demo1, that's pretty sad when those four traded from GWS to Carlton can't play footy pretty well, but they were good enough to all be playing in the Carlton side that beat Freo at Subi in Round 5.

demo1, their new clubs disagree with you.

Treloar and Bugg have played all 7 games, Lamb and Phillips 6 apiece, Plowman and Sumner 4 each, Townsend 3. Hampton has a foot injury which has sidelined him so far.

Bloody Harvey and his long time mate Sheeds. From memory Sheed's was quoted to say that he will ensure that Freo will be starved of talent in the draft, after the Harvey/Lyon turmoil. Sheeds and GWS ensured this. Any WA talent especially KPP was hijacked by them before Bond had a say. However, these kids don't like being cut from their mummy's apron strings. They'll be back. Let's hope, with Roly at the helm, they'd want to come back sooner rather then later ( 2020 vision).

bpurple, are you kidding?

The next 5 weeks are a test for GWS. They'll destroy Gold Coast, then face WB's, Adelaide (away), Geelong (away) and Sydney.

During the first 12 rounds they will have played: Hawthorn, Sydney (twice), Geelong (twice), WB's, Adelaide and last year's minor premiers (away).

They'll have a winning record at that stage.

Then they play: Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Brisbane, Port, Richmond and Gold Coast.

They'll be top 4 at that stage.

They finish with: Slime (home), Freo (home) and North (away).

They'll win at least two of those games, finish with 16-17 wins and top 4.

Don't think they can go all the way this year (depending on their results over the next 5 weeks) but watch out...only bad luck will keep them out of next year's GF...and probably 3-4 of the next five after that.

They'll be that good.

The apocalypse is at the door...and fumbling with the keys.

In case you missed it, here's what happened when they played Hawthorn a couple of weeks ago...

I concur, Fre-doh. It's $100M investment by the AFL, that's about to realise it's ROI. This tree was planted to bear fruit over a generation. A wiseman said to me that they'll win a premiership or two before Freo even get to challenge. I laughed with gusto. I'm just relieved that I didn't take his $1k bet at the time.

On my reading of things, Jezza, you did yourself out of a grand, because we already challenged in 2013.

Yep Fre_Doh, I backed GWS in for premiers a couple of weeks back.
(Full disclaimer, I also backed Freo to make the 8 before their Carlton game).

GWS are only going to get better as the season gets older.
Even if they get a couple of injuries, they have that much depth, in all areas, they can cover it.
Their midfield, with Mumford are arguably the best in the competition.

You're backing a team with no finals experience to win 3 finals? Good luck with that.

Even if GWS win their first two finals at home, they'll be like Freo or Slime on GF day against MCG flat track bullies Hawthorn.

Davo, I did say they probably won't win it this year.

Ironically since the beginning of the 2014 season, Hawthorn has a losing record against only two teams - Port and GWS.

GWS's total record v Hawthorn reads like this:
Rd 15, 2012: Lost by 162 points.
Rd 8, 2013: Lost by 83 points.
Rd 11, 2014: Lost by 7 points (MCG).
Rd 6, 2015: Won by 10 points.
Rd 6, 2016: Won by 75 points.

Both in NSW in front of 20,000 people but that is not where the Grand Final is played, and add on 80,000.

Of which 70000 will be corporates.

Of which 95% will be cheering for GWS.

If Mumford gets taken out by some sniper with big knees, GWS will not be so dominant, they don't have the experience to cover for the mongrel element he gives. Finals footy needs that bit of hardness to succeed.

Maybe not as hard, but The Lobbster is bigger than Mummy and could easily ruck.

McCarthy trade was more in the Tom Boyd type deal the way it played out in the media - contracted/first rounder/key forward - and with the AFL's investment into making GWS a success - my feelings always been that there would have been some external pressure on the club to not give an impression that players picked up by GWS in the draft don't have to see out their contract. That, plus GWS, having parted with Boyd, would have some uncertainty about Patton as a key forward- given he had already had two knee reconstructions.

Treloar, Bugg and Townsend were all out of contract at the end of 2015. Only Treloar and Bugg were regular players. Hampton, Lamb, Plowman, Sumner, and Phillips were contracted to the end of 2016.

Cam McCarthy played 20 games for GWS in the 2015 season, more than Townsend, Sumner, Plowman and Phillips had played in their 3, mostly 4 years at GWS. Top ten draft picks Plowman (0 games in 2015) and Sumner (2 games in 2015) had spent large chunks of their time on the injury list. Phillips (4 games in 2015) was a rookie draft pick. The other two players Lamb (2 games in 2015) and Hampton (5 games in 2015): Lamb played 12 of his 22 career games at the Sydney Swans prior to being traded to GWS - and Hampton who had played 51 games - but only 16 games in the previous two seasons was finding opportunities as a rebounding defender limited with the arrival of Shaw from Collingwood in 2014 and Patfull from Brisbane in 2015.

Seeing as Bondy and GWS's Campbell were teammates at Richmond, you would hope they would at least be able to engage in a conversation with each other about McCarthy this time around.
