TOPIC: Coach Lyon

A number of Dockers supporters have been anti-Ross since the start as they were unhappy with the way (bloody) Harvey was sacked. They have been quietly simmering away as there wasn't much that could be said as we were relatively successful.
Now that we have slipped they are getting their chance. I guess we have to reward them for their patience by allowing them to vent, but in the long run, Ross will stay as he's one of the best in the business.

No, a lot of people have been anti Lyon because his football has been dull to watch, and wastes talented players.

I just like saying those awkward things people don't want to hear when they've given up logic, thought and individuality for some product.

I love Dockerland.

( by the way Captain, when I am on the phone the formatting's screwy, the quick links at the bottom of the page for return to index etc don't appear)

Purple Cove, you can be forgiven for quoting Karl Langdon only if in so doing you mock him mercilessly.

Drubbing is bang on. I honestly preferred watching Demons/Saints on the weekend, great game. But more to the point Lyon has been caught asleep at the wheel, the AFL rule changes with deliberate out of bounds, rotations and the limiting of men around the kicker from a mark or free have demanded corridor footy and less stoppages, negating our terribly depressing and demanding game plan. Couple that with our travel, and we deserve to be where we are at. Heaven help us if GWS wind up their running game on the weekend, then we will see where we are not at.

Mate of mine said St Kilda are closer to a premiership 3 weeks ago. And he was right. Very very right.

And this talk of Ross being the man for the rebuild is desperation stakes from management, ass-covering for the ridiculous extension to Lyon's contract. There was no need to sign him, and better talent for a rebuild. Truth is freo management didn't know where this squad was relative to the rest of the competition, and today's game.

Some of the most thrilling football Freo has played has been under Roly. There were plenty of boring grind-them-out wins, but I think people tend to romanticise previous eras because we only remember the good games. Roly doesn't strike me as a master-motivator, and yet for the life of me I can't think of a game in his era where the Freo players haven't given their all. There's something to that.

Part of the reason I consider the admin needs to commence a succession plan is that their legacy is now tied too closely to Roly's. They brought him here, and they have re-signed him. I'm not prepared to say re-signing was a bad move - Roly might surprise us all and turn out to be the perfect man for a rebuild - but those entrusted with that decision will struggle to be objective about it. Effectively, sacking Roly at some point would be an admission of their own failings. The steves have proven themselves to be many things, but humble isn't one of them.

Well put Blocker. Quotes from article on Ross Lyon from 12 weeks ago:
"Ross Lyon has barely taken a single training drill during this pre-season."
"It's been great. Have a look at me. I'm pretty relaxed."
Lyon suggested that "the tweaks we'll make with the ball will make us better defensively and it should help our offence".
Can the Dockers still contend? "That's the aim," said the coach. "I don't see us falling off a cliff."

Whatever his merits as a coach ... he has certainly set a record for hubris.

I was going to weave the word complacent into the post, Ralph, but you have done a far better hatchet job.

If you don't remember more exciting football Morgan then I would direct you to the dockerland youtube channel where Shane was posting a new video every week of the exhilarating and breathtaking football we were playing throughout 2010. Nothing that has come under RL compares in any way really. The closest were the Geelong and Sydney finals ahead of the GF but even then it was a qtr or the occasional 5min of brilliance and then scrapping and fighting which isn't great to watch.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Our history are littered with failures and mocked as a basket case club for most of its existence. It's been 5 years since Harvey's demised and in that time, we've played in 4 consecutive finals and came close once. The man who did that still have many doubters and will continue to do so. The opposition fans loves nothing more then to bag Freo, win, lose or draw, none more so then those fans of the wombats down the road. So we don't really need our own to follow suit. One thing about sporting teams is that, there is a fairytale story to be told, just ask Leicester City.

You can find exciting highlights from any era, that's my point Bizkit. The 2010 win against Geelong was one of the most thrilling games I've seen us play, but I'm assuming Shane didn't post highlights from our non-competitive effort against North that year or the pantsing by the Bulldogs.

On the back of injuries we lost our last 7 games in 2011 (they weren't much fun), but halfway through the season we were only .500 team. In fact, for the whole 2011 season we only reached the 100 point figure three times (once against the fledgling Suns). It's a crude stat, but I'm not sure this utopia of football we remember from 2010 would necessarily have carried on. As we know, other coaches figure out a team's strategy pretty quickly. For all the talk of Roly's 'Plan B', are we sure Harvey had one? We'll never know.

I'm not saying that Roly's style of play is more aesthetically pleasing, but when someone asks me to list my favourite ever Freo games, the prelim against Sydney and the Qualifying Final at Kardinia Park are one and two. That counts for something.

This is was basically achieved with Harvey's team plus the addition of Zac Dawson. 2012 was the year Hawthorn weren't ready. We'll never know what sort of record we would have had with Harvey, and whether he would have improved as a coach and communicator during that time. But I'm calling it for about the same, sure, possibly less consistent than a Lyon coached team, but far more Fremantle. And far more in keeping with where football is going.
