First, I'm not saying those clubs have done well only because of their advantages, I'm just acknowledging they have advantages Freo don't have. When Geelong assembled it's premiership team, getting Abblett, Hawkins and Scarlett through F/S was a huge advantage. When Abblett left for GC17, they got two first round picks (Caddy and Smelt) helped with the rebuild. As did getting Dangerfield as a free agent. Sydney has used its academy well, which means they get top 3-value picks at pick 16 in consecutive years. They used the COLA well to get Buddy. The three Footscray players you mentioned are quite handy for them.

Think of all time and money invested in 'finding that 1%', how many percent does a Gazza or Buddy being gifted to you represent? Bondy's not playing on a level playing field.

Now, we could have tried to trade up in the draft the last five years, but that meant giving up something of value, and frankly, the expansion teams had all the picks, and had no intention of getting veterans. So we went after free agents, but it hasn't been a friendly market for Freo. That's not to say we haven't kicked the tires. If Bond was outplayed by his contemporaries, we have no way of knowing how much of that is on Bond.

My guess is Bond is just very conservative, but how would any of us know? Certainly attempts at incremental improvement aren't very exciting, but they are a damn sight better than a what we've had in the past. Pav speaks highly of him, and Roly and the Steves are pretty mercenary. If they thought he was making them look bad, he'd be gone in minutes. And yet he's still there.

Also, if not Bond, then who?

Thats a scary thought, Darth!

Fact is Bond is the Football Manager. He makes the decisions and the buck stops with him. If his support team isn't up to snuff why hasn't he done something to fix it?

Bond makes the critical decisions. Its his job for crying out loud. Yes, its a hard job and yes its a critical job.....and No he doesn't do it well enough and the club has limitations as a result.

The presence of an academy or the club being Victorian wouldn't make up for those flaws. Brisbane has an academy and they're crap. Melbourne is a tradtional Vic club and they're crap.

Unfortunately, both of those sides aren't quite as crap as we are.

Bond is not the only issue but nobody can argue that he isn't a weakness that we can no longer afford to maintain.

The coaches need to explain why the skills issues hasn't be addressed sufficiently to see a difference. Its not a new issue. People having been raising it for years and for of Roly's clever pressers, he is not selecting on skills but on grunt. It was a bad call before and its a bad call now.

Those who can or might should get games. Those who have shown they cannot should be discarded and replaced.

Also those who are taking the cheap shot about fans only being here for the wins, I've been here from day 1. I'll die a Docker. I just hope I won't die without seeing a flag or two.

Its not the losing that hurts, its the fact we have some real stars and we are still losing pathetically. Yesterday we lost, badly, to a rubbish side. We lost to a side that got 9 frees in their forward 50 in a single quarter and kicked 2 goals from those frees. Thats worse than Carlton, yet we got smashed. Theres some perspective for you and its painful

Explain to me how Hawthorn, a club that has barely been out of the top 4-8 for 10 years, has still got fast, skilled players well able to win premierships. They're not getting them from high draft picks that's for sure.

We can't all be the preferred destination, but year after year after year Freo goes to the trade table and does nothing, and refuses to put anything of value up for offer. Sometimes they don't even attempt to do anything, and treat the whole week as an excuse to smash the expenses account.

My take on the recruiter job is that the longer you’re in the job at one club, the better the feel you have for the list, the more intuitive you can be with getting the best fit picks. It’s also a position that benefits greatly from a lot of experience (as long as it’s the right kind of experience and not just the cling on until long service leave kind).

With our current guys (Lloyd et al and not so much Bond – he get’s to wear the can for the trade issues and for setting the tone) they began with a few dud drafts when they were really green, but seem to have started to come good over the past few (even if we’re just going by Yeti’s level of fancy for the new guys).

I can only imagine how good Phil Smart would’ve gone with another 6 or 7 years, had Harvey done more to retain him and not bring in his Essendon mates. Bloody Harvey.

At least Harvey brought in some much needed grunt and experience. Solly, Smokey were good value. Johnson didn't work out. Hipless could have given more if not hipless.

since then we've brought in a mediocre Pearce, Griffin, Dawson, Anthony and Sylvia the superdud.

Griffin and Anthony would both be in the first list, arriving when the previous coach was still at the helm, although how much a coach gets involved in trading/drafting is a moot point.

The current issue is skills. 17 Fremantle players had a disposal efficiency of under 70% whereas last night the opposition (who were poor, but not equally poor) had 7 under 70%.

"We have never been to these levels before of turnover." (Post match press conference)

Going into the Derby they would have planned and trained a game plan with Mundy in the midfield, and with Sandilands playing more than 26% game time.

Players want to go to Hawthorn, and they've recruited really well, not just for need, but for genuine quality.

Gibson, Burgoyne, Frawley, McEvoy and Gunston, nearly a quarter of their team today, basically walked through their front door. With the possible exception of McEvoy, those players would be walk-up starts for Freo. Would our ball movement be better with Burgoyne's silky skills? Could we bench Dawson if we had Gibson and Frawley down back? Could we kick more goals with Gunston in the team instead of Mayne?

We got D Pearce, Gumbleton and Sylvia, and this year Bennell.

Bond got no credit for getting Bennell because he wanted to come home to us - fair enough - yet the Hawks get heaps of credit for their 'recruiting' when players basically beg to play for them, and take pay cuts to do so. I bet Bond's counterpart at the Hawks reckons he's ace at his job, but even Bond could sell Hawthorn.

Most players in the league don't want to move to Perth to play football. The best placed Melbourne are favoured by free agency. Pretending that isn't the case to further an argument against Bond isn't facing up to the reality of Freo's place in the football world. I find it odd that people can see how little respect we get from the rest of the league when it comes to the AFL admin, the umpires, the commentators etc, but assume the players rate the club and want to play here. We're a mid-tier club 4 hours away from the rest of the football world, that's never won a premiership. As a player agent, why would you pitch that to your free agent client?

It works the other way too Morgan. There will always be players from WA wanting to return home at some point. This is how I am hoping we will get Hogan, McCarthy etc. I also think selling the club should be Bond's brief- it is essentially his job and, to me anyway, there is alot that sells Freo. Traditional footy state, big crowds, parochial fans, the weather, women, being a big fish in a small town etc.

I believe the big turn off for alot of players is the awful brand of footy we play. It was telling that neither Dixon or Ryder wanted to come here. I would have thought we had just as much to offer as Port does.

Although as far as Ryder goes Port had just beaten us in a final, had a crapload less ruckmen and a younger list.
