TOPIC: Coach Lyon

Eventually Coach Lyon 7 years 11 months ago #1

Eventually
There have been some very shallow and misinformed scutterbut around these last 6 weeks but I for one think we have a master coach who is and will now show us all just why he is so highly regarded. Reading his Q & A from yesterday I can only admire his composure, his vision and his respect for our players.
He almost got us the trophy twice in the last 3 years but that is gone he will now rebuild and within 2 years you get the feeling we will be there again and what a ride it will be, I'm licking my lips in anticipation!

He's the best coach ever to take a team to 0-6.

I'm a RTB fan, I will give him this first half of the season off, but I will want a big finish to this year and for this to be carried into next year. Otherwise I will be jumping off the RTB wagon

He is an important cog in the wheel and it helps a lot if he does a good job but there are many others that also need to perform. For example the General Manager Football Operations needs to deliver our coaching staff with the players they need.

I'm a big Roly fan because of who we had before him. It was the blind leading the blind for many years.
I'll give Harvs his due in that he did develop younger players and he taught them how to tackle.
But If there is one thing I'd change it would be for Roly to lose the "turn the other cheek" attitude to insipid umpiring performances. We got caned last year after r9 and especially we were raped by the umpiring establishment in the prelim final. I was at the 2013 Gf in good position to see the Squawks playing and staging for frees and being paid them. Brad Scott has come out agin' them a few times and has not suffered any long term imposition.
Call a spade a spade, THATS PRETTY SIMPLE REALLY

Nope - when you're 0/6 a year after being 6/0 you've got to put your hand up and accept you haven't delivered. Facts are facts, trends aren't your friends when this is happening - quite the opposite. Retaining faith when you're standing in the rubble of the temple is admirable, but ultimately foolish. What I heard at the presser was more like:

'Yeah, the temple has collapsed, but every time I wake up I recognise the opportunity it brings'.

I disagree. I believe he AFL have made it their mission to kill off the 'defensive-based' coaching/styles of play preferred by such coaches as Malthouse, Roos & Lyon through rules changes (10m protected zones), reduced rotations and umpiring biases towards 'attacking' teams like Hawthorn.

Unfortunately for Ross, he hasn't had the chance to make wholesale changes to our list as quickly as the rule changes have come in. Blokes whose only real attributes were to apply pressure but who lack pace and skill fill our list.

How Ross is able to turn our fortunes around from mid-season with the same cattle makes no sense. Hopefully we'll get a few players back by then - but I'd rather see us with some high draft picks than rush Fyfe or AA Johnno back for no real good reason.

Of course, the coach is also not the one missing 10 out of 12 shots on goal - shots from blokes that have never previously had such problems (Pav), but the rose-coloured glasses brigade who have never gotten over the demise of Harvey, are now revelling in our rapid fall from grace. Apparently plenty of these are on Dockerland.

Here's a idea, how about coming up with an alternative coaching guru we should seek to replace RTB - and not in a historical context (I.e. Harvey would have done better).

Who is the assistant coach in charge of goal kicking? Has there been a change in the approach to goals? It seems such a problem this year.

it's not Sumich anymore. Is true that Simon Eastaugh is our midfield ass?

The Mayne conundrum must keep the whole coaching panel awake at night. You get the feeling he is so close to being a great footballer. But year after year he kills us by not kicking goals and is essentially getting a game week after week for his tackling ability. Now we face the prospect of losing him to free agency where he will probably become a good player for another club and get his goal kicking ability back. Do we keep playing him and try to increase his value. Re sign him? I hope he doesn't try to shop himself around for more money because if anyone owes the club it is Mayne.

Mark Stone is forward coach - he was the stoppage coach. He doesn't seem to be the man for the job. Eastaugh is one of two midfield coaches

I think Jason has nailed it.
I trust Ross to develop his skill set, I'd say he was told to delegate some responsibility to others and started with the centre square. That went well!
As alternative, how about David King or Dermy

Out of interest what is the difference between the using the term 'skill set' and just saying 'skills'?

David King yes, if Dermots brains were dynamite he would not be able to clear his ears. He has a degree in hindsight and stating the bleeding obvious, so thats a no for me.
But the whole point is mute because we have an excellent coach already.
