I don't know I'd be blaming Bond for missing Hooker

Essendon is throwing money at those blokes and I'm betting that there are 'side deals' going on as compensation for being suspended. I don't know that we were ever in the hunt for him. Essendon needs all of those guys to re-sign, if for no other reason that having some control over potential lawsuits.

It does bring us back to a glaringly obvious factor though. Getting KPPs via trading is next best thing to impossible, especially when you are not a destination club and Freo is not a destination club ala Hawthorn. The list management model of drafting midfielders and trying to trade for KPPs is just not viable and needs to be abandoned.

In the meantime, good luck to Essendon for throwing a 5 year deal at a 28 year old

Yep Yeti, if Hawthorn was in the mix and he still chose to stay at Essendon, then it was probably always just about raising his market value. I'm glad we missed him for the sort of coin people were talking about.

I have a fear that we may have struggled to pay the likes of Fyfe and Neale what they are deserved in the coming seasons and still have something in the bank for any possible Hogan deal (even if I don't believe the Hogan deal will happen).
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

This destination club stuff is nonsense. There is nothing remarkable about Hawthorn. They execute the skills of the game well, both on and off the ground.

There are very a small number key position players in the league. A fraction of those are available to be poached. You can't afford to bugger about with the contract in the backline, waiting for the perfect lead.

There may also be some form of the "Stockholm Syndrome" for a lot of the Essendon players, having gone through this far together...they've obviously been Bonded.

You win a premiership and you instantly become more attractive as a destination, just with the glow alone. When the Hawks won their first, seemingly ahead of the usual schedule in 2008, it was viewed that they had a dynasty on their hands. That, along with being in the heart of the AFL universe, makes you a destination club.

Give a player good coin and longevity and do it in a decisive manner and they are destined to join your club.

Well done Essendon, they recognized their situation and offered overs to get him.

Essendon must have the magic money tree growing somewhere, it confuses me on how they are paying for all this. Makes me think they are going to field a team in the upcoming election the way they are going.

Hurley is supposedly staying as well.

There is something that just doesn't seem right about getting McCarthy. He didn't exactly set the world alight at GWS and this homesickness issue seems a bit odd given he signed a deal to stay over there. But what choice do we have now? I'd say GWS will play hard ball again we are ones more desperate for him they are stocked up with key forwards.

Who is looking for the Mick Barlow, Nick Kommer types out there in the form of KPP? There are blokes playing Tier 2 who can play Tier1?

As an example, that American kid for the Pies seemed to be able to mark and kick straight and up to a few years ago had never heard of the AFL let alone played a game, and if Darcy Cameron for Claremont (who is a kid from Albany couldn't play AFL I'd be surprised.

You just need a recruiter who can spot them........oh.

Who's to say we didn't offer him good coin and longevity. Here's a crazy thought - perhaps he wants to be a one club player.

If we really wanted Hooker at Freo maybe we should have not only thrown a fist full of dollars at him; for a few dollars more we may have clinched the deal.
