the question, What would be a pass mark for Lyon's first year?
My response was top 4, I was that confident in our list and also aware of a horror injury list in Harvey's last year.
Recently I have witnessed our results, in being top 4, playing off in a grand final a gauranteed performance week to week.
I then read Pavs book and was reassured that the club had made the right choice.
I now look at situation I am nowhere near as confident in our progression. I Am worried but will continue to keep the faith, the evidence won't be conclusive until next year.

At what point will Lyon be under pressure to keep his job? We could go through this year winless and they won't touch him I reckon. I have never seen this in football before in all my four decades of watching it. An untouchable coach.

It's called footy amnesia hypen. Any coach who has just inked a long term deal is pretty much, short of something like taking a dump on the CEO's desk, "untouchable".
