Hawkes may be the bench mark, but that's now in a state of flux and I would say that they wont be that bench mark come season's end. There is a shift in motion, I think we can all see that. The 1st round draftees are starting to pay off hence the imminent domination of sides like GC and GWS.
The draft system will have precedence for remodelling after the next few years due to the imbalance of teams that missed out (ie, anyone except for GWS and GC). It stands to reason that if the common thought is it takes 5 odd years to "rebuild" a team to be a contender for a premiership (sometimes much longer) this is why we are seeing these teams with the good drafts rising to the top. Started in 2010 didn't they?
I really like the concept of playing our younger players more so than not and to use the older heads to guide these lads. They only got moved off the ball easily because they are young and need the experience (plus muscle development that comes with practical game experience). It's rare to see players at such a young age not get moved off the ball.
I agree with some of the previous posters, the younger players looked good, had hunger and lifted the overall morale. I think that's why we didn't get totally demolished by a good side on the weekend. We had that youthful desperation and intent.

Sam Collins to come and keep the rest of the young guns.... come the end of the year I'm betting ( three genuine marbles - yes real ones ) that the cull of culls will happen with the smoting stick to fall upon a heap of underperforming yobbos such as Suban, Maine, Z Clark,MZ, De boor, Ballantyne, Clancy P, et all. We need a framework of seniors such as Hill, Walters, Fyfe, Mundy, Neale et all and cull the rest! You know it makes sense!

It's ok to start playing kids but Roly said, it's a delicate balance. Our goal kicking hasn't improve either after Sat. Look, we're a few down on personnel. It's the big 4. Sandi, Fyfe, Johnno and Bennell. Trouble is if they're in, Tucker, Grey, Crozier and Weller are out. Big difference in experience. For those who are wanting mass changes, it ain't going to happen. As it is, I hope the above 4 young blokes hold they're spot for at least 4 weeks. Continuity is the key. I'd be surprise if after the bye, the worm isn't trending upwards.

I guess it's who the kids replace which is the sticking point - of course the Fyfes and Johnsons should/will return but the Dawson's and The Subans need to go for good. Look at the Hawks and Wet Toast - both blooding the new boys with a solid bunch of seniors.

Snail, when you say to look at the Hawks, one thing you might see is that they have some older experienced players in the VFL, ready to step up if needed. That gives them depth, which is a nice thing to have when injury strikes. I'm not sure its a good idea that everyone not getting a regular gig with the big boys is a skinny kid.

There's a good body of thought out there that thinks dropping Ibbo cost us the Carlton game - now they're 2 games better than us. This isn't about exclaiming faith in a faulty messiah - everyone knew what changes were coming in, every team had an entire preseason to prepare for it. If it catches you off-gaurd, you can't read the game well enough to be effective. Proven point with us, no question.

The selection of younger players should be made to get a result. Development is fine, but 4pts should be the aim every week. It may be good having Tucker experience some big league game time, but there's only so long that you can carry someone with 13d, 1 tackle and a grand total of 1 behind when Suban gets 20d, lays 8 tackles and kicks 3 goals for Peel. Heart-warming for his family, a good criticism dodge for the coaches, but in the end you gotta wonder who is doing the maths. What we need is a win, not a NAB preseason tryout - make your new mantra '4 points is the point' on a weekly basis.

Polly, from here on in this season, its not particularly about getting the 4 points. I'm sure Roly won't complain if we win some, but his focus will be on rebuilding. As others have said, this is a new thing for him, but I reckon he's up for the challenge.

I think it's great that the senior guy's tore it up in the WAFL on the weekend. But so they should and when they have maintained that level for two or three more games then they have earned a recall. But playing those senior guy's so we finish 9 or 10 on the ladder means we don't get games into the young blokes. And when those seniors are delisted, retire or whatever next year we will be in a worse position, with the coach being accused by all and sundry of not being able to rebuild a list and refusing to play the kids. Polly last year you championed the ability of Mr Yarran (which in my opinion was an excellent bit of recruiting ) who we now have on our list, but the only way he is going to get a chance is if someone like Mayne or Ballas is dropped. We can't waste this season.

Big Ross fan so not hear to slip the boots in. It has always been reported that Ross wanted to adopt a Hawks style game plan. It would seem he recruited his assistants to help enable us to do so. It would seem that the game has changed. Even the Hawks could be down with us if not for sheer will to win in numerous games. Forgive me for quoting Carl Langdon but he said there in no use copying a teams successful game plan you need to be developing a better one yourself.
